Industrial Scale
Bruichladdich100% Scottish
But it could be 100% islay for all of their products!
Bruichladdich distillery has their own small-scale bot-tling plant.
The only one on the island!
Bruichladdich do not chill fil-ter their whiskies.
This means the entire distill-ing process is completed on Islay.
Could the maltings not be moved here too?

Current ProjectsIslay limpet
Built in 2000
250kW
The first commercial wave powered generator connected to the national grid.
Air is forced in and out of the limpet by the rising and falling of the waves against the outside. This pushes and sucks air through a turbine which creates the energy.
Islay tidal array
Completion by 2016 (largest in the world)
10 mW (from 10 turbines)
Located in the sound between Islay and Jura, it will be able to power 5000 homes in the area.
Lifting the Spirit
A new system for moving whisky casks from the Speyside area, to the warehouses which are located in central Scotland, by train, this also links Speyside to the bot-tling halls.
The journey is around 200 miles and will mean a large reduction in lorry movements which will free up the A9 to other traffic.
The trains run twice per week and on their return can bring empty casks from the cooperages in central Scotland and barley ready for whisky production.
Funded by Moray council, Highlands and Island transport Partnership and Highlands and Islands enterprise.

BruichladdichProposed 100% IslayBarley grown on Islay, and processed by the farmer to be sent on.
Malting process will be moved from Bairds on main-land Scotland to the local Port Ellen maltings on Islay. This reduces the miles wast-ed taking the barley from Is-lay to Inverness and back.
Energy consumption will be improved by reducing the amount of heat which is wast-ed during the fermentation and distillation process. It will also be sourcing elec-tricity from renewable tidal sources around Islay.

Addition/change to system
IslayMainland
The introduction of a cooperage centralised on the island will reduce the amount of travelling between mainland cooperages and Islay. This is also a great opportunity to improve employment prospects for young people on the island, to help to stabilise the island population.
Bruichladdich have their own bottling plant, so would only need bottles and packaging to be im-ported to Islay. A centralised bottling plant could also be incorporated into the cooperage to work as a plant for all distilleries on the island.
