10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Quick Write:
Yesterday you observed and recorded various rock properties (characteristics). Today you will be sorting rocks into groups. List rock properties you could use for the sort.
Announcements:•Quiz corrections due TODAY. Retakes Friday at lunch.•Diagrams can be edited and turned back in for additional credit•Scientist reports will be due October 14th
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Rock Sort:
Work on either the Nankoweap rocks or the North Canyon rocks.
• How are some alike and different?
• Sort the rocks from the North Canyon and the rocks from the Nankoweap Canyon.
• Give the groups names!

North Canyon sorted by ________
________ rocks ________ rocks
Sort the rocks from the North Canyon and the rocks from the Nankoweap Canyon. Only use one group at a time.

Lab Safety-Follow directions-Proper and careful use of materials-Safety equipment
Recall eyewash demonstration-Keep materials away from your face
We are working with dilute hydrochloric acid, HClHCl is dangerous if in contact with eyes or ingested
-Wear goggles-Gently use a small amount-Never point bottle at anyone-Clean up carefully-WASH HANDS, then remove goggles

-Demonstration of acid test
Rocks on paper towel (numbers down)
Gently wipe off an area on the rock
Gently put one drop of acid on a rock
Observe and record on yesterday’s table or as shown:

TASK:-Perform acid test and record observations-Clean up & wash hands-Remove goggles and place in box-Sort rocks with new information

The acid test
• Which rocks fizzed?
• Did these rocks share other properties?
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Calcite
• The material in the rock that reacted with the acid was calcite.
• Calcite is composed of Calcium
Carbon and Oxygen.
CaCO3.
• When acid reacts with calcite a gas is given off, hence fizzing.
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
• Did you see a gas?
• What was it?
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Limestone
• This is the name given to rocks containing calcite.
• Calcite reacts with the acid and gives off a gas
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Sandstone
• This is the name given to rocks that are made out of particles of sand, cemented together.
• What characteristics do these rocks have?
10/2/08 Sorting Rocks Lesson #21
Shale
• Which rock # has not been mentioned?
• Shale is a fine grained rock that has splintery layers.
• Acid sits on the rock with no reaction.
• Plant fossils

Naming the rocks
• Limestone
• Sandstone
• Shale
