1943-January 16. Iraq joined

Allied Power during WWII. The pro-British Iraqi government was restored before Iraq declared war on Germany, Italy, and Japan. Iraq fighting in WWII cost more than $200 billions. Also millions of lives were lost during the war.

1958 - Charles de Gaulle brings strong presidential rule to France

1958-July 14.

Monarchy failed to win public support. Later were overthrow by Brig Abd-al-Karim Qusim. This brought an end to monarchy . Iraq then became a repblic.

1980-Creation of Solidarity independent trade union in Poland

1980- Sept. 17. Iran-Iraq war began. There are religious difference disputes between Iran and Iraq. Both are Muslim, but Iraq primarily from the Sunni branch, and the Iranians the suiite. This war was a series of crisis during an area of upheaval in the Middle East in Iran. The war followed months of rising tension between the Iranic Islamic republic and secular nationalist Iraq

1988 - August 20. Iran-Iraq

War ended because Iran accepted U.N. Security Council Resolution. An estimated 1 million soldiers are killed in eight years of fighting. It was also called the First Persian Gulf War. The war ended with a huge cost of lives and economic damaged.

1981-June 7. Israeli air strike

destroyed a nuclear reactor . It happened in southeast of Baghdad, Iraq. It was called the Operation Opera or Operation Babylon. The attack was strongly criticized around the world and Israel was rebuked by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly in two separate resolutions.

1981-Space shuttle Columbia launched into orbit.

1988-March 16. Iraq attacked

Kurdistan using poison gas, killing more than5000 civilians. Iran claimed thousands had died. Later a UN confirmed the used of poison gas on a civilian target by the Iraqis. With the counter attacks in the northern Iraqi town of Halabja, nearly 5,000 people are killed.
