Dear Parent/Carer, Wow! What a week! I am thrilled to announce that on Wednesday we were crowned London Schools Dance Champions in both the junior and senior categories. Following our win in early February in the Barnet Schools competition we went on to represent Barnet at the Olympic Park this week. This triumph is the first time a Barnet school has won these prestigious titles and the first time in the history of the competition, where one school has won in both categories. Staff and students are understandably brimming with pride! A huge well done to all involved. Thursday evening saw us compete in the Welwyn Youth Drama Festival, where we entered stunning pieces in both the junior and senior rounds. I was incredibly proud to watch such outstanding performances, which took the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, and marked out both the talent and maturity of our performers. The final judging takes place on Saturday evening and we have our fingers firmly crossed for more silverware to join our cabinets next week. Last week I referenced concerns shared with us by local schools about inappropriate online activity by an adult male and asked all families to take the time to revisit Esafety expectations and screen habits. Attached to this newsletter is additional information about a specific individual using Instagram to contact female students; please do read the additional attachments about this issue and also about our new web-based safeguarding tool, Toot toot. A reminder please about parking to support the safe and smooth running of our lower school campus. Parents should not use Stanley Road or Eagans Close to drop off or collect students. Stanley Road is a small residential street and quickly becomes dangerous with cars waiting for students. Additionally, we always wish to be good neighbours and local residents should not be disturbed by our school. In relation to Eagans Close, a key aspect of our planning permission was that this access point would not be used by Archer families owing to the needs of Holy Trinity primary school. To date families have been respectful of this; however, we have noticed an increase in Archer families attempting to use Eagans Close and politely remind families to support us in not doing so. Thank you in advance for your support. Next week sees our Science Week with a huge array of superb activities to further arouse our studentsscientific curiosity. I look forward to sharing this with you next week. DOUBLE GOLD DANCE VICTORY – Miss Randall

In what was set to be a fierce competition, schools representing 24 boroughs came together on Wednesday at the CopperBox Arena to compete for first place in the London Youth Games dance competition. The Archer Academy had already competed in an earlier round to represent their borough and had won both the both the Junior (years 8 and 9) and Senior (year 10) categories to represent Barnet in the London finals. The groups performed two very different pieces, one a powerful and forceful dance about catching a light and the other an emotional dance about connections and relationships. Both groups faced tough competition from the other London boroughs but were ecstatic to win first place in both categories. This is the first time a Barnet school has won the London wide competition and also the first time a school has won gold in both categories. Well done to all the dancers and staff on such a fantastic result.

SCIENCE WEEK – Dr Morrison

Science week March 13th - 17th Science week is next week with a whole range of activities, talks, movies and trips for students to get involved with. Please encourage your child to sign up and ask them about what they have been doing. We thought we would also like our wider school community to have a chance to get involved so we have decided to run our first science caption competition. If you would like to enter please send your science related caption for the photo below to the Archer Office [email protected] with a heading of 'Science Caption Competition' - we have a lovely science book for our prize. Winning caption to be published next week. Good Luck!

WELWYN YOUTH FESTIVAL – Miss Randall

Our two drama teams were thrilled to compete in the prestigious Welwyn Garden City Youth Drama Festival last night. The adjudicator Alan Haslett said of the Junior team’s performance that they were “bursting with energy, had a lovely physicality” and that the acting was “always convincing and belied the ages of the younger actors in this pacy, punchy production”. And of the Senior team’s performace that their “accomplished piece, played with our emotions, and took us from happy to sad to funny, all of which could be done because of the excellent standard of acting”. Well done to both teams and staff. We can’t wait to hear the results.

GEOGRAPHY RESIDENTIAL TRIP – Miss Jouhal

Page 4: 10 March 2017 22...2017/03/10  · w/c 20th Litfest Week considered for a place. Fri 31st Last day of term April Mon 17th Bank Holiday Tues 18th INSET day Weds 19th Summer term starts

We’ve had a fantastic week taking 50 year 10 students to a fieldstudies centre in Surrey. Students began with an urban study in the town of Merrow, investigating the quality of life in the area. On day three we were able to compare our qualitative and quanitiative data of the town with Park Barn. We spent the entirety of day 3 in the sun strolling along Seaford beach. Students were investigating coastal management strategies and how local communitites feel about it. We were able to complete beach profiles, recording our results on iPads. When we returned to the classroom, through the power of technology and GIS, we were able to automatically graph our results, allowing us to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of costal defences and impacts of long shore drift. As you will see from the photos, we had a wonderful trip.

BOOK OF THE WEEK – Mrs Gillham We are delighted to be introducing a further layer of acknowledgment for the tremendous superb daily efforts of our students. Each week students will be nominated for “book of the week” by subject teachers. Students who demonstrate consistently high standards of organisation, presentation and written work will be awarded this title. Our first students to secure this award are: Merel B in Yr8 for her work in Thematic Learning Mia P in Yr 10 for her work in History Keri P in Yr10 for her work in Geography These students’ books will be displayed in reception next week, please do take a look if you visit the school. Well done ladies!

SPRING SOLOISTS CONCERT – Miss Jones Wednesday 29th March 6-7.30pm, Lower School Tickets are available on Parentpay from today, £4.00 adults/£2.00 children. We are very much looking forward to this year’s Spring Soloists concert. Auditions were held last week and I was so impressed with the quality and variety of the Archer students’ talents. All our performers have been notified of their success in the auditions and I very much look forward to seeing families on the 29th March to share this special evening.

JAR OF AWESOME – Miss Harrison Every week Miss Harrison collects awesome quotes from students and teachers, in this week’s jar: Miss Williams: ‘Year 10 students being totally and completely focused even though half the class was on the Geography trip.’

HEAD OF YEAR UPDATES – Mr Naylor

International Women’s Day: ‘I want to be representative of my race – the human race. I have a chance to show how kind we

can be, how intelligent and generous we can be…’ Maya Angelou

Year 10 – Mr Savage We’ve been a rather smaller cohort this week as the Geography trip has taken almost a third of the year group of exploring for three days. Coupled with our fantastic success in the dance and drama competitions our building has felt very quiet. We’re looking forward to welcome them back on Monday and hearing all about it. Work experience is almost upon us, and there is a real buzz around the school as students prepare to get ready for their week. Staff will be visiting students throughout the week to check in with the students make sure they’re safe, happy and getting as much as they can out of the experience. Woodhouse Open Day is coming up in May. I have been over at Woodhouse coming up with an exciting plan for the day. Students will arrive at Woodhouse, check in and receive their personalised timetable for the day. Students will attend three A-level lessons in subjects of their choosing. This should be an exciting day where students will get a realistic sense of what their key stage five life could look like.

We celebrated International Women’s Day this week and used assembly to discuss some of the issues women face in the film industry. We talked about the types of questions women who work in film can be asked at awards shows compared to men. Students were tasked with thinking about more suitable questions than, ‘who are you wearing tonight?’ Next week is Science week and I look forward to see Yr 10 in action. Have a lovely weekend.

Year 10 Stars of the Week

Sydney-Jane – Excellent on camera interviewing skills and creativity on the Media trip. Daisy-Mae – Outstanding effort and behaviour for learning in English.

Year 9 – Ms Humphrey A huge congratulations to the Year 9 dancers and dramatists who took part in this week’s various competitions with the Creative Performing Arts department. Keep an eye on Archer Facebook and Twitter over the weekend for the Drama results! It was lovely to see medals being worn with pride yesterday by the Dance teams. Last week I was able to accompany the Year 9 Debate Mate teams to Heartlands School in Wood Green - our teams had prepared arguments for and against increasing Britain's overseas, and were given a few minutes to respond to the proposition that celebrities should receive longer jail sentences! Mrs McMullan and I were proud to see Year 9 using official debating terminology and approaching the rounds with decorum. Final bit of house-keeping: The Stubbers deposit deadline concludes today, so please do sign up on Parent-pay for Year 9's end of year trip. Paddle boards ahoy! Next week our Citizenship groups will be taking in a bit of local history down at Highgate Cemetery - all involved must remember to bring trainers and Archer hoodies. Weather dependent - umbrellas too!

Year 9 Stars of the Week

Yael L for her daily positive attitude and involvement in Archer school life. Khian P for being a role model to learning, even when occasional chaos surrounds him.

Year 8 – Mr McSherry Congratulations again to all the Year 8 students involved in the London Schools Dance Competition on Wednesday. A great achievement, of which they should all be very proud.

In this week’s assembly we looked together at the year group’s average scores for behaviour, effort and homework. With the data collection in November and the most recent in February, we compared the scores, hopeful that we would notice an improvement. We were not disappointed…. I am delighted to inform you that the year group’s average scores in all three categories had improved, quite spectacularly with regards to homework. The aim is for all students to achieve a ‘1’ grade in all three areas mentioned above. With Independent Learning Plans now displayed at home, we should be even more focused on doing our best and making the most of the opportunities on offer here at the Archer. Writing about behaviour and effort, perhaps a good time to share with you the top 10 students on the honour roll: Niamh W, Nathalie M, Merel B, Jake P, Julia B, Eleni K, Sumaya F, Natalia K, Michael B and Sebastian H.

Please continue to check ShowMyHomework as well as your child’s planner regularly so you can keep up-to-date with their day-to-day achievement and behaviour summary. This will no doubt help us to continue to develop in all areas. Have a great weekend.

We are very much looking forward to the trip, the English department are working very hard to ensure its success. Have a lovely weekend.
