There full bio can be seen (http://www.thefools-band.com/html/museum.htm). The scintillating lead singer of THE FOOLS has a new project, his band Mike Girard’s Big Swing Thing. It’s A BIG BAND but it’s not your typical Big Band. It’s ROCK & ROLL with HORNS… A ton of them! They have been preform-ing sold out show throughout New England

Annual Breast Health Day
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it’s also a good time for women to think about mam-mograms and breast cancer screenings. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Women’s Imaging Center at Nashoba Valley Medical Center, 200 Groton Road in Ayer, Massachusetts, will host its annual Breast Health Day for women living in the Nashoba Valley region. Walk-in digital mammograms appoint-ments are available throughout the day, along with giveaways, breast health information, refreshments and a free raffle drawing for a picnic basket filled with goodies.
The Women’s Imaging Center offers full-field digital mammography, which is dif-ferent from conventional mam-mography in how the image of the breast is viewed and, more
importantly, manipulated. It also offers patients additional distinct advantages over traditional film-based exams, including enhanced image quality, shorter wait times for results, and reduced radiation exposure.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), it’s esti-mated that a woman’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in eight and mammogra-phy is the most effective method of screening for breast cancer.
“Early detection is the key to higher survival rates and better prognosis,” said Jennifer Stone, MD, Nashoba Valley Medical Center’s medical director of the Center for Cancer Care. “Women in their 20s and 30s should have a breast exam at their regular health checkups at least every three years. After age 40, women should have an annual mammo-gram as well as a clinical breast exam every year and perform monthly self-exams. Women
at greater risk of breast cancer should have a breast care sched-ule designed by their physician.”
“An annual mammogram remains the best tool for breast cancer detection as a mammo-gram can detect abnormalities in a woman’s breasts well before they will ever feel it themselves,” said Nashoba Valley Medical Center Radiologist Matthew Foley, MD. “Yet, statistics still show that not enough women are getting screened. According to the ACS, only about half of all women ages 40 to 65 report having a mammogram within the past year. It’s very important to have an annual mammogram even if you do not have a family history of breast cancer as this does not decrease your chance of getting breast cancer.”
For more information about the Women’s Imaging Center Breast Health Day or to schedule a mammogram, 978-784-9272 or visit www.nashobamed.org/The-Womens-Imaging-Center.

Meeting Friends Oxbow Refuge
The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge will be held on October 24, 2015, at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Pavilion on Hospital Road in Devens from 2-4 p.m.
Early Birds can take a short, guided walk at 1 pm to observe waterfowl on one of the back-
water ponds nearby. Meet in the parking lot at the pavilion.
A quick business meeting will start promptly at 2 p.m. to be fol-lowed by two special programs. First Wilson Andres Acuna will briefly talk about his folded paper insects, several of which are on display. He will explain how and why he created these amazing replicas from the world of Arthropods.
Second, naturalist and wild
food gatherer Stephen DeFlorio, will, after a short presentation, lead us in the exploration of edi-ble plants and nuts right outside the pavilion. Even in the fall, there is a variety of wild food available. He will also explain which edibles to leave alone because of their rarity. He will have some cooking instructions, general information, and field guides to browse through, and hopefully, some samples to taste. To protect the natural habitat, F. & W. rules prohibit the collect-ing of any materials on Refuge grounds.
The program is open to people age 8 and up. Dress appropri-ately for the weather.
In case of heavy rain, Stephen, after a brief talk on edible plants, will guide us in the making of cordage with natural materials.
At 4:00pm, there will be a guided tour of the area surround-ing the pavilion. This walk will include the boardwalk to the planned canoe launch.
Dress warmly, as there is no heat in the pavilion.

Local Freemasons Welcome Public
Caleb Butler Lodge 11 Sculley Road Ayer, MA 01432 will open their doors to the public on Saturday, October 17th, from 9 am until 3 pm. If you’ve ever wondered who the Freemasons are, whether they are the descen-dants of the Knights Templars, or what the inside of their buildings look like, here’s your chance to find out!
More than 220 lodges will be hosting Open Houses to help the public gain a better understand-ing of Freemasonry and to dem-onstrate the positive impact it has on its members, their families, and their communities. Members
will provide tours of their build-ing, talk about Freemasonry’s history, discuss its rituals, signs, and symbols, and explain what they do.
“The Open House is a great opportunity for anyone inter-ested in learning more about Freemasonry to meet and talk with Masons in their commu-nity,” said Harvey J. Waugh, Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts, and the presiding officer of over 30,000 members. “Although many have heard of us, very few are aware that for over 282 years we have been part of an unbroken tradition of great men who have changed our world in a number of ways. Men like Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thurgood Marshall, and John Glenn all joined the Masons prior to achieving the greatness we recognize them for. Today, there are countless others that have made their families, workplaces, and communities better because they are Masons. I warmly invite the public to join us on October 17th.”
Freemasons trace their roots to the stonemason guilds that built Europe’s cathedrals and castles during the early part of the last millennium. As construction of these buildings declined, they began accepting members from outside their trade. These new members, influenced by the “Age of Enlightenment,” transformed the organization from a group for builders to one focused on devel-oping the character of its mem-bers. Freemasonry was formally organized in London, England in 1717. In 1733 it was formal-ly organized in Massachusetts, making it the oldest Masonic group in the Western Hemisphere and the third oldest in the world.
Freemasonry, the world’s old-est and largest fraternity, seeks to bring together men of every coun-try, religion, race, background, and opinion in order to develop the bonds of friendship between

Sudoku
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Learn How To Recognize And
Prevent A Severe Allergic Reaction
Most people know some-one who is allergic to a bee sting, penicillin, or some type of food. What many people don’t know is that these allergic reac-tions can be fatal. “Food aller-gies are increasingly common, especially among children, and thus pose a special risk,” says Sharon Schumack, Director of Education for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter.
Allergist John Saryan, MD, will be the group’s speaker on Monday, October 19 at 6:45 p.m. at the Metro-Northwest Asthma & Allergy Educational Support Group, which meets at the Children’s Hospital/Beth Israel Medical Care Center, 482 Bedford St., Lexington. The pro-gram is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.
Dr. Saryan will explain how to recognize, prevent, and treat anaphylaxis, and how to decide when to use epinephrine, the life-saving medication that comes in
automatic injector devices that are easy for everyone to use. There will be time for questions and discussion. Dr. Saryan is Chair of the Dept. of Allergy and Immunology at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Burlington, MA.
“It is important for everyone to know how to recognize the symptoms of a life-threatening reaction, and be prepared to give immediate treatment,” says Laurel Francoeur of Woburn, co-leader of the group. “We espe-cially encourage parents, teach-ers, child care providers, and the friends and relatives of people with allergies, to attend. What they learn may help save a life some day.”
AAFA New England orga-nizes educational support group programs throughout the region, publishes a newsletter, and runs a telephone resource and refer-ral line for people coping with allergies and asthma. For more information, or free brochures, call (781)444-7778 or see www.asthmaandallergies.org.

Clean up the Brussels sprouts by removing any ratty outside leaves, cutting them in half through the root base and giv-ing them a toss in olive oil with salt and pepper. Place them on a roasting pan and cook them in the hot oven for 25 minutes or until they are slightly caramelized and tender to a knife passing through them. Cut the onions into rounds, give them a toss in oil with salt and pepper and roast in the same way as the sprouts. Preheat broiler or prepare bar-becue (medium-high heat). Broil or grill steak until cooked to desired doneness, about 3 min-utes per side for medium-rare. It is important not to overcook the meat and keep it on the rarer side. Also, in order to achieve the best results, let the steak rest well (no less than 10 minutes) before slic-ing it. This will help preserve the juices and allow the meat to relax. Thinly slice steak crosswise. Toss the sprouts with the onion rings and crumble a bit of the blue cheese into the mixture. Season and add a bit of extra virgin olive oil to help the ingredients of the “salad” marry. Squeeze a bit of lemon in as well. Set on top of the roast slices and serve.

FAMILY FEATURES
This year, nd creative ways to elevate your holiday hosting with a time-smart approach that’s no less gourmet. Look for versatile recipes that can be made ahead, reheated in minutes and served straight
from the oven to make holiday entertaining stress-free.Creative combinations of fresh, seasonal
ingredients transform typical casserole dishes from mundane to gourmet fare t for any holiday occasion. But delicious time-smart cooking actually starts with the right cookware, such as the Anolon Advanced Umber casserole pan, which seamlessly moves from stove top to oven to table with a unique umber nish that brings warmth to your holiday spread. Anolon’s high-performance, exceptionally crafted cook ware, bakeware, cutlery and gadgets are offered in a wide selection to satisfy each home cook’s unique style.
Another time-smart way to elevate your holiday entertaining is offering a selection of high quality wines to accompany your meal. Look for wines that consistently exhibit intense layers of avor with complexity and balance, such as Kendall-Jackson’s Vintner’s Reserve collection. For example, Kendall-Jackson’s 2013 Pinot Noir uses grapes grown in California’s cool coastal vineyards to achieve avors of ripe strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and dark
cherry. Five months of aging in French oak barrels layers on aromatic hints of toast, vanilla and cedar.
Start your holiday menu with a versatile and savory bread pudding, created by Irvin Lin, author of the blog, Eat the Love. This winter dish is ideal for a crowd and offers the exibility of serving smaller portions as a side item or larger portions for a main course.
“This bread pudding is perfect for a holiday brunch, easy lunch or casual holiday dinner,” Lin said. “It can be made ahead of time for convenience and served at room temperature or warmed up.”

Savory Mushroom, Bacon and Gruyere Bread PuddingServings: 6 1/2 pound bacon 1/2 pound (about 1/2 loaf) crusty sourdough bread 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh ground pepper, divided 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 cups chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped red pepper 1/2 pound sliced button mushrooms 1/4 cup chopped parsley leaves 2 teaspoons dried oregano 4 large eggs 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Gruyere cheese, dividedPlace bacon in freezer to chill. This will help make it easier to chop. Heat oven to 375 F. Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes and place in large bowl. Drizzle olive oil over bread and sprinkle with thyme, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and garlic powder. Toss with spatula to coat evenly, then spread bread evenly in one layer onto rimmed baking sheet. No need to clean bowl yet. Bake bread for 20 minutes or until bread starts to turn golden. Remove from oven and lower oven temperature to 350 F. Remove bacon from freezer and nely chop it. In 3 1/2-quart oven-proof stovetop casserole pan, cook bacon over medium-high heat until crispy. Use slotted spoon to move bacon pieces to bowl lined with paper towel. Pour bacon grease out, but don’t wipe out pan. Add garlic to pan and cook over medium heat for 30 seconds or until it starts to smell fragrant. Add onions, celery and red pepper and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add mushrooms and cook until all vegetables are soft, about 5 more minutes. Season with remaining salt and pepper. Pour toasted bread into original large bowl and add vegetables and cooked bacon. Add parsley leaves and dried oregano, and mix together with large spatula. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs and cream. Pour over bread and vegetables, add 1/2 the shredded Gruyere cheese and mix with spatula. Pour entire contents back into casserole pan.
Sprinkle top of pudding with remaining cheese. Place in oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until top of bread pudding has turned golden brown and cheese is melted. Serve warm.

Compassion In Her Bones
(NAPSM)—Can you remem-
ber what you thought, felt and
hoped for 16 years ago?
Neither can Altonet Fillmore,
a charismatic person with kind
eyes and a ready smile. But then
as now, a reservoir of compas-
sion resided in her bones—and
compelled her to register as a
bone marrow donor with the Be
The Match Registry.
Today, the 36-year-old woman
is a human resources profes-
sional with a passion for sing-
ing. Her impressive vocals led
her to compete in national talent
shows, including “Star Search,”
“American Idol” and “Showtime
at the Apollo.”
In 1996, when Altonet joined
the registry, she was still an
idealistic college freshman. It
wasn’t until 2012—16 years
later—that she learned she was a
match for a middle-aged woman
with leukemia.
And that’s when she discov-
ered something about herself:
Time hadn’t altered her call to
compassion.
Donors Save Lives
“I felt it was a privilege and an
honor to be able to give some-
thing that my body makes every
day and be able to save a life,”
she said.
Around the world, 25 million
caring people like Altonet have
joined international volunteer
marrow donor registries in hopes
of being the cure for a patient
in need.
A marrow or umbilical cord
blood transplant is a potentially
life-saving treatment for leuke-
mia, lymphoma and sickle cell
disease. It can also help to cure
more than 70 other diseases,
including inherited immunode-
ficiency disorders and metabolic
disorders. Be The Match con-
nects patients with their donor
match for life-saving marrow or
cord blood transplants.
Donors have helped to save
a quarter of a million lives. But
thousands of other patients who
face life-threatening diseases are
still waiting for their match.
More potential donors are
especially needed by African
American patients, whose chanc-
es of finding a matching donor
are only 66 to 76 percent. People
are more likely to match some-
one of their own race or ethnic-
ity.
A Rewarding Experience
There are many mispercep-
tions about bone marrow dona-
tion, and Altonet heard them all
before her donation—including
stories that it’s a painful or dan-
gerous process. But with anes-
thesia, Altonet didn’t feel any
pain during the procedure. And
she returned to work just two
days after her donation—a com-
mon scenario.
“Don’t listen to what you may
have heard—speak with people
who are able to give you correct
information about the process,”
said Altonet. “It’s a rewarding
experience, and if you are ever
selected to donate bone mar-
row, then you should definitely
consider it.”
The Voice Of Compassion
A few months after her dona-
tion, Altonet learned that her
bone marrow recipient was doing
well and out of the hospital.
Although she didn’t know her,
Altonet was deeply moved by the
woman’s struggle.
“The one thing she taught me
was how to love a stranger,” she
said. “I prayed for her more than
I prayed for myself or anyone
else in a long time.”
Today, Altonet is using her
inspired voice and spirit to
encourage more people—espe-
cially those of African American
descent—to join the Be The
Match Registry as potential bone
marrow donors.
Join The Registry
By joining the Be The Match
Registry as a committed poten-
tial bone marrow donor, you
could be the cure for someone
suffering from a life-threatening
disease, too. In fact, you could
be a patient’s only chance to
survive. And it only takes a few
minutes to join.
For Altonet, it’s in her bones
to care. Knowing that her bone
marrow saved a life enriches her
own life every day.
You can also contribute to
the cure as a financial contribu-
tor or volunteer. Be The Match
provides patients and their fami-
lies one-on-one support, educa-
tion and guidance throughout the
transplant process.

Avery Male, 1 year old, black and white cat.
Someone forgot to tell me I’m not a kitten anymore. I just love to play and if you have a toy and I want it, then I might push another cat outta the way to get it. It would be best to place me in a home with older kids and I really need a good workout every day cuz I have lots of energy. I’d be great by myself and if I’m with another cat, please understand that I’ll want to be the boss. All cats have been spayed/neu-tered and are up to date on shots. Please visit our website at www.catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and crafts.
