FMESSAGE FROM CHIEF EDITOR
Greetings from the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia.!
This quarter has been yet another busy time of the year. We have officially opened our 25th dialysis centre in Kemaman, terengganu. We will share highlights of the official opening ceremony in our next issue.
We also opened our 2nd training centre, also located in “3 2 square”, Petaling Jaya, to cater to the growing number of participants registering for our post-basic haemodialysis nursing course.
In this issue, our dietician, Ms syaidatun shares with us how to consume carbohydrates when we suffer from diabetes. this is indeed a good read.
as promised in our last issue, we featured all our World Kidney day 2012 events and activities for your reading pleasure. We managed to get a total of 487 people to pledge to donate their organs during our series of events. thank you to each and every one for supporting our World Kidney day 2012 activities.
We have also started “low Impact exercise Classes” for dialysis patients. Please read on further and call us for enquiries.
By the way, we are also in the midst of planning the next “annual dialysis Meeting” for 2012. It will be from 12 – 14 october 2012. Please block your diaries to attend this event. We will share more information on this meeting in our next newsletter.

Featuring dialysis patient at NKF Dato’ Dr Sreenevasan
Dialysis Centre, Petaling Jaya
Pn Asmah & her daughter, Noorisah
“I can’t afford to fall sick. I must be healthy,” sniffed Noorisah
Binti Mohd Yusof (59), whose mother, Puan Asmah Binti Hussein
(77) is an end-stage kidney failure patient undergoing subsidized
dialysis treatment at National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia.
Puan Asmah is one of the oldest patients receiving dialysis
treatment at NKF. She suffered from severe hypertension and
diabetes – which are the two main causes for being on dialysis.
Her dialysis lasts 4 hours per session, 3 times a week and this
really drains her energy due to her old age and weak health
condition.
“I cannot apply for jobs,” said Noorisah, “I have to take care of my mother. At times, it is also difficult for me
as i have to carry her up and down, and my strength is ebbing. I am not exactly young either.”
However, Noorisah is very happy and contented that her mother is receiving quality dialysis treatment and
care at NKF. “The staff nurses provided good care to my mother, and the environment is very comfortable,”
exclaimed Noorisah, as she tenderly tucked in the blanket around her mother who is undergoing dialysis.
“I used to be so worried when the doctor told me that my mother’s kidneys failed. Now that she is doing well
at NKF, I am at ease.” Noorisah also participated in the handicraft-making lessons at the Resource Centre
while her mother went for dialysis. She is glad that she could learn some craft-making and make some small
side income from it.
“Thank you NKF. Thank you to those who help make this possible,” Noorisah smiled.
Yes, thank you for Giving Hope. Your continued support to National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia motivates
and enables us to do what we do best – providing quality dialysis care to underprivileged patients with
end-stage kidneys failure.

The rise of new diabetic cases has continued to show alarming figures throughout the world. According to World Health Organization (WHO), 346 million people worldwide are diabetic - this figure swelled from the 30 million diagnosed in 1985, which is just about three decades ago. This is worth mentioning because in year 2009, 58 percent of the new dialysis patients in Malaysia were diabetics. A very common fact is that: diabetes and hypertension are the two most common causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Malaysia.
The most important aspect of diabetes care for many individuals is making food choices with carbohydrate control as their main concern. Carbohydrate is the food group that affects blood glucose level the most. It is because the body turns carbohydrates into glucose. Eating carbohydrates causes one’s blood sugar levels to rise. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you should avoid carbohydrates altogether if you are diabetic. Carbohydrates are a healthy and important part of a nutritious diet. Carbohydrates are found primarily in plant foods like grains, fruits, and vegetables as well as dairy products. *Refer Table
The American Diabetes Association recommends 45 - 65 percent of total energy intakes for patients with diabetes comes from carbohydrates. Each patient has a different requirement base on their age, body composition, lipid and glucose levels, activity patterns, medications, as well as other medical concern. A dietitian will assist patients to estimate their carbohydrate requirement individually and assist the patients to apply this in their current diet intake. For starters, the “plate method” can be a useful tool! Pick up your plate and apply meal patterns as follows, Half a plate of non-starchy vegetables - such as the greens, carrot, tomato, cauliflower, cabbage Quarter plate of carbohydrates (palm size) - such as rice, noodles, meehoon, kueyteow, pasta, bread
Quarter plate of protein - such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs
A HEALTHY PLATE DIAGRAM, THE PLATE METHOD”!
This method will give you some idea on the appropriate carbohydrate intake for each meal. However, this guide is not individualized to you therefore the requirement may vary. In addition, each patient needs to include around two pieces of fruit each day, a balanced portion of whole grains, legumes, low-fat dairy products. lean meat and fish to better manage the diabetes.
