I n order to make use of scale tones, we wil l f i r s t have to ass ign scales to chord types, so we know what s cales to play when we

encounter dif ferent chord types . F or this fir s t s eries of exercis es, we can choose from the modes of the maj or s cale to establi shwhich modes wil l be us ed for which chords.

Fi g. 1 is a diagram outl ining a s et of modes we can us e for some bas ic chord types : ( I MPORT ANT: Each scale/mode would beplayed s tarting from the ROOT of the specified chord.)

    Fi g. 1

For example, if you encountered a C minor 7 chord, you would use the notes of C dor ian (C, D, Eb, F , G, A, Bb, C) for yourwalk ing line. S imi larl y, if you encountered a G 7 chord, you would use the notes of G mixolydian (G, A, B , C, D, E , F, G) to playthrough it.T o clari fy the use of these modes even fur ther, Fi g. 2 shows a diagram li s ting the intervall ic const ruction of each of the modes

    used in Fig.1 .

Now that you under s tand how to connect s elect modes to chord types, it i s time for you to try s ome s cale tone walk ing bas s li nes

on your own. Exercises 4-8 are some sample chord progres s ions for you to walk to. I n each example, make sur e to place the

root of the chord on beat 1 of the measure. T his way you wil l avoid any ambiguity in the harmony of your bas s li nes. T his is not

any type of hard fas t r ule, however. .. As you progress , t here wil l be ins tances in which the integrity of the bas s li ne wil l depend

on you knowing when to us e alternative chord tones on beat 1 or on any other downbeat of a chord change. B efore you s tart

exper imenting wit h that, however, fi r s t t ry and master this type of approach in which the root announces each chord change tothe listener. Have fun!!!
