Alès and the Ecole des Mines d’Alès

Alès is the capital of the Cévennes Region, which covers a mountain area in South France, between the Rhone, the Tarn, the Hérault and the Ardèche Rivers. In this dry region, the inhabitants tra-ditionally live on the production of goats and sheep, wool and cheese, and on the chestnuts, that constitute an important part of the traditional diet. Cevennes was one of the most impor-tant places during the religious wars in France, until the final Peace of Alès in 1629. The development of the region was driven by two main factors, the gener-alisation of silkworm rearing, and the exploitation of coal mines. The Ecole des Mines d’Alès was founded in 1843 to provide managers for the mining industry, then in devel-opment in the region. From 1845 to 1918, the Ecole delivered a technical diploma for the “maîtres-mineurs”, in charge of conducting the work inside the mines. In 1918, the diploma was transformed in an Engineering degree, and then, in 1960, it was incorporated into the French system of “Grandes Ecoles”, the Engineering High Schools. With the gradual decline of the coal extraction and mining activities in the region, the Ecole des Mines evolved to

Dans cette région sèche, les habitants vivaient traditionnellement de l’éle-vage de chèvres et brebis, de la pro-duction de laine et fromage, ainsi que des châtaignes, qui constituaient une partie importante de la diète tradition-nelle. Les Cévennes ont été une des places fortes pendant les guerres de religion, jusqu’à la Paix d’Alès, en 1629. Le développement de la région a été impulsé par deux facteurs majeurs, la généralisation de l’élevage du ver à soie et l’exploitation des mines de charbon. L’Ecole des Mines d’Alès a été fondée en 1843, pour fournir des cadres inter-médiaires pour l’industrie minière, en développement dans la région. Entre 1845 et 1918, l’Ecole délivrait un di-plôme technique, celui de « maître mineur », orienté vers la conduite de travaux à l’intérieur de la mine. En 1918, le diplôme fut transformé en un diplôme d’Ingénieur, puis, en 1960, il a été incorporé dans le groupe des Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs en France. Avec le déclin graduel de l’extraction

train civil and industrial engineers. Nowadays, the Ecole des Mines graduates 160 engineers each year, with five different specialities, materi-als, civil engineering, informatics, automatics, and environment. Silkworm rearing and silk production had a major economic importance in the region. Traditional houses were built for silkworm rearing, with a up-per floor well ventilated to keep a warm temperature optimal for the in-sects, and a huge entrance to supply the mulberry branches needed to feed the silkworms. With the increasing size of the rearing units, together with poor hygiene con-ditions, epizootics of disease devel-oped. The whole silk industry was in danger in 1860, and the producers asked the government for measures. The Minister of Agriculture, Jean Baptiste Dumas, the chemist, born in Alès, who understood this problem, sent Louis Pasteur, also a chemist, to analyse why the silkworms died. Here, Pasteur developed his skills in pathol-ogy that would later be used for ani-mal and human health, leading to the development of vaccines. When Pasteur left Alès, a series of laboratories were set up to monitor silkworm diseases. Until the 1960’s, the Silkworm Research Laboratory was located in Alès. Then, it was transferred to its current location in Lyon.. The Laboratory of Compara-tive Pathology was established in St

de charbon et des autres activités minières dans la région, l’Ecole des Mines d’Alès évolua vers la formation d’ingénieurs en génie civil et techni-ques industrielles. Aujourd’hui, 160 ingénieurs obtiennent leur diplôme chaque année à l’Ecole des Mines d’Alès. Cinq spécialités sont propo-sées, matériaux, génie civil, informati-que, automatique et environnement. L’élevage du ver à soie et la produc-tion de soie ont eu une importance économique majeure dans les Céven-nes. Les maisons traditionnelles ont été conçues pour cette activité, avec un étage supérieur bien ventilé pour garder une température douce opti-male pour les insectes, et avec une grande porte d’entrée, permettant d’a-mener les branches et feuilles de mu-rier nécessaires pour l’alimentation des vers à soie. Avec l’augmentation de la taille des élevages, sans une connaissance des règles d’hygiène, des épizooties se développèrent, mettant en péril la tota-lité de l’industrie de la soie. Ainsi, en 1860 les producteurs réclamèrent de l’aide au Gouvernement français. Le ministre de l’Agriculture, Jean Bap-tiste Dumas, chimiste originaire d’A-lès et connaisseur du problème, de-manda à Louis Pasteur, un autre chi-miste, d’analyser les causes de la mor-talité des vers à soie. Ici, à Alès, Pas-teur acquis les compétences sur le tout nouveau champ de la pathologie, com-pétences qui seraient plus tard transpo-

Christol les Alès, where it stayed until 2004, when it was decided to transfer most of the scientists to Montpellier. The Ecole des Mines d’Alès, with the collaboration of the Alès City Council and the Alès Camber of Trade and Industry, permitted research in insect pathology in Alès by opening a labo-ratory to continue work on insect pa-thology and biological control. Two years ago we meet in Locorro-tondo, where we analysed the Present and Future of invertebrate pathogens in biological control. The meeting we are now opening will address some of the issues that were highlighted there, including resistance management, genetic variability, and registration procedures, that will condition the possibility of industrial development of biological control agents.

Quand Pasteur quitta Alès, une série de laboratoires ont été installés pour la surveillance de l’état de santé des éle-vages de vers à soie. Jusqu’aux années 60, la Station de Recherches Séricico-les est resté à Alès. Après, elle a été déplacée à Lyon, ou cette recherche sur le vers à soie continue. Dans les années 50, le Laboratoire de Pathologie Comparée a été crée. Il resta sur Alès jusqu’en 2004, date à laquelle il fut décidé de transférer la plupart des scientifiques vers Montpel-lier. L’Ecole des Mines d’Alès, avec le soutien des autorités locales, l’agglo-mération et la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie d’Alès ont permis la continuation des recherches en Patho-logie des Insectes en ouvrant un labo-ratoire qui perpétue cette tradition en contrôle biologique. Il y a deux ans, nous nous sommes rencontrés à Locorotondo, pour analy-ser le présent et le futur des pathogè-nes d’invertébrés en Control Biologi-que. La rencontre que nous commen-çons va aborder quelques unes des questions soulevées alors, le manage-ment de la résistance, la variabilité génétique, et aussi, les procédures d’homologation et de mise sur le mar-ché, qui vont conditionner les possibi-lités de développement industriel du contrôle biologique.
