HOBSON MANS STRONG-SIDE: Third-year LB Victor Hobson, the Jetssecond round draft pick in 2003, has been a defensive stalwart for the Jets thisseason. The 6-0, 252-pound native of Mt. Laurel, NJ nearly scored his firstcareer TD on Sunday at Baltimore when he scooped up a Jamal Lewis that hadbeen forced by starting CB David Barretts well-timed hit. Hobson grabbed the

loose ball and rumbled 43-yards to the Baltimore one before TE Todd Heapsdesperation tackle ended Hobsons bid for the score. Hobson finished third onthe team in tackles with 10 stops on Sunday and now has 21 tackles this seasonalong with one pressure and the fumble recovery. For his career, Hobson hasplayed in 32 regular season games, making 16 starts, and has 125 tackles, twosacks, two interceptions for 28 yards, three passes defensed, a forced andrecovered fumble.

allowed only 259 yards of total offense to the Ravens and limited them to 2.6yards per rushing play.

Abes Impact: WE/LB John Abraham had his streak of three consecutivegames with a sack snapped on Sunday, yet the former South CarolinaGamecock was all over the field, harassing Ravens running backs and puttingpressure numerous times on QB Anthony Wright. Ravens Take 3-0 Lead: The Ravens Matt Stover connected on a 42-yard fieldgoal with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter, ending a 10-play, 32-yard drive in4:50 in time of possession.

Baltimore Extends Lead with Second Field Goal: Stover hit a 25-yard fieldgoal with 3:47 left in the second quarter, ending a nine-play, 65 yard drive in

5:33. The field goal gave the Ravens a 6-0 lead.

Barrett FF & Hobson FR: CBDavid Barrettstripped Jamal Lewis following aone-yard run, strong-side LB Victor Hobson alertly scooped up the ball andreturned it 43-yards to the Baltimore 1. The Jets, however, lost two-yards on thedrive and settled for a Mike Nugent 21-yard field goal, cutting the Ravens lead to6-3. It was Barretts second forced fumble in as many weeks, having strippedJacksonville wide receiver Reggie Williams of the ball last week and the forcedfumble this week. It also marked the third turnover caused by Barrett in the lastthree games, as he intercepted a Gus Frerotte in the Jets game two win againstthe Miami Dolphins.

Ravens Up Lead; Register Final Points of the Game: The Ravens extendedtheir lead to 13-3 with a Jamal Lewis one-yard TD run with 3:12 left in the thirdquarter, ending a 12-play, 71 yard drive in 8:05.

Coleman Interception Rounds Out Secondary Sweep: FS Erik Colemanintercepted an Anthony Wright deep pass in the Jets end zone intended for WRClarence Moore in the fourth quarter. Despite playing with a surgically repairedbroken thumb, Coleman positioned himself perfectly on the pass. In doing so, he

joined fellow starting secondary membersTy Law, David Barrett and KerryRhodeswith an interception thus far this season. Last season Coleman had ateam-high four interceptions.

Brown Steps In: Third-year linebackerMark Brownstepped in and replaced aninjuredEric Bartonat the jack linebacker spot and responded with 12 tackles, the second most on the team. The former rookie free agent from Auburn hasplayed every linebacking spot for the Jets the last three seasons, having steppedin and replaced an injuredVictor Hobsonfor six games last season. Browns 12tackles on Sunday were a career-high, and matched his tackle output from theentire 2004 season.

DID YOU KNOW? The last time Curtis Martin lost a fumble to the opposingteam was on November 2, 2003 vs. the Giants in the second quarter. Martin hastouched the ball 724 times (652 rushes and 72 receptions) since his last lostfumble that was recovered by an opponent during the regular season. In game

two, Martin was stopped on a fourth-and-goal in the second quarter againstMiami. On the play, Martin fumbled and the ball was recovered in the end zoneby Jerald Sowell. However, it was not ruled a touchdown as the only person whocould recover the ball for the Jets would have been Martin. Thus, he was creditedwith one rush for zero yards and the Jets turned the ball over on downs, thus in atwist, Martin was not officially credited with a fumble, keeping his streak intact.

GAME FOUR: NEW YORK JETS 3 AT BALTIMORE RAVENS 13

BALTIMORE, MD. (Oct. 2, 2005) The Jets droppedtheir second straight game of the season when theywere defeated by the home Ravens, 13-3 in front of the

    second-largest crowd in Ravens history.

Jamal Lewis scored on a 1-yard run, Matt Stover kickedtwo field goals, and Baltimore sacked Brooks Bollingerfive times in a 13-3 victory.

Baltimore (1-2) held Curtis Martin to 30 yards on 13carries, and New York (1-3) made only six first downsand had 90 yards in offense through the first 56 minutes.

Playing in his second NFL game, first as a starter,Bollinger went 14-for-28 for 149 yards in place of injuredstarter Chad Pennington, who's out for the season with atorn right rotator cuff. Backup Jay Fiedler also is out witha shoulder injury.

"It's frustrating. I can't really put it into words. It's tough,"Bollinger said. "I want to do well for these guys. I finallygot an opportunity where I knew they were counting onme; it was my time to make a contribution. And I didn'tdo enough for us to win today."

The Ravens didn't generate much offense either, butJamal Lewis, ran for a season-high 81 yards on 29carries and scored his first touchdown of the season.

David Barrett caused Lewis to fumble, and VictorHobson took the ball 43 yards to the Baltimore 1, but tworuns by Martin and a sweep by Bollinger lost 2 yards,

forcing Edwards to summon Mike Nugent to kick a 21-yard field goal.

"That's one of the most disappointing things of the day,"Bollinger said. "The (bootleg) we ran down there, Ishould have thrown that away. We ended up losing acouple of yards on it."

The Ravens followed the Jets' score with a 13-play, 71-yard drive that made it 13-3 late in the third quarter.Although Lewis handled the majority of the work, Wrightcompleted an 11-yard pass to Derrick Mason and a 24-yarder to Todd Heap to set up a touchdown run byJamal Lewis.

The Ravens used two field goals by Stover to take a 6-0lead in a lackluster first half.

Stover kicked a 42-yard field goal on Baltimore's secondpossession, giving the Ravens their first lead of theseason.

Leftwich finished 16-of-23 for 177 yards with onetouchdown and one interception despite battling througha groin injury. Fred Taylor had a career-high 37 carriesfor 98 yards and a touchdown. Pennington finished 9-of-19 for 76 yards and twointerceptions, and coach Herm Edwards said Bollingermight have to start next week at Baltimore. Penningtonsaid he felt the same amount of pain as when he initiallyhurt his shoulder last year.

Curtis Martin finished with 67 yards on 18 carries. TheJets had 168 yards of offense, and Jacksonville held theball for nearly 15 more minutes.

Despite those numbers, the Jets had a chance to win inthe end. Mike Nugent kicked a 25-yard field goal to sendthe game into overtime. The kick came after an officialsreview overturned a called touchdown it was ruledWayne Chrebet bobbled the 7-yard pass fromPennington.

GAME TWO: NEW YORK JETS 17 VS. MIAMI DOLPHINS 7

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Sept. 18, 2005) -- Early inthe fourth quarter Sunday, with the game on the line,Jets coach Herm Edwards walked up to his franchisequarterback on the sideline.

Edwards told Chad Pennington, "We have to score."

The Miami Dolphins had just closed the gap to 10-7 andthe defense needed a breather. Pennington promptlywent out and led a beautiful drive, making up for hisstruggles early on, and helped seal a 17-7 victory overthe Dolphins with a 1-yard score to Jerald Sowell.

On the drive, Pennington went 7 of 7 for 74 yards. Hefinished 19 of 30 for 190 yards, with two touchdowns andno interceptions.

"We talk about our football team complementing eachother," Pennington said. "The Dolphins put a good drivetogether, and on offense we needed to step up and put

some points on the board. That's what we did."

He gave them their keys to victory: protecting thefootball, establishing the run, stopping the run, andlimiting penalties. The Jets did all of those with successagainst Miami (1-1), which returned to form following asurprising win over Denver last week.

New York had no turnovers, ran for 98 yards, held Miamito 66 on the ground, and committed five penalties for 40yards.

"I didn't think blue collar necessarily meant ugly," Jetsguard Pete Kendall said.

    Edwards hardly cared.

"They realized what type of football team we are,"Edwards said. "We have to do the little things well. Itdoesn't look pretty all the time -- pretty doesn't win."

"He got hot and he made some good throws," Dolphinssafety Lance Schulters said of Pennington. "He lookedfine to me."

The Jets harassed Frerotte throughout the game, finishing 20 of 43 for 177 yards with a touchdown and aninterception. The Dolphins also failed to muster much ofa running attack. Rookie Ronnie Brown, who came intothe game with a slight shoulder injury, had 35 yards on12 carries.

GAME ONE: NEW YORK JETS 7 AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 27

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs' revamped defense -- theproduct of a busy, wheeling-and-dealing off-season proved tobe the story of the day in the Chiefs home-opening 27-7 win

over the visting New York Jets.

The Jets were mistake-prone throughout the game, highlyuncharacteristic of the teams Herm Edwards has fieldedthroughout his head coaching career. The Jets committedthree turnovers (two lost fumbles and an interception) andwere penalized eight times for 80 yards.

Kansas City, playing in front of an enthusiastic full house, started fast on offense, -- Larry Johnson rushed for 110 yardsand two touchdowns on nine carries and Priest Holmes added85 yards and a touchdown.

Spurred on by newcomers like Sammy Knight, Patrick Surtainand Derrick Johnson, the new-look defense forced sevenfumbles and recovered two. Chad Pennington was sacked

three times and intercepted once.Curtis Martin was held to 57 yards on 20 carries -- 139 fewerthan he had in last year's season opener against Cincinnati enroute to the NFL rushing title.

Jay Fiedler enabled the Jets to avoid their first shutout sinceDec. 24, 1995, when he hit Chris Baker on a 23-yardtouchdown pass with 29 seconds to go.

"I wish we could have made more of a game of it, but it wasn't,"said Jets coach Herm Edwards. "They took us behind thewoodshed and whupped us."

On their first three possessions, the Chiefs had touchdowndrives of 75 and 95 yards and a 41-yard field goal. Holmes hada 35-yard run on the first drive, then Johnson, who ischallenging him for playing time, finished it off with a 35-yarddash into the end zone.

Pennington, coming off shoulder surgery, also had severalpasses dropped, including one that might have gone for atouchdown in the second half.

"The opportunity was there to get the momentum going in ourfavor, and I pretty much let the team down," Coles said. "I justhave to go back to work this week and try to make up for it."

The Jets were hurt by more kicking woes, bringing back badmemories of the two missed field goals in a three-point loss toPittsburgh in last year's playoffs. Nugent, drafted in the secondround out of Ohio State, slipped while attempting a 28-yardfield goal and Hicks blocked the low-trajectory ball.

Trent Green, who underwent vascular surgery on his left leg onAug. 30, connected on his first eight passes, but wound up just15-for-26 for 200 yards. Pennington was 21-for-34 for 264yards.

Holmes scored on a 3-yard run on the Chiefs' secondpossession, a 95-yard drive on which Green completed all sixof his passes for 87 yards. Lawrence Tynes added field goalsof 41 and 38 yards for the Chiefs, both coming after Jetsfumbles.

EDWARDS PAVES THE WAY: Edwards, with the Jets playoff appearancein the 2004 season, has accomplished the following feats:

Became the first head coach in team annals to guide the team to theplayoffs in his first season coaching the team (2001).

The first coach in team history to take the team to the playoffs inconsecutive seasons (2001-02) to begin a tenure with the Club.

The first coach in team history to lead the team to the playoffs in three-of-four seasons.

The first coach in team history to advance the team to the secondround of the playoffs in two-out-of-three seasons (2002 & 2004).

The first coach to lead the Jets to three different playoff appearances(2001, 2002 & 2004).

of reaching the post-season. Edwards has shown a willingness to rely on youngplayers, often thrusting them into pivotal and critical roles, not shying away fromthe fact that their experience may hinder their playing abilities, and insteadtrusting in the players and standing by them.

Following his rookie season as head coach and once again after the difficult

2003 season, Edwards was rewarded by Jets Chairman & CEO WoodyJohnson, President Jay Cross and General Manager Terry Bradway with acontract extension, thus extending his contract through the 2007 season.

    CAREER WITH JETS

New York Jets Head Coach Herm Edwards, who is now in his fifth seasonleading the Green and White, has swiftly stamped an indelible and impressivemark in the history of Jets football. As the head coach of the Jets, Edwards hasguided the Club to a 36-32 record in the regular season and a 2-3 mark in thepostseason, including two AFC Divisional Playoff appearances (2002 & 2004).Edwards

Edwards 36 regular season victories are the fourth-most wins by a head coachin Club history, trailing only the late Weeb Ewbank, a member of the Pro Football

Hall of Fame, (71, 1963-73), Joe Walton (53, 1983-89) and Walt Michaels (39,1977-82). The Jets thrilling 20-17 overtime victory at San Diego on January 8,2005, marked the first postseason win on the road for the Jets since January 15,1983, when the Jets defeated the Los Angeles Raiders in the venerable L.A.Coliseum, 17-14. Edwards earned his first division title with the Jets in 2002,helping to rally the team from a 2-5 start to the AFC East crown in the ultra-competitive division. The AFC East title marked the Clubs second division titlesince the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 and the Jets back-to-back playoffappearances were the first for the organization since the 1985-86 seasons.

Edwards, who ranks amongst the NFLs bright, young, innovative head coaches, began his head coaching career by posting a 10-6 record in 2001 and earning anAFC Wild Card berth at Oakland. The following season (2002) Edwards broughtthe Jets back from a 2-5 start and ignited the team by inserting promising youngsignal-caller Chad Pennington, a quarter of the way through the season. Gunningthe Jets engines through the stretch run and capturing the division with a 9-7mark, the Jets showed their battled-tested resolve with a 41-0 AFC Wild Cardvictory over the Indianapolis Colts at The Meadowlands, the Jets first everpostseason shutout. In 2003, Edwards and the Jets were unable to overcome apreseason hand injury to Pennington that sidelined the energetic QB for nearly

the first half of the season and the Jets fell to 6-10, Edwards only losing seasonin his head coaching tenure. Displaying the resiliency and resolve that Edwardshas had throughout his life, the Jets stormed back in 2004 with a 10-6 mark, anAFC Wild Card win at San Diego in the playoffs before falling in a heart-wrenching overtime game against the AFCs top-seeded Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-17, in an AFC Divisional Playoff tilt on the road.

    2005 SEASON

The Jets got off to a shaky start, playing uncharacteristically on opening day atKansas City, with penalties and turnovers and lost 27-7. Edwards, however, stayed firmly behind his team and stressed the importance of getting back to the

blue-collar principles that he has built the team around and the Jets respondedby winning their first division game of the season and their home opener, 17-7against the Miami Dolphins. The Jets then dropped a gut-wrenching 26-20overtime game to the Jacksonville Jaguars as the team lost the services ofseveral key performers for portions of the game, including Chad Pennington, JayFiedler, Jason Fabini and Eric Barton to assorted injuries. The Club, down twoquarterbacks (Pennington & Fiedler) for an undisclosed amount of time, turned tothird-year former sixth round draft choice Brooks Bollinger for game four atBaltimore. The Jets dropped a low scoring affair, 13-3, in game four at Baltimorein week four.

    2004 SEASON (JETS)

Edwards piloted the Jets to a 10-6 start, becoming just the third head coach infranchise history to lead his team to double-digit wins in different seasons withthe Jets. Immediately after the 2003 season, Edwards pointed to the Jets

penchant for breaking slowly out of the gateand vowed to prepare the team to get off to aquick start, which resulted in the Clubs bestever start, 5-0. Edwards, perhaps one of the

finest coaches in the NFL in adverse situations, helped the Jets rally from a two-game slide and the loss of Chad Pennington in early November with two big roadwins in a row, thus closing out the month of November 3-2. The team was 2-2 inthe month of December and posted an impressive 6-2 home record in 2004.Edwards team maintained its highly-disciplined style of play, combining a

pounding rushing game, featuring the NFLs leading rusher in 04 in Curtis Martin(1,697), and a passing attack that was without starting QB Chad Pennington forthree games through the middle portion of the season.

The Jets defense showed a marked improvement from the previous season, andsurrendered an average of only 16.3 ppg, the third-lowest average of pointsallowed in the teams 45-year history, bested only by the mark in 1993 (15.4) and1985 (15.9). The Jets defense limited opposing offenses to a 38.0 percentconversion success on third downs and surrendered more than 20 points in agame only five times throughout the season (weeks one, two, 10, 16 and 17).

    2003 SEASON (JETS)

The Jets 2003 season got off to a rocky start in the third preseason contestagainst the New York Giants when QB Chad Pennington suffered a fracturedhand that required immediate surgery and shelved him for nearly half of theseason. The Jets fell into a hole and finished with a 6-10 record. Edwards, though, responded by keeping the Jets competitive through the entire season, with key wins at Oakland in overtime (11/2/03), a thrilling comeback win over theJaguars (11/23/03) and an emotional Monday Night home game against theTennessee Titans, 24-17, as well as a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6-0, ina driving snowstorm (12/14/03) at The Meadowlands, the Jets first win againstthe Steelers since 1988. Edwards, following the season, vowed that he wouldincrease measures to insure the team got off to a quicker start the following

season and also took measures to improve the Jets defensive style and broughtin aggressive first-year defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson from theBaltimore Ravens.

    2002 SEASON (JETS)

Edwards was one of just two AFC coaches to take his Club to back-to-backplayoff appearances in 2001 and 2002, joining Pittsburghs Bill Cowher (theOakland Raiders also accomplished the feat, in 2001 under Jon Gruden and in2002 under Bill Callahan). As the head coach, Edwards guided the Jets to thebest regular-season road record in his first two seasons (11-5).

The always quotable and insightful Edwards and his now-famous mantra, YouPlay to Win The Game, was one of the most lasting memories of the 2002 NFLseason and became the Jets rallying cry for their remarkable second half of theseason comeback, turning a tumultuous 2-5 start into a stretch where the Jetscaptured seven of their last nine games, earning the division title.

The Jets 2002 AFC East title was a product of the team winning eight of the last10 regular season games, seven of the last nine, three of the last four and four ina row at home. In addition, the Jets 41-0 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts

in the postseason was the first playoff shutout in Club history and marked thesecond most points scored in a shutout win in NFL annals, while the 41 pointsscored were the second-most in team history in a playoff game.

    2001 SEASON (JETS)

In Edwards first season with the Jets (2001) he oversaw the implementation ofnew offensive, defensive and special teams philosophies. Edwards kept aforceful hand on the controls and guided the Jets to their first playoff appearancesince 1998. Edwards was the only coach out of six newcomers in their first yearwith their respective teams in 2001 to earn a playoff spot. Besides his 10-winseason, perhaps the most indicative statistic supporting the effectiveness anddiligence of Edwards coaching style was the discipline the team displayed, garnering an NFL-low 63 penalties for a league-low 507 yards.

The Jets set a franchise mark for most road wins in a season, 7-1, which toppedtheir 5-2 record in 1968. Additionally, the Green and Whites 7-1 road record tiedthem with Philadelphia for the second-most wins in 2001 (STL, 8-0).

Edwards 2001 Jets led the NFL in turnover differential with a +18, a margin ofone over their closest rival, Edwards former club, Tampa Bay, who finished witha +17 ratio. The Jets produced the second-most take-aways (39) in the AFC andtied with the Bucs for second most in the NFL behind Clevelands 42. The Jetsalso proved to be frugal in turning the ball over, relinquishing it just 21 times allseason, tied for the fewest in the AFC with Seattle and Pittsburgh and trailed onlySan Franciscos 19 in the NFL.

Edwards received numerous accolades throughout his rookie coaching campaignfor his willingness and cooperation with the media. He was awarded the StaplesNFL Coach of the Week Award following the Jets 21-17 comeback win over the

Miami Dolphins on October 14, 2001.TAMPA BAY (1996-2000)

The former NFL standout defensive back earned the reputation as an excellentcommunicator and one of the best teachers during his time spent as assistanthead coach/defensive backfield coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-2000). At Tampa, he worked closely with current Indianapolis Colts and formerBucs head coach Tony Dungy in the day-to-day administrative dealingsassociated with the head coachs role.

While with the Bucs, Edwards helped the secondary become one of the NFL'sconsistently top-ranked units. In 2000, CB Donnie Abraham (team-high 7 INT)

and FS John Lynch (3 INT) each earned Pro Bowl recognition. Collectively, thegroup recorded 25 interceptions, which tied for first in the NFC and third in theNFL while the Bucs' 41 take-aways tied for second in the NFC and fourth in theNFL. The Bucs defense also finished +17 in the plus/minus category, tops in theNFC and tied for third best in the NFL. The Bucs defense finished fourth in theNFC in total defense, allowing 300.0 yards per game (ninth in NFL). Under histutelage the Bucs finished in the top 10 in pass defense in four-of-the-five

seasons. Edwards had a major hand in overseeing the NFL's second-rankedpass defenses in both 1998 and 1999.

Under Edwards mentoring, Lynch earned three Pro Bowl berths (2000, 1999 and1998) and Abraham earned one (2000), marking the firstPro Bowl appearancesby a member of the Tampa Bay defensive backfield since Wayne Haddix in

1990. In 1999, Edwards' troops turned in a stellar effort in the playoffs, holdingthe second-ranked Washington Redskins passing attack to a mere 121 passingyards and the top-ranked St. Louis offense to just 258 yards through the air. His1998 group, despite battling through a rash of injuries and the integration ofyoung players, managed to surrender an average of just 172.6 yards per game, the Club's best single-season showing since 1982.

In 1997, the Bucs secondary completed its second consecutive stellarperformance under Edwards, finishing in the top 10 in pass defense.
