Changes in Rural Settlements

• Remote rural areas are declining which has many consequences:

• Many of those left behind are elderly• Houses are bought as second homes giving a ‘ghost

town’ effect• Deprivation• Social isolation

• Rural-urban fringes are expanding which has many consequences:

• Several small, new housing estates are built which local people can’t afford

Exam Practise

• Using your knowledge of settlement areas, contrast the housing characteristics of TWO chosen settlement areas (4)

• Inner-city housing tends to be either terraced or high rise flats. The housing is small, and often offers only two-three bedrooms. There tends to be little garden space and back to back housing. Rural settlement areas can also have terraced housing, but these tend to be cottages and are often renovated. We also see larger detached homes and cottages which have more garden space and drives. Rural housing also incorporates renovated barns.
