My Dear Friends in Christ,
If we listen closely to the Opening Prayer that we will
pray together this weekend, we could think that it was
written specifically for the summer months. It begins, “O
God, who show the light of your truth to those who go
astray, so that they may return to the right path…”
If GPS has largely eliminated our tendency to go astray in
our travels, what then may we use to keep ourselves along
the path of faith? And, beyond that, when we do find
ourselves lost, how do we return?
This weekend’s liturgy provides the beginning of an
answer to these questions. Turning back to the Opening
Prayer, we are invited to see the light of God’s truth as a
reference point. Indeed, our faith has the potential to be
the rock on which we build our lives. The Prophet Hosea
continues answering these questions, noting that he, like
many others, are called by the Lord to speak about truth
and faith for the benefit of those around them. In other
words, prophets exist not for their own benefit but for
ours. Our Gospel sharpens the image of those sent by
God: beyond prophets, there are those who teach, heal,
and guide on behalf of God.
May we experience the gifts of lights, holy prophets,
devoted healers, and energetic preachers this week. And
may we, if called, be these for others too!
Yours in Christ,
