Bathroom renovations are exciting! You spend so much time in your bathroom (about 416 full days in your lifetime according to one study) so it should be a beautiful, practical, relaxing room in your house. Before you start your bathroom or ensuite renovation though, we thought of 10 things you need to think about first.

Extra Space This is especially true for anyone that has to share their bathroom with someone else. Not only do you want space to move around each other, but you also want your own designated space on the counter, or in the medicine cabinet. When you are renovating, make sure you create enough room to feel like you aren’t stepping on someone’s toes (or worse: having them step on yours) during your hectic morning routine.

Beautiful Tub The tub is a great place to add a little style to your bathroom. Renovations are also the perfect time to get rid of that oddly small tub and replace it with one that fills with enough water to cover your stomach and legs at the same time.

Color We don’t mean you should choose a wildly bright colour for the walls, but when you’re renovating your bathroom, you don’t need to do the whole thing in white or beige. The best part of renovations is that you get to call the shots and you can make it whatever you want. Go for a sea theme and add some blues or greens. Feeling like adding an element of luxury? Adequate Storage Anyone who has ever lived in a poorly designed, small apartment will feel this one in their core. You have so much stuff to store in your bathroom - towels, face clothes, toiletries, cosmetics, medical supplies, cleaning supplies, and a big pack of extra toilet paper. If there isn’t adequate storage for everything, you will feel aggravated every day. During the design stage of your renovation, make sure you account for everything you want to store in your bathroom and guarantee it all has a designated place before construction starts.

House Cohesion Whether you are renovating just your bathroom or a bigger area of your home, make sure it fits in with the rest of the house. This can easily be accomplished with colour schemes, styles, or consistent materials throughout.

Drawers You won’t realize how much you dislike cupboards until you have a home full of drawers. Choose drawers and never lose something to the far, dark, back end of a cupboard again! Drawers let you be more organized, efficient, and can fit more items into the same amount of space.

Efficiency How do you interact with your current bathroom? Do you have to walk back and forth a lot while getting ready? Is it difficult to reach the toilet in the middle of the night when you’re half asleep? Do clothes pile up on the floor because there is no immediate and practical place to put them? Then during your renovation, let’s make your bathroom work for you instead of the other way around.

More Privacy There are a few things that will allow you the appropriate privacy in your bathroom. When it comes to a bathroom window, consider if you would be looking out onto a gorgeous view, or directly into your neighbours house. Do you want classically beautiful clear glass on your shower (which also creates the illusion of space), or would you like a shower completely hidden from the rest of the bathroom. And our favourite way to incorporate privacy in a bathroom - put the toilet in its own little water closet.

Better Light Some things to consider… Is your face well-lit for grooming and makeup? If possible, are you taking advantage of natural light? Are there multiple light switches or a dimmer so you can have both a bright room to see everything, or a darker room for a relaxing soak in the tub? Are your light fixtures complimenting and adding to your style?

Technology You don’t need a smart home to take advantage of technology. At the very least, make sure you have enough plug-ins and they are in smart locations. Other ideas you might like are speakers to play music while you shower, a TV safe from splashing so you can watch your favourite drama while you relaxing in the tub, toilets with new cleaning and heating features, efficient faucets to help you save in the long run… The list goes on.
