10 year olds at our hope - palmer moravian...
TRANSCRIPT
Summer moves on and fall is around the corner and God is good all the time and all the time, God is
GOOD! Even as thunderstorms roll in, we can always look for the light. We rise each morning to a priceless
gift from the Lord – a sunrise and a new day to start fresh.
I was blessed and honored to serve at Primary church camp week with 9-10 year olds at our Hope
Conference and Renewal Center in July. I’ve been delighted to serve on church camp staffs since 1981! I join
20 plus others in preparing for Vacation Bible school as I write this page. For those coming 5 days we affirm
the good news that despite difficulties in life – God is good. God provides strength. God carries us in grace.
We confirm “No matter what – good, bad, not pretty – God is good. “The Lord’s steadfast love never ceases.
God’s mercies are fresh and new each morning. (Lamentations 3:22)” As challenges come, we are firmed up,
made fit, and learn anew to trust the Lord Who shines love and grace upon us.
Mission Camp was a real blessing as 13 young persons joined Kathy Sofie and 5 adult supporters in 5
days of service, kindness and care. As I greeted them each morning they were sometimes rubbing eyes,
moving a little slow and noting “not enough sleep.” But at the end of their vigorous mission filled morning –
they were energized, smiling and I noted their strong sense of life satisfaction.
As the days come and go and some parts of life change and challenges arrive, we can find ourselves
frustrated, stymied, even despairing. Let us in those moments shine light afresh on each other’s paths. We
each need a little light to open our eyes, stretch, smile, partner together and press on. Let us offer that –
daily – to each other and to all we meet.
Put your sunglasses on and face the Light. Look up. See the bright sun. Keep your fixed on the Son,
Jesus Christ, “The Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2) Christ followers are always moving
into new and uncharted territory. We are dawn people, Easter people, we are getting-on-with-our-future
persons. Fresh start – day one…. ready… Go!
In the journey of life with Christ & with you,
darrell

The Palmer Moravian Church Family extends our deepest sympathy to Pastor Darrell. His mother,
Dorothy G. (Luikart) Johnson, entered the more immediate presence of our Savior on Monday, July 22,
at the age of 101. A service celebrating Dorothy’s long and faithful life will be held in Ohio. Please
keep Darrell, his wife Christine, and the extended family in your prayers during this time of grief.
Moravian news brief:
The Rev. Christine Sobania Johnson, wife of our Pastor Darrell, is serving a 6 month appointment as pastor of the West Side Moravian congregation in Bethlehem. She began her work in April

BAPTISM
Congratulations and a wish for God’s richest blessings for Erica Kish-Palos and Michael Palos who presented their son, Wyatt Chandler Gabriel Palos to the Lord in infant Baptism at the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, June 30th. Wyatt was born February 10, 2019. Sponsors are Emily Kish and Christopher Lanza. Rayla Stecker was the Sacristan carrying Wyatt today. Wyatt is the grandson of Trudy Slawik and the brother of Lincoln Palos.
Beginning September 9 at 9:30 AM, the Monday Morning Women's Study Group will be using a study book and DVD by Max Lucado entitled Grace.
Do we really understand grace? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response. When asked, “Do you believe in grace?” who could say no? Max asks deeper questions: Have you been changed by grace? Shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Emboldened by grace? Softened by grace? Snatched by the nape of your neck and shaken to your senses by grace? God’s grace has a drenching about it. A wildness about it. A white-water, riptide, turn-you-upside-downness about it. Grace comes after you. It rewires you. From insecure to God secure. From regret riddled to better-because-of-it. From afraid to die to ready to fly. Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off.
Please let Linda Kimble (908-213-6856 or [email protected]) know by August 19th if you are interested in joining us so that enough study materials can be ordered.

AUGUST BIRTHDAYS
11TH YOUTH MISSION CAMP AT PALMER MORAVIAN
A big thank you to all 13 youth and to all 5 chaperones for helping make our 2019 Mission Camp experience so amazing! We volunteered at Third St. Alliance, Boys and Girls Club of Easton, Easton Senior Lifestyle Campus, and the STAR program in Bethlehem to help our street neighbors. We also learned about the service that the Flemings do with their adorable therapy pups and did some work around our church building. What a great time we had serving our community!

John Hus Society
On September 8th during Connect and Reflect which
occurs between our two worship services, the
Endowment Committee will host a reception to show
appreciation to the current members of the John Hus
Society and to invite all members to learn about this
special way of supporting the life and work of the
Palmer Moravian Church through bequests and other
planned gifts.
The John Hus Society is named after the founder of the
Moravian Church, John Hus, who was martyred in 1415
because of his beliefs. Although he was put to death,
his ideas remain alive and the Moravian Church is part
of the legacy of John Hus. Members of the John Hus
Society are individuals, who like John Hus, will leave a
legacy for the future ministry of the Palmer Moravian
Church after their death. These planned gifts may be
provided through a will, trust, life insurance policy,
retirement account, or other ways.
For more information and to learn more about the John
Hus Society, join the Endowment Committee and
current members on September 8th. Enrollment forms
will be available that day; and are always available in
the church office. It is good for all of us to consider
future blessings and what we can do to bless others.
A PLETHORA OF PETTICOATS YAHs TRIP, THURSDAY SEPT. 19, 10 am
Come tour the special exhibit at one of the historic homes owned by the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society. Staged in the lovely Victorian parlor of the 1833 Mixsell-Illick House at 4th and Ferry Streets in downtown Easton, this exhibition “undresses” the history of common undergarments, leisurewear, and more. It showcases an array of undergarments that created the fashionable silhouettes worn by Northampton County residents from the 1700s to the 1950s, along with some of the chic and comfortable at-home wear they donned as they relaxed or went about their daily tasks. Ooh, la, la! We'll meet at the church at 10:00 am to car-pool, and will have lunch at a downtown Easton restaurant after the tour. Men are welcome! Cost is $5. RSVP to Lois Wildrick, 610-252-8080, [email protected].
RAISINS! WE NEED RAISINS! Palmer Moravian Church has been a wonderful supporter of the Backpack Pals of Easton program, supplying packs of raisins for the 180 bags we distribute 6 times a year. That’s 1,080 packs of raisins!! The Backpack Pals of Easton is a program designed to meet the needs of hungry children in the Easton Area School District. The bags contain nutritious serving size breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to cover a long holiday weekend. Our first delivery for the new school year is coming soon.
Please bring your snack size boxes of raisins to the Gathering Area any time– OR you can make a donation and we will purchase them for you. The best deal we are aware of is Aldi at 96 cents for a six pack.

Looking ahead to
September
Now is the time to plan how you and your family will
participate in the music program this year. There will be
opportunities for nearly everyone (beginning at age 4) to
participate in the ministry of music. The Children’s Choir
(age 4 – grade 6), Sanctuary Singers (grade 7- adult), and
Hilltop Ringers (grade 7 - adult) will return for rehearsals
beginning in the fall. All choirs will welcome new
members. Of course, the New Horizon Worship Team
welcomes new members at any time. It is not necessary to
read music or have previous experience to participate in
any of the choirs. The Hilltop Ringers rehearse Sundays,
11:45 am - 1:15 pm, beginning September 15. If you are
interested in ringing in the bell choir and have not rung
before, please contact Jan Harke to schedule an
orientation session prior to the beginning of rehearsals.
The Children’s Choir will meet for an introductory session
on September 12 at 4:00 pm.

These are just a few of the ways volunteers help keep our church running.
The needs are many.
Please contact the church office or any staff member if you would like to volunteer—there is a job for everyone!
