Adaptability important in the workplaceEmployee turnover, downsizing,

an economy in flux and many otherfactors contribute to the ever-changing face of business. Whilemen and women might once havehoped to grow old with a company, today’s workers are more inclinedto switch jobs several times beforethey retire.

Companies routinely evolve toserve their customers, a learningprocess that will include some trialand error. Companies should bewilling to try new strategies as theyadapt to ever-changing markets.Workers who are flexible and ableto adapt to adjustments in theworkplace are among the mostdesirable employees.

What defines adaptability varies

depending on the profession, buttaking the time to learn how toaccommodate the needs of bossesand other workers can be a greatway for men and women to ensuretheir long-term success.

• Recognize the likelihood ofchange. Professional environmentsare fluid, and employees who resistchange may find their employersdeem them expendable. Employeesmust recognize that change is partof the business world and must gowith the flow to maintain theirgood standing with employers.

• Look for benefits. A willing-ness to be flexible can benefitemployees just as much as it bene-fits employers. Employees may findthat a flexible schedule or the abil-

ity to telecommute presents newopportunities that can make lifeeasier.

• Keep lines of communicationopen. Many men and women likeworking for companies that arewilling to try new things. Keeplines of communication with super-visors open to ensure your ideasare heard, and encourage subordi-nates to offer their ideas at everyturn.

• Don’t equate flexibility withbeing a pushover. Flexibilityshould not go so far that anemployee feels taken advantage of.As companies change, the processis best if it involves give and takeon the part of employees and theiremployers.

Using moderntechnology to givecustomers whatthey imagine

Rick Terry exudes enthusiastic joy when discussing his work in the jew-elry industry. His love and passion for the work that he’s been doing for 30years is contagious! Whether designing or repairing jewelry, he truly enjoyswhat he does and it brings happiness to others. His sons, Blake and Matt, who have each brought unique talents to the family enterprise, share thesame enthusiasm. They all strive to be on the cutting edge of the jewelryindustry.

As new progressive technological innovations become available Rick andhis sons are in the forefront to take advantage of the possibilities. They usethese advancements to enhance theirtalents for jewelry design and repair. Fewjewelry designers in the region are ascapable as Rick and his sons of turning acustomer’s dream design into reality.

Blake Terry says the new technologiesallow him and Matt to think out of thebox. By coupling their age and thoughtprocesses with their father’s, and hisexperience, they are all able to “mesh”their ideas and creativity. This abilitygives them the opportunity to exceedcustomer expectations.

Rick said he and his team are takingadvantage of design possibilities made

available by the advanced equipment they are using; 3-D Printing, LaserWelding, Engraving and CAD/Cam milling. They are leading the jewelrydesign industry by utilizing old school craftsmanship, giving attention tominute details and using modern technology to give customers what theyimagine.

“We like to mess around with things; ideas, that people don’t even real-ize are possibilities. The technology is out there and it will allow us to cre-ate things we couldn’t before, that will be affordable for everyone,” saidBlake.

With the addition of the computerized engraving equipment they canengrave on almost anything from glass, to wood, brass and more for awards, graduations, retirements and gifts in general. They can add gold foil toleather and paint to other engraved items. “We’re tired of sending cus-tomers out of their way to have things engraved. Bring your items to theFarragut location and we’ll engrave it,” said Rick.

Matthew Terry, an expert in design is the youngest to join the family busi-ness. He trained in Atlanta to operate the CAD/Cam milling machine whichallows him to use special computer software to design a customer’s jewel-ry. He has access to six specialized programs enabling him to produce intri-cate designs.

“It is so exciting for us to take our customers’ ideas and bring them tofruition. We become a part of their lives because we’ve been able to givethem the end product significant to them that may become a meaningfulheirloom and passed down for generations,” said Rick.

Blake and his wife, Rachael, oper-ate Rick Terry Jewelry Designs indowntown Knoxville next to theTennessee theatre. Blake has adegree as a Graduate Gemologist andJewelry Designer having attendedthe Gemological Institute of Americain California, known worldwide forsetting the standards for propergrading of diamonds. His work expe-rience in the diamond industrybefore returning home to Tennesseeincluded an opportunity to work withexperts in Chicago.

He considers himself a “lifer” in the industry, beginning his career at theage of two when he could sit in his highchair pounding away with jeweler’shammers and tools while watching Rick work. Today he designs and repairsjewelry at the same bench his father used for 25 years.

We rarely see Patty Terry, although without her Rick knows Rick TerryJewelry Designs would not exist. “If not for my wife, Patty, this place wouldnot exist; nor would these two boys.” Rick and Patty celebrated their 34thanniversary in August.

Rick Terry Jewelry Designs offersthree locations for customer conven-ience. Their staff members haveyears of experience and extensivetraining garnering a wealth of knowl-edge for fine jewelry and gemstones. They understand the precision andattention to detail that is essentialfor customer satisfaction. Their slo-gan is: “We want to be your jeweler”and Rick Terry’s philosophy, that heoften shares is, “If you don’t knowyour jewelry, know your jeweler.”

Simple ways to connect with your customersEstablishing and maintaining a

lasting connection with customers isa goal for businesses big and small.Nowadays, accomplishing that goalis easier than ever before, as busi-nesses can take advantage of theInternet and social media to keep intouch with their customers and keepthose customers abreast of sales orspecial offers.

But establishing the initial con-nection that makes customers wantto bring their business to you timeand again can be more difficult. While a great product or service is atthe core of every successful business, savvy business owners know thevalue of connecting with their cus-tomers on a deeper level. The follow-ing are some simple ways businessesbig and small can connect with their

customers.• Share your history. Sharing the

history of your business is a simpleyet effective way to establish a per-sonal connection with your cus-tomers, many of whom may enjoylearning how your business started, especially if you overcame difficultodds before ultimately becomingsuccessful. Sharing the history of abusiness that has withstood the testof time also inspires customer confi-dence, as many consumers correctlyfeel that a company that has beenaround a long time must be doingsomething right to keep its doorsopen.

• Survey the troops. Surveys areanother valuable tool you can use toengage and connect with customers.Surveys allow businesses to learn

what’s working and what’s not work-ing with regard to pleasing their cus-tomers, and customers will appreci-ate that you value their feedback andwant to know how you can maketheir experiences more enjoyable.Surveys can be administered in per-son when customers visit your store. In such instances, ask customers toreturn the surveys on their next visit.Surveys also can be administered viaemail or social media platforms. When designing the surveys, includea section for comments where cus-tomers can include any suggestionsor concerns.

• Promptly respond to emailsand other feedback. Customers will-ing to take the time to email a busi-ness to share their experiences orprovide feedback, be it positive or

negative, appreciate when thosebusinesses respond in a timely fash-ion. A timely response to such feed-back indicates that your businessvalues its customers and their input. When responding to negative feed-back, investigate any incidents orproblems before responding so youare in a better position to addressthe customer’s concerns.

• Make it personal. Wheneverpossible, personally respond to newcustomers to thank them for theirbusiness and encourage them toreturn. Responding personally tosurvey participants, customers orothers who provide feedbackthrough a card, note or message is agreat way to foster a lasting and pos-itive relationship with clients andcustomers.

Networking tips for working professionalsNetworking plays an integral

role in professional growth. Menand women who can nurture rela-tionships within their fields aremore likely to be in tune withwhat’s going on in their profes-sions, and a network of fellow pro-fessionals can help men andwomen advance their careers.

But networking often falls by thewayside for today’s busy profes-sionals, many of whom simply can’tfind the time in their hectic sched-ules to foster relationships withprofessional colleagues. But thebenefits of networking are numer-ous, and it behooves men andwomen to make an effort to buildand maintain strong professionalnetworks.

• Recognize the benefits of net-working. Networking not only ben-efits individuals but also the com-panies those individuals own orwork for. While many people viewnetworking as a means to one dayfinding a new job, networking ismuch more than that. When youfoster a professional relationship, the other person in that relation-ship will be quick to think of youwhen they need a given service orare asked for a referral. That canbenefit business owners’ bottomlines, but even men and womenwho don’t own a business can ben-efit, as their bosses will no doubtrecognize the role they played inbringing in new business.

• Make networking a priority.Once professionals recognize thatnetworking is about more than justbuilding a web of contacts who can

help them find their next job, theycan begin to prioritize networkingso it can help them in their exist-ing jobs. Make an effort to keep intouch with current and previousclients and any other contactsmade over the years. Something assimple as an email to catch up oran inquiry to see if there’s anythingfellow professionals need will helpyou stay on their minds, which canhelp you bring in new business orlearn about new opportunitiesdown the road. Maintaining andbuilding a professional networkdoes not always require a lot ofwork, as even seemingly small ges-tures can pay big dividends if menand women prioritize such efforts.

• Revisit your network fromtime to time. A network is onlybeneficial if it remains current.Keep track of the professionals inyour network so you know whenand where to reach them shouldyou need to do so. A professionalnetworking site such as LinkedInis a great way to stay on top of whatyour network is up to, and such asite also is a valuable tool when youwant to update your network withany new information about your-self. Revisit your network a fewtimes each year, updating with anynew information so you aren’t leftscrambling for email addresses orphone numbers when the timecomes to get back in touch withyour contacts.

• Avoid networking only whenyou need something. You can like-ly name a few of your fellow profes-sionals who only seem to contact

you when they want something. You don’t want to earn a similarreputation among your own con-tacts, so don’t forget to make peri-odic contact with your colleagueseven when you don’t need any-thing. A simple email to catch upand to offer some unsolicited helpif any is needed can be enough toprevent you from earning a reputa-

tion as a me-first contact and putyou in a positive light that can ben-efit you throughout your career.

Networking can easily be seen ina negative light. But professionalswho network the right way will findthat their efforts pay dividends forthemselves, their companies andeven their professional colleagues.

FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS • OCTOBER 30, 2014 • 15

Our family:The key to the success of any business is its people.

Farragutpress has been fortunate to have assembled a family of hardworking, dedicated “family” members who are willing to work around the clock in order to service our advertisers and to ferret out feature and hard news stories.

Our account executives are some of the best in the industry and won’t settle for second-best on the quality of display advertising for our clients.

The same can be said for our folks in the production department. Their meticulous attention to detail makes them a tremendous asset for our clients and account executives.

Enough can’t be said about our editorial folks. These men and women are out on the street finding interesting stories about local residents, covering the high school sports teams and letting the community know about what’s new in the area and what’s happening at our places of worship.

Then once the newspaper is put together and returned from the printer it’s delivered to just about every household in the town of Farragut, usually the same day it’s printed.

From start to finish, for 26 years, the family at farragutpress has dedicated themselves to providing the highest quality newspaper in Town.
