Vitasoy USA, One Of Ayer’s Largest

CompaniesDid you know that one of

the largest manufacturers of soy food products in the world is located right here in Ayer, Massachusetts?

Vitasoy USA, Inc. a global pioneer and leader in soy foods and tofu production operates the facility at Ayer’s New England Way Industrial area, directly between the Groton, Littleton, Ayer town lines.

Since 1998, the Vitasoy and Nasoya brands corporate world-wide headquarters has continued to pioneer and produce organic and all-natural food products “that promote the health of fami-lies as well as the planet”.

As one of the Ayer’s leading manufacturers, Vitasoy contin-ues to see its production volume grow, therefore creating a con-tinuous need for new employees. Do you currently travel a long time or distance to work, did you know there could be better work-ing opportunities right in your “own backyard”?

Annemarie Abdo, Human Resource Director of Vitasoy, says there are currently 165 asso-ciates supporting the manufac-turing of Vitasoy products at the Ayer plant. But as demand con-tinues to increase, there is oppor-tunity for not only the promotion of current employees but also for new employees to become part of the Vitasoy/Nasoya family. Imagine working for a “orga-nization” that is “setting new standards of food quality and innovation all over the world?

If you have interested in learn-ing more information about the

Vitasoy Company and especially their employee opportunities and programs please call Ms. Annemarie Abdo at 978-487-3849 for more information.

Costume Party Fundraiser

In the theater, costumes are a part of every production. It’s assumed. It’s part of the job. It’s expected... unless you’re not in a show. Then, dressing up is just for FUN, such as for ArtsNashoba’s Arts Hallows Eve Costume Party being held October 23, 2015 from 5:30pm to midnight at the Devens Common

Center on Andrews Parkway in Devens! Tickets are just $50 adults; $25 children 5-10; $5 children under 5. Group rates also available, and all proceeds go towards ArtsNashoba’s per-forming and visual arts program-ming for kids 8-18. To make reservations or for more informa-tion, call 978/842-1255, email [email protected] or visit www.artsnashoba.org

“Fundraisers are a crucial

necessity for us if we are to con-tinue offering artistic programs to kids in our Region,” says ArtsNashoba President Bonnie Marchesani, “With everything we offer, whether it’s theatri-cal, musical, on a canvas, or from a camera, kids grow and learn about art - but moreso about themselves! The Arts bring a strong sense of pride and accomplishment to kids. It’s a confidence and spirit that helps make them smarter, more creative and appreciative of the beauty that’s in and around them. Unfortunately, with every project we take on, costs are incurred, so it’s a difficult balance for us to be able to offer as much as we want to. This fundraiser is a great opportunity to welcome and thank our community with a bit of frivolity and fun!”

There’s no mystery here... there will be things magical and musical; some tricks and LOTS of treats for guests including live entertainment from regional youth, dancing, games and an amazing buffet dinner and cash bar courtesy of the SpringHill Suites by Marriott! Special guest of the night will be magician C.J. Diamond, known for his extend-ed engagements at Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, TN, Silver Dollar City Theme Park in Branson, MO, and Mutton Hollow Theme Park in Branson, MO. C.J. also spent 7 years performing in and around Las Vegas, NV and 3 years perform-ing in and around the Waikiki Area of Honolulu, HI. Since moving to the Boston Area, C.J. has been featured regionally at such events as Grotonfest and the Ayer Yuletide Celebration.

And that’s not all! For your

leisurely viewing pleasure, ArtsNashoba will also be simul-taneously presenting a fantasti-cal exhibit of artwork by art-ists from the Nashoba Valley Region throughout the evening. And there’s MORE! There will be silent and live auction items available to review and bid on ranging from gift certificates, dinners at local eateries, theater tickets, overnight stays, party packages and original pieces of artwork by local artists partici-pating in the night’s exhibit! How can this possibly get any better? All proceeds from this event will go to ArtsNashoba’s youth pro-gramming - 100%!!

Stamp Collecting Month

To encourage young people to begin the life-long hobby of stamp collecting, also known as philately, the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston is giv-ing free admission to all young-sters throughout the month of October.

This offer is part of the

Museum’s celebration of National Stamp Collecting Month.

Free packets of stamps plus various stamp collecting mate-rials and an instruction book-let await all future collectors. In addition, stamp games and hunts in the Museum’s galleries will help introduce all visitors to the wide world of stamps. Current exhibits include selections from members’ collections, comics on stamps, mail carried by zepel-

lines, a history of rural free deliv-ery, a celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and even a dress made out of a stamp.

In addition a free book-let featuring famous Hispanic Americans on US stamps will also be available.

The celebration of the month also includes a members dinner on October with guest speak-er Dr. Joseph Adelman from Framingham State and author of several books on postal history. The public is invited.

The Museum also offers (for a small fee) evaluations of personal stamp collections by appoint-ment.

A Family Day is scheduled for

Halloween afternoon, October 31, from noon to 4:00.

Teachers who wish to bring their students to the Museum or have a program presented at their school will receive a discount of the fee if they register this month for visits anytime in the school year.

Coming in November is an exhibit on the history of the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, a free comic book evalu-ation and a visit from Amelia Earhart (Nov. 11 at 11:00).

More information about the Museum can be obtained by sending to [email protected] or calling 617-784-5838.

Story Of Civil War Regiment

Did you know that an infantry regiment of about 1,000 men trained at what was once called Groton Junction, now Ayer, and fought in the Civil War with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.

Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local com-munities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster,

Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.

Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extend-ed only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil

War battle in Virginia, was also located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.

Hear the saga of the 53rd, including the trials and tribula-tions of travel by train and steam-boats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.

Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade stationed at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.

The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the

third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair acces-sible. This event is free and open to the public and light refresh-ments will be served. For more information please contact the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or [email protected].

Fort Devens MuseumAre you ready for two days

in Venice and two weeks in Northern Italy and Slovenia? Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms” is the geographic setting for this proposed trip during May 11-25, 2016. We intend to visit many World War I interesting and scenic sites such as Venice, Cortina, Asolo, Caporetto Slovenia, and enjoy the best of cuisines and wines of the Friuli and Veneto areas.

Ellie Buford, a former Harvard resident now living in the area to be visited, is an expe-rienced traveler and will be the tour director. Viaggi Unlimited Travel in Aviano, Italy, will handle all travel arrangements. Local guides will accompany the twenty-two travelers to the vari-ous sites, museums, and monu-ments.

Camp Devens was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I, and two infantry divisions and many smaller units trained here en route to overseas locations. For people in Europe, World War I began earlier in 1914. Europe has already started commemorat-ing the centennial of that Great War. While the soldiers who

trained at Camp Devens fought on the Western Front in France, this trip offers the opportunity to view Italy’s enduring landscape further east and to recognize the sacrifices and challenges in war during the era.

A $100 donation to the Fort Devens Museum must be made no later than November 1, 2015, to be one of the twenty-two trav-elers. For additional informa-tion, itinerary, and price please contact Kara Fossey at the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or email [email protected]; or contact Duane Barber at 978-456-8847 or email [email protected].

FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES TAILOR-MADE FOR AUTUMN

Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time out-doors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall.

• Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.

• Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relax-ing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises.

• Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.

painful, invasive and expensive surgery. Research shows that physical therapy, combined with comprehensive medical manage-ment, can be just as effective as surgery when it comes to reliev-ing such conditions as osteoar-thritis of the knee.

What’s more, falls among the elderly are prevalent, dangerous, and can diminish their ability to lead an active and independent life. According to the National Council on Aging, about one in three people over 65 will fall at least once this year, perhaps with disastrous consequences. A physical therapist can design an individualized program of exercises and activities with an emphasis on strength, flexibility and proper gait.

Despite all the advantages of physical therapy, some people are not getting all they should and that their doctors have prescribed because of high co-payments. These have caused many patients to face a sad dilemma: health care vs. making ends meet.

When co-payment plans were first introduced, it was thought they’d lower medical costs by decreasing unnecessary care. Empirical evidence, however, shows that high co-payments

can actually increase health care costs.

According to research pub-lished in The New England Journal of Medicine, high co-payments led to patients skipping ambulatory care. This increased health care costs because the patients then needed more acute care, such as at a hospital, later on. The study concluded that “raising cost sharing for ambu-latory care may have adverse

health consequences and may increase total spending on health care.”

“When you have patients, who are in pain and recovering from injuries, avoiding medically nec-essary care because they can’t afford the high co-payments, you know there is a problem,” said Matthew R. Hyland, PT, Ph.D., MPA, CSCS, President of the New York Physical Therapy Association.

High co-payments, it appears, add to health care expense and make it hard for patients to get the treatment they need to stay healthy. Many Americans are going to www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to ask their leg-islators what can be done.

Simple Solutions For Leftovers

Sandwiches are a quick and easy way to combine the delicious flavors of the holidays without a lot of work. To make them even more delectable, try putting your post-holiday sandwiches on King’s Hawaiian breads and rolls.

For more than 50 years, families have relied on King’s Hawaiian breads and rolls to both complement their holiday dinners and to trans-form their leftovers into delectable dishes. Authentically Hawaiian and with just the right amount of sweet-ness, this bread can make any meal irresistibly delicious.

Join A Gentle Or Introductory Yoga Class At Emerson

Hospital If you’re not already on

the Yoga bandwagon yet,

EMERSON HOSPITAL is

bringing another offering of both

its popular “Gentle Yoga” class

as well as “Introduction to Yoga”

for the fall.

Come discover why doctors,

who are recognizing the many

benefits of a yoga practice, are

sending their patients to these

classes, which are ideal for new

yoga students and for those with

a tight body, stiffness, injury or

recovering from illness or sur-

gery – or simply in need of some

deep relaxation. It’s also helpful

for anyone with osteoarthritis,

osteopenia, and menopausal sys-

tems. And of course, it’s great if

you’re simply looking for a way

to release stress and relax your

body and mind.

There is new research which

shows that we can achieve a

healing state through simple

moves and stretches, breath

work, grounding, body scanning

and visualizations. Both classes

are deeply relaxing, improve

sleep and reduce stress-related

symptoms. Essentially, worries,

pressures and fears have made

it difficult for us to turn off the

stress switch; a yoga practice

retrains our nervous system to

know how to relax and bring us

into a state of self-healing and

vibrant good health.

The Gentle Yoga class is for

anyone with a tight body, stiff-

ness, injury or recovering from

illness or surgery, as well as

someone who wants to ease into

practicing yoga. It includes yoga

breathing, and we learn a variety

of foundational postures: stand-

ing, seated and on the floor. The

instructor always offers modifi-

cations to every posture so there

is no way that you can’t receive

benefits. It’s all about YOU and

custom-fitting the yoga to YOUR

BODY. This is a very popular

class on Friday mornings, so you

should sign up right away!

The Introduction to Yoga class

covers all the basics so that your

yoga experience is comfortable,

beneficial, and therapeutic. With

clear and detailed instructions,

you will build strength, flex-

ibility, improve posture and bal-

ance, calm the mind, and enliven

and deepen the breath. Learn the

best way to sit, how to breathe,

and the correct alignments for

all postures and movements.

Suitable for most adults of any

age or physical condition, and

even those with physical limita-

tions can benefit.

The Gentle Yoga class is

offered Friday mornings from

9:30 to 10:45 beginning October

23 through December 4. The

Introduction to Yoga class will

meet on Friday mornings from 11

to 12:15, also beginning October

23 through December 4. Please

note that the classes are held

at the beautiful yoga studio at

the Emerson Hospital Integrative

Health and Wellness Center, 310

Baker Road, Concord, MA (not

at the hospital). Also note that

because of the cumulative nature

of the class, the instructor is not

allowing drop-ins. You can reg-

ister on-line by going to emer-

sonhealthyliving.org and plug in

“Gentle Yoga” or “Introduction

to Yoga”. Since these are very

popular classes, we suggest you

sign up early.

Stay Safe After Severe Storms

(NAPSI)—Even after a storm

has passed, there are still some

things to watch out for. For

example, electrical dangers may

still pose a risk throughout the

community and even in your

home.

You and your family should

beware of electrical dangers

associated with downed power

lines and electrical wiring

or appliances that have been

exposed to water as a result of

severe storms.

How to Protect Yourself

Downed power lines are

extremely dangerous. You can-

not tell whether a power line is

energized just by looking at it.

That means you should assume

that all downed power lines are

live.

If you see a downed power

line, move away from it and

anything touching it. The ground

around power lines—up to 35

feet away—may be energized.

Shuffle away taking small steps,

keeping your feet together and

on the ground at all times. This

will minimize the potential for a

strong electric shock.

Never attempt to drive over

or move a downed power line;

instead, report it to authorities.

If someone is in contact with

a downed power line, call 911

immediately but do not touch or

approach the person so as not to

put yourself at risk of injury.

“After a storm, it’s important

that you don’t turn on or plug

in appliances until an electri-

cian has inspected all electri-

cal appliances that have gotten

wet,” advise the experts at the

Electrical Safety Foundation

International (ESFI).

If your home flooded and

water rose above the electri-

cal outlets, contact a licensed

electrician before turning on the

main circuit breaker. Electrical

equipment exposed to water can

be extremely dangerous if re-

energized without proper recon-

ditioning or replacement.

Keep in mind, battery-pow-

ered lighting is the safest and

easiest power source when water

is around.

ty information associated with
