This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a piece of old oakville waterfront
Welcome to 10 Park Avenue on the lake. This
distinctive lakefront property is a “One of a kind”.
This home is perfect for restoring to its former glory with
an abundance of windows, high ceilings, wood floors and
well proportioned rooms. All things old are new again as
seen in the 10 Park Avenue architectural plans & elevations
by Michael Pettes for this designated historic home. The
property enjoys an unclaimed road allowance for the
ultimate in privacy.
Situated south of Lakeshore Road, 10 Park Avenue reflects
back to the day when this Regency-style cottage (1852) was
hand crafted by Rev. James Nesbit and his father Thomas.
During the summer months of construction the winds off
the lake must have felt as good then as they do today. This
property boasts 136 feet of lakefront beauty, (non-riparian)
and is walking distance to Oakville’s downtown core.
10 Park Avenue is part of a quiet, quaint neighbourhood,
fondly referred to as "Orchard Beach", with wide streets and
overhanging trees. Step off the back patio and experience
the uniqueness that only waterfront property can bring you.
Watch the rising sun over the horizon and feel the warmth
of a new day.
This location offers complete change in lifestyle as you
savour the morning’s sweet solitude. Stroll to the town
markets or perhaps choose from the many outstanding
restaurants downtown Oakville has to offer.
An address close to everything; thirty minutes to Toronto
and the lake out your window. Enjoy ultimate privacy and
Historywith credit to Oakville Structure Report, Town of Oakville
The house which stands today at 10 Park
Avenue was built in 1852 by the
Reverend James Nisbet and his father,
Thomas Nisbet. James Nisbet was born
in Scotland in 1823. In 1841, while
still in his teens, James Nisbet walked
over 400 miles from his native Glasgow
to London to offer himself for Foreign
Service with the London Missionary
Society. He was refused because he
was too young. Three years later, James
immigrated with his parents to Upper
Canada and entered Toronto’s Knox College.
He came to Oakville in 1850, where he ministered
to the Presbyterian congregations at both Oakville and the
Sixteen Village for the next twelve years. In 1852, James Nisbet and
his father set to work to build for themselves a brick cottage on the
Lakeshore (10 Park Avenue). In 1862, on the encouragement of a former
classmate at Knox College, James travelled west to Fort Garry to become
a missionary. After five years in Manitoba during which time he had
supervised the erection of many schoolhouses, James was sent further
west to found a mission for the Indians on the North Saskatchewan
River. This mission later grew to become the City of Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan, which Nisbet had named in honour of “Queen Victoria’s
deceased husband”. Nisbet did valuable work on the Mission, again
supervising the construction of many of the first buildings. He won
the gratitude of the Indians when hundreds of lives were saved during
a small pox epidemic because of his vaccination program. Worn out by
years of hard work, James Nisbet died in 1874. His life
is commemorated with a monument in Winnipeg
and by a museum dedicated to him, in a log
church which he built with his own hands
in Prince Albert. Nisbet’s family continued
to live in the house at 10 Park until 1916.
His son Thomas was one of Oakville’s first
opticians. As a result of his work on the
construction of a number of buildings across
Manitoba and Saskatchewan, James Nisbet
can be considered a significant Pioneer Builder.
With its low hipped roof, square plan and large
symmetrical windows, this brick house is an example
of the regency style cottage. Although a number of later
additions obscured some of the original structure, the hipped
form, scaled doorways and original brick and stone work of Reverend
Nesbet’s cottage are still apparent.
