Malaika has changed the way I dream – I used to have small ideas of what my life could be like, but now I want to travel the world
and experience everything. – Rose Muswamba, Grade 5A

Dearest supporters and friends,
It is with great joy that we celebrate 10 years of Malaika with you. I write this as I return from my latest visit to DR Congo with the
fresh memory of our 252 girls and their smiles. It fills me with pride to see our local staff in action, as they teach these future agents of change their wide array of subjects and as I see them excel.
Over the past decade, the Kalebuka community has shared in the celebration of each achieved milestone. Our team, with the help of people all around the world, has helped in bringing eight wells to the region, as well as reached our goal of powering our computer lab with renewable solar energy and inaugurated the school’s digital e-library, the first in the region, through which our girls can access resources on tablet devices. The following pages will take you over the past 10 years of empowerment.
The horizon looks promising and full of exciting developments for our girls, school and organization. This year and next will see the completion of this beautiful campus to fully accommodate K-12 classes.
As always, thank you for your continued support of this high quality program. None of it would be possible without your shared vision and commitment. Cheers to another decade of Malaika.
Much love,
NOELLA COURSARIS MUSUNKA

2017 marks ten years of Malaika’s dedication to building a world-class campus, implementing a holistic curriculum, and developing the right partnerships as a solution to major socio-economic challenges in the region. Together and with great pride, we have built an exemplary and solid foundation and we commit ourselves to many more
years of positive results. Our success would not be possible without the support of our funders, donors and in-kind supporters who through the years have created a web of resources that are empowering an entire community. These pages are not just a report, but a voyage through the last decade where we pay homage to our team, our supporters and our beneficiaries alike, who shape our mission and keep our focus through each challenge that arises.

OUR IMPACT
malaika.org
The Malaika School is a free, accredited school that provides a comprehensive and high quality education to girls in Kalebuka. In 2011 we welcomed our
inaugural Kindergarten and first grade students and have added an incoming class every year since. In Fall 2016 we welcomed our newest class, totaling a student body of 252 girls from grades K to 6.
As we proceed, we will add approximately 30 girls each year, whom we will educate until the end of secondary school. We will then strive to place them in internships with local companies and to secure scholarships for them to attend university. Our curriculum is structured around daily classes in French and English, on subjects including math, science, information technology, health and civic education. Great care is taken to cultivate the leadership potential of the students, from involvement in the Girl Scouts to field trips and community service projects such as planting trees or teaching the community about malaria prevention. Art, music, theater and
physical education are also a key part of the robust educational programming.
The Malaika School library was recently inaugurated by our Goodwill Ambassador, Eve. This e-library is the only one of its kind in Kalebuka. It has both print and e-books on donated Android tablets, giving the girls access to the broad world surrounding them. As of 2016, the Malaika School is 100% powered by solar energy.
In addition to providing a free education, another unique aspect of our School is that it provides two healthy meals a day. Research readily backs up the claim that children learn better with a balanced diet because they are able to focus in their classes and are more alert. All meals have been strategically planned with the help of a nutritionist to ensure a balanced diet that meets the needs of the girls at this crucial stage in their lives. They eat breakfast and lunch at the School and eagerly look forward to them as these are often the only meals they receive each day.
In 2013, Malaika partnered with FIFA to build the Kalebuka Foot-ball for Hope Center, a community
center that offers education, health and sports programs to approximately 7,000 youth and adults in the village. Offerings include classes and work-shops in a range of subjects, such as our Village Health Worker train-ings, Mothers First family planning program, and Drop Malaria program, which focuses on decreasing malar-ia through prevention and protection with awareness-raising activities and distribution of 9,000 bednets. The Cen-ter also offers literacy, sewing, math and computer classes, giving stu-dents access to the Internet. In 2017, the Center launched the Sustainable Pathways project, our premier voca-tional training program to teach out-of-school youth about conservation farming, entrepreneurship and enter-prise development.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: INFRASTRUCTURE
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: CROSS-SECTORIn rural Africa, women can spend
more than one hour on each trip to fetch water, an exhausting and
often dangerous chore that robs them of the chance to work and learn. Dirty water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene habits play a major role in child mortality. In order to combat these challenges, Malaika partnered with Voss Foundation to build seven wells, and with Vinmart Foundation to build an eighth one. Having access to clean water in the village has helped decrease the number of cases of chol-era, diarrhea and other illnesses. Our eight wells have a direct and beneficial impact on over 16,000 people a year.
Since its inception in 2007, Malaika has worked hard to meet needs the community has presented. A few of our initiatives include: New Beginnings, Malaika’s first and longest running project, is a sponsorship program which
supports a group of abandoned and orphaned girls in Lubumbashi. Malaika finances the girls’ school expenses and contributes to Maison Magone, the orphanage where they live.
Malaika partnered with One World Play Project to distribute 10,000 One World Futbols across the Katanga Province. These ultradurable footballs are being used at every opportunity by the happy youth.
Malaika partnered with Project C.U.R.E. to facilitate the shipment of 15 containers of donated medical equipment to the region’s hospitals, helping to bring down the mortality rate and improving outcomes for patients.

Education shaped Noella Coursaris Musunka’s life, and today the model-turned-philanthropist is paying it
forward by bringing education to young Congolese girls. Tidi Benbenisti gets to know Noella, and learns more
about her foundation, Malaika
PROFILE
A Skype video call away brings me closer to the beautiful Noella Coursaris Musunka, even though we are continents apart. She is living in England, ‘out in the countryside,’ she tells me, where winter has set in, and I am in an air-conditioned of ce in the midst of a Joburg heatwave. Born in Lubumbashi, in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the second-largest city after the capital of Kinshasa, her uncompromising belief that education transforms lives is the reason she began her non-governmental foundation, Malaika, in Kalebuka – a 40-minute drive away.
A natural beauty, with almond-shaped eyes, a perfectly symmetrical face, hair worn loosely just below her shoulders, she is tall, regal and soft spoken. Her strong demeanour is softened by her smile, and French accent. Dressed in an ivory-coloured

ADVOCACY
Fiercely proud of her African heritage, Noëlla’s determination to help improve the lives of Africa’s youth has made her
an international advocate.
The success of Malaika has enabled the mission to be known to a wider audience, especially with increased media coverage including television, magazines, and oth-er media news outlets. To encourage the international community’s interest and in-volvement in the DRC, she has facilitated organized visits for many influential people, including students from Columbia University, Khaliah Ali (daughter of Muhammad Ali), CNN and Russell Simmons’ foundation.
Noëlla also works tirelessly to encourage African youth to work for peace, gender equality and poverty reduction for their continent. With that goal in mind, she has helped organize and present at screenings of documentaries that reveal the horrific impact of war and rape. She has presented Malaika and the local DRC education system to the British Parliament’s International Development Committee.

A LOOK FORWARD: TOGETHER WE SHAPE THE FUTURE
Thank you for joining me along this ride, as we recapped ten years of impact. As we look ahead, I want to share an African saying that has always inspired my philanthropy. It says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” I
don’t know about you, but I want to go far. I see myself in 10 years celebrating a Malaika School that educates the minds and cares for the bodies of 1,000 young women. I want to tell you about a Congo that is more peaceful and more prosperous because we have sent young people out into the world who are equipped with the tools to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. I want to tell you about all of the Congolese people whose lives we have touched; individuals who have since authored their own destinies and sought out opportunities at home or abroad as leaders, caregivers, and agents of change. And I hope to celebrate many other people who have been inspired to give back to the DRC, just as I did. I truly believe all of this, and much more, is possible. Will you join me? Let’s go far together.
With much love,
NOELLA COURSARIS MUSUNKA
