Minia. The Mackay-Bennett was launched in September 1884and this photo was taken soon thereafter while the ship wasanchored in Halifax Harbour and "looking" eastward towardsthe Dartmouth shore. It is almost certainly the work of WilliamNotman, a Scottish photographer working in Canada, as thestyle and negative number found in the lower margin are similarto other known examples of Notman's work. Interestingly,Notman was an official photographer for the Centennialcelebration of the United States, he won the only gold medal tobe awarded by the British judges there; and his portraitidentification card required for entrance to the grounds was thepredecessor of many of today's photo ID cards. Notman'soriginal collection of negatives, perhaps including the negativefor this image, are housed at the McCord Museum of CanadianHistory in Montreal. there was some initial confusion regarding its disposition, Gill'sbody was buried at sea. Numerous objects were recoveredfrom his body and catalogued before they were returned to hiswidow. One of the items returned was this 1906 U.S. silver halfdollar coin which Gill had acquired to spend in America. Gill'swidow could not spend it in England and retained it along withGill's other effects which remained in the family for some time. The coin was included in the list of recovered body effectsprepared by the provincial coroner of Nova Scotia. The itemsreturned to Gill's widow, along with various correspondenceand related items, constituted the most complete archive ofpersonal items relating to any Titanic victim known to exist.Henry Aldridge & Son was pleased to be able to offer the entirearchive for sale in its April 2002 Titanic and White Star Lineauction. The coin could easily form the centre piece of anycollection. It tells a very real story not only of the Gills but of thehopes and dreams shattered by the tragedy that befell so manyon the ship that night. That a coin belonging to Gill survived thedisaster while Gill, himself, did not is poignant. This may be thelast opportunity to acquire this important piece of Titanic's story.Accompanied by a colour copy of the catalogue cover picturingthe coin from our April 2002 sale.

She had been in Paris reporting on French fashions whenshe decided to return to the United States on Titanic. Althoughsomewhat of a celebrity in her own right as a fashion writer andwar correspondent, Russell's real claim to fame began after shemet Titanic historian Walter Lord at the New York premier of the1953 Titanic film. She and Lord became good friends and Lordincluded her story in his legendary book "A Night to Remember"(Henry Holt, 1955). Afterwards, Russell served as the technicaladvisor to the 1958 film version of 'A Night to Remember' (RankOrganisation, 1958) which featured her musical pig, Maxixe, named after the ragtime song it played. Russell's mother hadgiven it to her as a good luck mascot and she brought it withher on Titanic. A steward fetched it from her cabin before shegot into a lifeboat. Russell died in London in 1975. Shebequeathed the toy pig to Lord who then bequeathed it to theMaritime Museum at Greenwich, where it is now on display.According to Lord, the song still played when he wound thepig's tail. This lot consists of a seven page typed draft letterfrom Russell to an unnamed recipient, addressed "Dear Sir,"and headed, "Paris, 12th April 1917". The letter contains

detailed information and advice on current fashions andseasonal trends as well as some of Russell's opinions on thefashions. My dear Norah & Edie Thanks foryour letter received this morning which I was glad to have & toknow that you were allright . I would have written to you but sobusy & so uncertain what I was going to do. I am on the Titanicbut I am not sure I am sailing on her yet, I tried to get toLiverpool yesterday but could not manage it but I am not quitesure of going yet. I am wondering whether Mother has had thebusiness settled yet. Will you ask her to let me know. I think MrWilliams was arranging it for her without any expense ask herto let me know, if I go on this ship we sail on Wednesday & willbe back in 17 days & I will try & come up then I have been keptvery busy on board all day on Good Friday & again todaySunday with the crew getting the ship ready she is very farbehind to sail on Wednesday working on her night & day, she isan improvement on the Olympic in many respects & is awonderful ship the latest thing in shipbuilding I would like you allto see her I hope you like you new business & that you will geton there until something better turns up I don't think I havemuch more to say hope to see you all soon with very best loveto mother & you both from Uncle Harry. This is the only knownexample of a letter written by such a senior officer on Titanic, asWilde was Captain E.J. Smith's 2nd in command. Chief OfficerHenry Wilde perished in the disaster and was only transferredto Titanic from R.M.S. Olympic at the last moment. The letter iswritten on three sides.

Lot: 341R.M.S. TITANIC: Stunning Titanic lifeboat photograph. Originalvery close-in photo of Titanic's lifeboats being lowered fromCarpathia's boat deck at White Star Line's Pier 59 in New York. The image shows minute detail, even showing the operation ofthe pulley mechanism for lowering the lifeboats which can beseen in action, along with crewmen in the boats to work theother end as they were lowered into the water. One can onlyassume that once they were lowered, the crewmen had to rowthe boats to the dock as there does not appear to be any otherway to have tethered them to the pier. Throngs of passengersare curiously absent from the outer decks. The survivors weredoubtless anxiously awaiting their next stop at Cunard's Pier 54where they would finally disembark. This photograph single-handedly captures a process that is often referred to only inpassing. The off-loading of Titanic's lifeboats was clearly morethan a footnote in Titanic's saga and, as evidenced here, quitean involved process rather than a "brief stop" to unload Titanic'slifeboats as is often described. 6ins. x 8ins.

Lot: 345R.M.S. TITANIC: Extremely important First Class onboardluncheon menu from April 14th 1912, this example is one ofonly a handful of its type in existence, it is sold via directdescent from First Class passenger Dr. Washington Dodge. Dr.Dodge was travelling on Titanic with his wife & son, WashingtonJunior, occupying Cabin A84 which cost £81.17s. 2d. Dr.Dodge was rescued in lifeboat No. 13, but his wife and sonwere in No. 5. It gives a fascinating insight into the culinaryexperience of First Class passengers onboard Titanic and whatthey ate on the last lunch served on the ship. Served overseveral courses the passengers had the choice of Egg AArgenteuil, Consommé Fermier, Chicken a 'la Maryland orGalantine of Chicken to name but a few of the 40 options onoffer. Shortly after arriving in New York aboard the rescue shipCarpathia Dr. Dodge was interviewed and gave his account ofthe last hours of the ship. "We had retired to our stateroom, andthe noise of the collision was not at all alarming. We had justfallen asleep. My wife awakened me and said that somethinghad happened to the ship. We went on deck and everythingseemed quiet and orderly. The orchestra was playing a livelytune. They started to lower the lifeboats after a lapse of someminutes. There was little excitement as the lifeboats were beinglaunched; many of the first-cabin passengers expressed theirpreference of staying on the ship. The passengers were

constantly being assured that there was no danger, but that asa matter of extra precaution the women and children should beplaced in the lifeboats. Everything was still quiet and orderlywhen I placed Mrs. Dodge and the boy in the fourth or fifthboat. I believe there were 20 boats lowered away altogether. Idid what I could to help in keeping order, as after the sixth orseventh boat was launched the excitement began. Some of thepassengers fought with such desperation to get into thelifeboats that the officers shot them, and their bodies fell intothe ocean. It was 10:30 when the collision occurred, and 1:55o'clock when the ship went down, Major Archibald Butt stoodwith John Jacob Astor as the water rolled over the Titanic. I sawColonel Astor, Major Butt and Captain Smith standing togetherabout 11:30 o'clock. There was absolutely no excitementamong them. Captain Smith said there was no danger. Thestarboard side of the Titanic struck the big berg and the ice waspiled up on the deck. None of us had the slightest realizationthat the ship had received its death wound. Mrs. [Isidor] Strausshowed most admirable heroism. She refused in a verydetermined manner to leave her husband, although she wastwice entreated to get into the boats. Straus declined with greatfor to get in the boat while any women were left. I wish youwould say for me that Colonel Astor, Major Butt, Captain Smithand every man in the cabins acted the part of a hero in thatawful night. As the excitement began I saw an officer of theTitanic shoot down two steerage passengers who wereendeavouring to rush the lifeboats. I have learned since thattwelve of the steerage passengers were shot altogether, oneofficer shooting down six. The first-cabin men and womenbehaved with great heroism." "One of the stewards of theTitanic, with whom Mrs. and Mrs. Dodge had crossed theAtlantic before on the Olympic, knew them well. He recognizedDodge as the thirteenth boat was being filled. The steeragepassengers were being shot down and some of the steeragepassengers were stabbing right and left in an endeavour toreach the boat. The thirteenth boat was filled on one side withchildren, fully 20 or 30 of them, and a few women. All in theboat were panic-stricken and screaming. The steward had beenordered to take charge of the thirteenth, and, seizing Dodge, pushed him into the boat, exclaiming that he needed his help incaring for his helpless charges. Dodge said that when the boatswere drawing away from the ship they could hear the orchestraplaying "Lead, Kindly Light," and rockets were going up fromthe Titanic in the wonderfully clear night. "We could see fromthe distance that two boats were being made ready to belowered. The panic was in the steerage, and it was that portionof the ship that the shooting was made necessary. "I will neverforget," Mrs. Dodge said, "the awful scene of the great steameras we drew away. From the upper rails heroic husbands andfathers were waving and throwing kisses to their womenfolk inthe receding lifeboats." The steward that Dr Dodge referred toin his interview was Frederick Dent Ray, the menu carries ahand written inscription on its reverse With compliments & bestwishes from Frederic Dent Ray, 56 Palmer Park, Reading,Berks". The menu itself is said to have survived the sinking inMrs Dodge's purse and has remained with the Dodge familysince.
