Southwest Virginia has some great food finds.

In January 2008, when I was stillpretty new to the food beat, I

asked readers to help me name 50great food finds in Southwest Vir-

ginia. The tummy-teasing collectionranged from Roanoke Bagel Com-pany bagels to extra-crispy buffalowings at Sharkeys in Blacksburg.

Four and a half years later, a lothas changed on the food scene inour corner of the state, so I thoughtit would be fun to update the list. This time, I asked blog readers, colleaguesand friends to help me come up with twiceas many gastronomic delights. Believe itor not, the challenge was not coming upwith 100 ideas; it was making the agonizing

decision to pare the list to the targetnumber.

That goes to show that even as thefood scene has changed immensely, with food prices skyrocketing andsome favorite restaurants closing,Southwest Virginia foodies still havea lot to love. This list, like the last one,is subjective. I have no doubt thereare culinary gems in our region thatdidnt make the cut or never came tomy attention.

If you note a glaring omission, Id loveto hear from you. Email me at [email protected], call me at 981-3343 orleave a comment at blogs.roanoke.com/fridgemagnet.
