We are delighted to welcome you to the 2019 edition of the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo (ACETCE), brought to you by the organisers of The Big 5, one of the largest global construction events.

Over the next three days, we have come together to drive progress in the construction industry and to address core issues such as transformation, compliance, innovation, design and project opportunities across the African continent. The timing for such an event could not be more crucial given the many industry challenges we are weathering at the moment.

ACETCE will afford you an opportunity to connect with new and old peers so that together we can map a positive way forward to make this sector a sustainable one. Over the next three days, you will get to:

• MEET over 200 exhibiting brands showcasing the latest products and solutions to help you deliver projects on time and on budget;

• EXPERIENCE tools and technology in the indoor and outdoor expo;

• ATTEND the free-to-attend workshop programme (consisting of the Architecture Talks, Smart Talks and Contractors’ Corner) which completes your learning experience by providing you with both practical and educational content and the opportunity to gain CPD points;

• DEBATE / ENGAGE in the stakeholder engagement plenary forum, which will paint a vision for Agenda 2063;

• NETWORK with over 9500 professionals from 45 countries;

• WIN prize and experience giveaways worth over R100 000;

As the continent’s largest gathering of construction, cement and concrete industries we trust that you will leave the event with numerous valuable contacts and great ideas which you can implement immediately to advance your business.

Thank you for your participation and enjoy the experience!

Warm regards,

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, welcomes you to the African Construction Expo 2019.

This all-important expo takes place against a backdrop of massive jobs losses, particularly in the construction sector.

As the City of Johannesburg, we are extremely concerned about this state affairs. I am sure you are too.

Immediate, as well as long-term solutions are sought, which is why this expo could not have come at a more opportune moment.

I would like to believe that, beyond the usual business of advertising products and services, at the core of why we are all gathered here, is to answer the question: how do we get South Africa and South Africans, in particular the youth, working again?

We believe we have a solution that may go some way in answering this all-important question.

The City of Joburg has embarked on an ambitious Inner City Rejuvenation Programme, which seeks to turn Johannesburg into a construction site.

So far, 84 buildings have been offered to private developers and we expect to yield 6500 housing units while realising R20 billion in investment.

From this first phase of the project, 11 000 direct jobs will be created.

A further 70 buildings will be released through open tender by September, yielding about 5000 more housing units and realising an additional R15 billion to R20 billion in investment.

Of course, thousands more jobs will be created during and after construction and tons of building material will be required to do the work. I am excited about the positive ripple effect this programme will have on construction companies.

I therefore call on the construction sector to partner with the City of Joburg to get this sector up and running again, and employing more people.

Thank you,

Tracy-Lee BehrPortfolio Director

Urban population in Africa was reported to be the fastest growing globally and by 2030 Africa will host 6 of the world’s 41 megacities.

Africa’s remarkable urban growth creates major challenges around city infrastructure and service delivery but at the same time provides an abundance of opportunities for both public and private sector players to explore and reinvent urban living in the smartest ways possible.

Welcome to the 3rd annual African Smart Cities Summit, produced by dmg events. Today you will hear key insights into what is being done right now to ensure our future cities are resilient, connected, inclusive, safe, prosperous and smart. You will learn from smart and sustainable project updates from across Africa and explore trends in urban resilience, smarter transportation and better energy management. You will discover how future cities will be connected, intelligent and inclusive through technological innovation such as 5G, IoT and Blockchain.

Thank you for joining us, I promise you will learn and gain tremendous value from attending whilst networking with your fellow industry professionals.

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link was the first rapid rail network in Africa. The rail connection comprises two links, one between Tshwane and Johannesburg and the other between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton. The system offers a fast, convenient, safe and efficient public transport service. It takes 15 minutes to travel from Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport on the Gautrain and 35 minutes from Pretoria in Tshwane to Park Station in Johannesburg. As from the 11 August 2014, the Gautrain’s airport service (Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport) was improved with earlier trains in the mornings and later trains in the evenings.

New investment heralds Jozi’s rebirth

Developers have eagerly snapped up the

first 84 buildings released by the City for

development in the inner city, and more

buildings will be put up for tender.

Through word and deed, investors and developers have

declared their readiness to transform the inner city into

a welcoming home for students, small business and

mixed-income households.

The winning bidders came up with viable proposals on

how they would turn illegal taxi ranks into high-rise

buildings, illegal dumping sites into prime land and

hijacked properties into loft apartments.

In a few months, excavators, cranes, bulldozers and

concrete mixers will roll into the inner city to herald an

era of reconstruction. The Executive Mayor Herman

Mashaba says the private sector is ready to pump over

R20 billion to redevelop the inner city.

“We have moved from bold vision to reality. We have

awarded tenders for 24 developments spanning 84

properties which will create thousands of units. We will

have mixed one and two bedroom units with monthly

rental ranging from R900 to R4 500.”

The properties to be developed are in various parts of

the inner city, including Yeoville, Berea, Turffontein,

Doornfontein, Vrederdorp, Fairview and Marshalltown.

According to Mayor Mashaba, the City has earmarked

over 500 buildings for expropriation and redevelopment

and 70 of these will soon be released to the market.

Many of the buildings will be converted into affordable

student accommodation, family units and business

premises.

The mayor has expressed confidence with the caliber

of appointed developers. “We wanted people with a

healthy balance sheet. I’m happy with developers we’ve

appointed.”

The City of Johannesburg Council released 84 properties for

development and has now added more to turn the Inner City into a

construction site and grow the economy by at least 5%.

Show us how you will convert disused buildings into high-quality

offices, retail spaces, low-cost housing and student accommodation.

In return, the City offers you rates and tax breaks, staggered

discounted rental and other incentives.

Buildings are available on long-term lease agreements, with an

option to purchase. once development is complete.
