Lent: Ash Wednesday is February 10th. We have 5 masses scheduled on Wednesday. Check the list of masses in this bulletin for mass times. A reminder of what is required of all the baptized follows: The following comes from the Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB): Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Also this Lent we will be participating with the rest of the Archdiocese in the program: The Light is On. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered every Thursday, beginning this Thursday, from 6:00 pm (after the 5:30 pm mass) until 7:00 pm. Most all Catholic Churches in Omaha will be offering the Reconciliation between 5:30 to 7:00 pm on Thursday nights. The Light is On fits in very well with our First Reading this weekend and the Gospel. In the two readings we hear the call of Isaiah and Simon Peter. As they encounter the divine they recognize that they have faults and do not feel worthy to be in the presence of the divine. Isaiah says, “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” Simon Peter says to Jesus, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Both confess their sinfulness. To Isaiah a seraphim flies and touches his lips with a burning ember saying, “See, now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.” Jesus tells Simon Peter, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” Both Isaiah and Simon Peter admit their sins, both are forgiven and both are given a new mission in life. The same is possible for each of us. We are invited especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy to experience God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Just like Isaiah and Simon Peter, we will be forgiven and sent on a new path with the grace of God. Another way to give to the school: For those who shop on Amazon, they will donate .5% of eligible purchases to a charity of your choice. Our school, SPSL is listed as one of those to whom you can designate for a donation on your purchases. You just have to go to smile.amazon.com instead of the usual amazon.com. Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available in the Multipurpose Room/Library just off the Narthex of the Church on Thursday, February 11th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm and Saturday, February 13th from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. I’m also available by appointment in the office. Call the parish office to set up an appointment.

We are in serious need of volunteers to keep our new church looking like new! In the past two years, relocations and changes in health or work schedules have reduced our ranks. Can you spare an hour on Saturday morning every two months to help dust, vacuum, clean restrooms, wash glass entrance doors? Cleaning begins between 7:30 and 8:30am, depending on the crew. Parish supplies all equipment and supplies. This is a good project for families or students needing service hours. To volunteer as a Dusting Disciple, or for more information, please contact Rita at (402) 556-1201 or [email protected].

RCIA Candidate: Stephanie Sullivan Stephanie Sullivan, her husband Bart, and their daughters Nora and Beatrice attend St. Pius X Church and Nora attends the SPX/SL kindergarten. Stephanie works full time as a teacher and carves out time on

Monday evenings to attend RCIA sessions to find out more about the Catholic faith. Please contact Colleen Ciciulla or the Rectory if you’d like to be a companion on Stephanie’s faith journey. It would be especially fitting for a mother with small children, so you can introduce her to other parishioners at the same life stage.

The music department has been very busy! Earlier in the school year, the 5th and 6th grades performed "Shrek The Musical" They did a fantastic job! Congratulations to lead roles: Andrew Washington (Shrek), Julia Nubel (Fiona) and Ben Howard (Donkey). We had 5 students selected to be in the All State Children's Choir: 4th graders: Bailey Benson and Lilly Rich Bakhit and 5th graders: Trevor Gregg, Ben Howard and Sophia Tripp. The 7th and 8th Grade Girls Chorus

performed before the 2nd and 4th grade Christmas musical on December 10th. The 2nd and 4th graders presented "A Party in the Pear Tree" which is based upon...you guessed it...the 12 Days of Christmas. The Girls Chorus performed at New Cassel on December 15th, and then spent time with the residents spreading Christmas cheer. The Pre-K performed their "Gingerbread Christmas" program on December 16th. The Kindergartners presented their "ABC's of Christmas"

program on December 17th. Audrey Saucier and Jenna Abbott from 7th grade were chosen to be in the UNO Middle School Honor Choir on January 8th. Congratulations everyone! In December, the 5th grade hosted the “Famous Scientists Wax Museum.” After weeks of research, students dressed up as a famous scientist and gave speeches to each visitor for one quarter. The 5th graders raised over $1,000.00 for SPSL families in need during the Christmas season. Great job!

Here at St. Pius X we actively tend to this corporal work of mercy on an ongoing and regular basis. St. Pius has a food pantry that is filled with donations from parishioners and others. You can donate to this by putting items in the basket in the narthex of the church. The pantry can be used by parishioners and others in our neighborhood who might have this

basic need. People simply call the Human Needs line and schedule an appointment to have someone help out. St. Pius also provides meals to the Francis house. Here are some other ways: · See to proper nutrition for your loved ones · Make a few sandwiches to hand out

as you walk through areas where you might encounter people in need · Educate yourself about world hunger · Avoid wasting food · Share your meals with others · Contribute to Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl For more information: Francis House, Michaela Smith, 250-2352----Pantry, Barb Haesaert, 290-4419

Dale reads an hour every day. Kyra and Tony had fun with their cousins, and Peyton’s dog has no more fleas! It’s great to share news that makes one smile.

Spirit of St. Pius: Faith in Action Youth Ministry

Recently, the local news was alive with pictures and stories of young people who, coming back from the March for Life, got stranded on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Throughout the year we also hear and see how young people are doing service in a variety of ways. Here at St. Pius, we can list any number of ways young people are stepping up and reaching out to those in need. Whether it be through the 8th grade Discipleship groups or the Youth Ministry summer service trips and immersion experiences, and other little

things that we are not aware of, they are paving the way. The common expression we hear and read is ‘the youth are the future of the church’. This implies that the youth are not currently active participants in the church. Maybe it is time to challenge this notion. Yes, youth are the future of the church, but in a big ‘Faith in Action’ sort of way, here at St. Pius they are also the ‘church today’. We see them as Eucharistic ministers, lectors, altar servers and musicians, as well as writing cards to

the homebound, hosting the birthday party for Jesus, providing games for the little ones at the parish picnic, collecting donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring and the list goes on. We can encourage them, teach them and hold them in prayer. We can learn about ‘Faith in Action’ from the ‘church today’. For more information on how you can be involved as a youth or an adult in youth ministry, contact: Janet Drvol, Director of Youth Ministry (St. Pius and St. Leos), 558-8446, or email [email protected]
