Dear Motor Medics,My transmission failed while on vacation. The failures not the

end of the world, I understand things break but most of the vaca-tion was spent dealing with the truck. I use it to pull my camper and boat together and when it stopped so did the vacation. This 2008 ¾ ton GMC truck has 90,000 miles and I never changed the transmission fl uid because when I bought it they said it’s good to 100,000 miles. Is there anything I should’ve done to prevent the failure? They told me I needed a rebuild because it was burnt up.

Dear Terry, First, what is the recommended tow rating for the truck?

Compare this to what you are towing and if you are exceeding it get a bigger truck or less of a load. Make sure you take into account your fully loaded setup with all fl uids and your family included at the time you weigh it. Tow ratings should also not be at 100%, more like 80% to allow for headwinds and such. Over pulling is a number one failure cause but you can still have transmission failures even without towing. We recom-mend changing the fl uid when towing every 30,000 miles or so and observing the condition of the fl uid between changes. The fl uid in this truck is meant for extended life but some cir-cumstances will reduce that life. Also be sure the transmission cooler is the proper size.

Dear Motor Medics,I’m having starting issues with my 1991 Chevy full size truck. I

have a 350 engine that was just rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago. When we performed the rebuild we also replaced the battery, al-ternator and battery cables. The starter was replaced about fi ve years ago so we opted not to replace it at the same time. When the vehicle has been running for a couple hours and is shut off it will crank very slow and sometimes not start at all unless you let it sit until the engine cools off. The problem seems to be worse if I have driven it harder such as towing or highway use. What do you think is wrong and how can I fi x it?

Dear Ray, It sounds like you have a starter that has failed. The fi rst

step is to verify there are no problems with your cables or battery by performing voltage drop checks on the cables and a capacitance test on the battery even though they are new. Once you know they are all good then check the current draw of the starter both hot and cold. If it is pulling too much cur-rent when hot you may have either bad bearings in the starter or a bad armature. Did you install headers when you did the rebuild? If so, there may be too much heat reaching the starter and it may need to be shielded.


Dear Motor Medics,I have a 2019 Buick Enclave that has been parked for over

four months without being started. Due to circumstances I stopped driving the car for a while and it may sit for another few months. I am concerned about the vehicle’s health. Do I have to worry about anything specifi c? The battery is dead

and nothing inside will light up at all. I have been told I will need to have it towed to the dealership and they will have to change the gas because its old and that I will need a new battery and possibly some of the fl uids changed. I listen to your radio show and trust your advice.

Dear Carter,We do not know who is giving you that advice, but we are

glad you trust us and have asked us for advice because we are going to save you some cash. If this car were going to sit for more than a year it could have some bigger issues but sitting six months or so is not going to make much an impact on the car. To avoid a dead battery, we would suggest that next time and even now as you wait to drive again that you install a battery maintainer on the car and leave it connected when not in use. Gasoline should not go bad that fast and the other fl uids other than an oil change should not be needed either.


Dear Motor Medics,Should I use fuel that contains ethanol or not? I live in Min-

nesota and have as many friends with strong feelings for it as I do against it. The ones for it say its good for my engine and the air and its renewable and increases octane. The ones against it just say its bad for my car and that they never use it. I mostly use the 88 at the pump because I do not know what to do and have been using it for a long time without any issues.

Dear Brad, If you have had no issues using the 88, here is some

news. 88 contains ethanol. If you have used 88 for some time, then you know how it performs in your vehicle with a slightly higher-octane rating than some of the fuel labeled 10 percent ethanol. Almost every gallon of fuel in the U.S. Has ethanol in it. e15 is approved for use in motor vehicles 2001 model year and newer and is sold under the 88 label and other pumps labeled e15. You must de-cide for yourself but in our own shop of over 30 years we

have never seen any damage caused by it when used properly. Any fuel can be an issue if misused such

as putting diesel in a gas car. Ask your friends for details about why they do not like it. Sometimes choices are based on opinions not facts.
