Importance of Junior and Senior Year
Things that are considered for admission into higher education
It’s like a puzzle
Each component is a piece of the whole puzzle
If a student doesn’t do well in a particular area doesn’t mean they won’t get into a really good college
Aim to have college application well-rounded and well-planned
What do colleges consider when reviewing applications?
GPA & Class Rank
Applying during Senior year so colleges see Freshman to Junior Year grades for admission. Can revoke admission or waitlist status based on
senior transcript GPA will be out of 4.0 scales or 6.0 scale
depending on classes Need to be on recommended plan or
distinguished graduation plan Automatic admission and scholarship
available for high class rank
Standardized Tests
SAT/ACT scores are very important- admission and scholarship
Practice, practice, practice to score the best possible
Understand what will be on the test as well as how you will be tested
Challenging Curriculum
Take AP/IB/dual credit classes Prepare yourself for college classes
Letters of Recommendation
Most likely they will come from junior teachers Form good relationships with counselors and
teachers Get college advice Know you better to write a better recommendation
Activity & Interests
Colleges want to see that their students will be involved in campus life
Great way to distinguish between well qualified applicants
Community service, clubs, extra curricular activities, sports, jobs, internships
Help you to figure out your interests for major or career paths
During school year as well as summer breaks
Financial Aid
2 main ways to receive financial aid For those who can’t afford the cost to attend
college (family’s financial situation) money given based on talent or merit
(performance in high school) Colleges are more willing to give money to
students who make good grades, take challenging courses, and who are involved in their school and community
