Dr. Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor Back to Basics: Quilting & Sewing This Monday, Nov 16 at 6:30pm in Room WC117 Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you are welcome to join us. This past spring, we were able to send 31 quilts to children in an orphanage in Guatemala. If you join us, you can help us work on a new group project, or work on a project of your own. For more information, contact Pam at pcole@fbcn. org or 272-5583. Churchwide “Absent from the Body, Present with the Lord” Carolyn Nelson passed away on November 4. Eldora (Jenny) Schulz passed away on November 8. We express our sympathy to these families. A young pastor, fresh out of Seminary, was conducting his first baptismal service. He nervously confused his scriptures and ordinances concerning baptism and the Lord’s Supper. He lowered the person down into the water in immersion and said: “I now baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…and now drink ye all of it!” I certainly hope the man kept his mouth closed. On a more serious note, following the Lord involves obedience to those two and essential symbolic reminders of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. We are to fully embrace and “drink all” of discipleship. I was more chilled in my heart than in my body as I stood by the lake in Zurich, Switzerland in February 1981. I was on my way to a Bible conference. We were reverently being shown the place where Anabaptists, the forerunners of our current Baptist groups, were martyred in the freezing water in mock baptism. Reliving that scene of drowning for the sake of Christ, I thought how convicted American Christians should be who are ashamed to stand publicly for Christ in water baptism by immersion. There are so many excuses why people can’t obey the Lord in His simplest command following a profession of faith. “Those who received His Word were baptized” (Acts 2:41). This is what it means to be “devoted to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42). You have an opportunity this very weekend to give the witness of believer’s baptism at the beach in the waters of the Gulf. Believe me, the Gulf’s coolness is nothing compared to the frigid waters of Switzerland. No one is trying to kill you. As Ananias asked Saul, who later became known as Paul, “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized” (Acts 22:16). We are aware of the courageous testimony of Christians in Syria and Iraq who have been executed by ISIS for refusing to renounce Christ. News outlets no longer show the gruesome scenes of victims being executed in orange jumpsuits, simply for being “Nasrani,” a Muslim pejorative for Christians – those who follow unashamedly the Nazarene, Jesus Christ. The latest Arabic-language news outlets showed videotaped executions on September 23 during a Muslim holiday, “Festival of the Sacrifice.” Their sacrifice for their Savior should spur us with new courage. Talk to a staff member today about being baptized and getting involved in discipleship ministries. You will “never be the same.” We are also proud of our law enforcement officers. Let’s have a huge turnout next Saturday to “Bless the Blue” and “Back the Badge.” If they can risk their lives daily, surely we can take some extra time out of our schedule to encourage them. *There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00am worship services.
