Blended Learning is a style of education in which students learn via electronic and online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching. Learners can, in part, control the time, pace, and place of their learning.

Combining international research, learning from collaborative partnerships with organisations such as Impact Wales, as well as a range of internal review and feedback from parents and teaching staff, Brecon High School has developed a Blended Learning Policy in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and will use this as an opportunity to:

· Explore meaningful and interesting ways to deliver consistently good pedagogy using a range of strategies and technologies

· Focus upon the concept of creating pupils that are ‘Learning Fit’, being able to develop resilience in order to adjust to new learning scenarios at short notice and apply their skills to these changeable situations

· Ensure that pupils come to school prepared to learn by completing pre-learning tasks and then solidify this learning through consolidatory activities

· Provide on-line tutoring support to all pupils to ensure that the link between home and school remains consistently strong

· Ensure that pupils efforts and the quality of their work is rewarded via the use of Class Charts and that parents/carers are kept informed about pupil progress as often as possible

Blended Learning (pre-study and post-study tasks) will be our alternative to traditional homework, regardless of how soon our world returns to normality.

Electrical energy

In unit 1.1 Electrical circuits, you learned that Energy = Power x Time, where energy is measured in Joules, power is measured in Watts and time in seconds.

The Joule is a very small unit of energy. We often get answers of thousands of joules when answering questions and so using kJ instead of the J can be useful as it means we are dealing with less numbers.

When looking at measuring electrical energy (or electricity) used, even a kilojoule (1000J) seems inappropriate as a simple light bulb uses 72kJ in just 30 minutes.

If we used the Joule as the base unit for paying for all the electricity used at home we would have bills requesting payment for thousands of millions of Joules each month.

A new unit is required for large quantities of electrical energy.

This is the kilowatt hour or ‘kWh’. We refer to this as a measure of ‘units used’

1 kWh is the electrical energy converted by a 1 kW appliance used for 1 hour.

In terms of joules this is: 1kWh = 1000 x 60 x 60 = 3,600,000J

Even in ‘kWh’ some users can use over a thousand units or ‘kWh’s of electricity each month.

Answer the following questions, use your other booklets or equation sheet to find any formulae needed.

The Electricity Meter

An electricity meter measures the amount of electricity used in units called kilowatt-hours (kWh) or units.

(Remember: A kilowatt-hour is the amount of energy used by a 1 kilowatt appliance in 1 hour.)

The formula to calculate Energy used in kWh is:-

(Notice the change to units of power and time)

Units used (kWh) = Power (kW) x Time (hours)

Fill in the triangle for this formula, you could use UU for energy used or units used if you like. It might be worth putting (kW) under power and (h) under time to remind you of the units as these are not commonly used in equations. If you are planning on sitting the foundation tier paper then you can ask your teacher for help with this.

A modern meter is electronic and many people find them easier to read than the traditional meters.

Modern electronic meters still use the kilowatt-hour as the basic unit of chargeable electricity.

Calculating the cost of electricity

After calculating the amount of units used, the next step is to calculate the cost of this electricity. We have the equation.

 

Cost = number of units used x cost per unit

You can put the cost into the equation in pounds or pence but will get your answer in the same unit.

Example

Calculate the cost of the electricity used when a 2kW heater is switched on maximum for 90 minutes, if electricity costs 10p per unit (kWh).

90 minutes = 1.5 hours.

Units used = power (kW) x Time (h)

= 2 x 1.5 = 3 kWh

Cost = UU x CPU = 3 x 10p = 30p.

Calculate the cost of the electricity used when a hob uses an average of 0.25kW for 3 hours.

2.The Cost of Making Toast

A toaster has a power rating of 1.5kW.

If the toaster is used for 5 minutes every day,and the electricity cost per unit = 11p, then how much would it cost per week to make toast if it used Monday to Saturday (6 days)?

3.The cost of drying your hair - how much more expensive is it to dry long hair than short hair?

Two hairdryers each have a power rating of 1kW.

Short hair takes about 6 minutes to dry while long hair can take anything up to 20 minutes. Calculate the difference in cost between drying long and short hair. Cost per unit = 12p

4.Traditional Light Bulbs v Low Energy Light Bulbs

A typical traditional light bulb has a power rating of 60W or 0.06kW,

The equivalent saver bulb produces the same amount of light but has a power rating of 11W or 0.011kW

Assuming the lights are left on for 3 hours per day, for a whole year, approximately 1100 hours, calculate the saving made by using a low energy bulb compared to a traditional light bulb. Electricity costs 10p per unit.

Understanding an Electricity Bill

The total cost of electricity used by any household depends on three things:

· How many electrical appliances are being used

· How long each appliance is used for

· The power rating of each individual appliance.

When calculating a household electricity bill, the first step is to use the meter to find the number of units of electricity used...

Having found the number of units of electricity used, we multiply this number by the cost per unit.

In addition, the electricity company adds a standing charge per day just because you are connected to them.

This pays for the up-keep of the equipment necessary to supply the electricity.

Electrical energy

In unit 1.1 Electrical circuits, you learned that Energy = Power x Time, where energy is measured in Joules, power is measured in Watts and time in seconds.

The Joule is a very small unit of energy. We often get answers of thousands of joules when answering questions and so using kJ instead of the J can be useful as it means we are dealing with less numbers.

When looking at measuring electrical energy (or electricity) used, even a kilojoule (1000J) seems inappropriate as a simple light bulb uses 72kJ in just 30 minutes.

If we used the Joule as the base unit for paying for all the electricity used at home we would have bills requesting payment for thousands of millions of Joules each month.

A new unit is required for large quantities of electrical energy.

This is the kilowatt hour or ‘kWh’. We refer to this as a measure of ‘units used’

1 kWh is the electrical energy converted by a 1 kW appliance used for 1 hour.

In terms of joules this is: 1kWh = 1000 x 60 x 60 = 3,600,000J

Even in ‘kWh’ some users can use over a thousand units or ‘kWh’s of electricity each month.

Answer the following questions, use your other booklets or equation sheet to find any formulae needed.

The Electricity Meter

An electricity meter measures the amount of electricity used in units called kilowatt-hours (kWh) or units.

(Remember: A kilowatt-hour is the amount of energy used by a 1 kilowatt appliance in 1 hour.)

The formula to calculate Energy used in kWh is:-

(Notice the change to units of power and time)

Units used (kWh) = Power (kW) x Time (hours)

Fill in the triangle for this formula, you could use UU for energy used or units used if you like. It might be worth putting (kW) under power and (h) under time to remind you of the units as these are not commonly used in equations. If you are planning on sitting the foundation tier paper then you can ask your teacher for help with this.

A modern meter is electronic and many people find them easier to read than the traditional meters.

Modern electronic meters still use the kilowatt-hour as the basic unit of chargeable electricity.

Calculating the cost of electricity

After calculating the amount of units used, the next step is to calculate the cost of this electricity. We have the equation.

 

Cost = number of units used x cost per unit

You can put the cost into the equation in pounds or pence but will get your answer in the same unit.

Example

Calculate the cost of the electricity used when a 2kW heater is switched on maximum for 90 minutes, if electricity costs 10p per unit (kWh).

90 minutes = 1.5 hours.

Units used = power (kW) x Time (h)

= 2 x 1.5 = 3 kWh

Cost = UU x CPU = 3 x 10p = 30p.

Calculate the cost of the electricity used when a hob uses an average of 0.25kW for 3 hours.

Cost per unit of electricity = 10p.

2.The Cost of Making Toast

A toaster has a power rating of 1.5kW.

If the toaster is used for 5 minutes every day,and the electricity cost per unit = 11p, then how much would it cost per week to make toast if it used Monday to Saturday (6 days)?

3.The cost of drying your hair - how much more expensive is it to dry long hair than short hair?

Two hairdryers each have a power rating of 1kW.

Short hair takes about 6 minutes to dry while long hair can take anything up to 20 minutes. Calculate the difference in cost between drying long and short hair. Cost per unit = 12p

4.Traditional Light Bulbs v Low Energy Light Bulbs

A typical traditional light bulb has a power rating of 60W or 0.06kW,

The equivalent saver bulb produces the same amount of light but has a power rating of 11W or 0.011kW

Assuming the lights are left on for 3 hours per day, for a whole year, approximately 1100 hours, calculate the saving made by using a low energy bulb compared to a traditional light bulb. Electricity costs 10p per unit.

Understanding an Electricity Bill

The total cost of electricity used by any household depends on three things:

· How many electrical appliances are being used

· How long each appliance is used for

· The power rating of each individual appliance.

When calculating a household electricity bill, the first step is to use the meter to find the number of units of electricity used...

Having found the number of units of electricity used, we multiply this number by the cost per unit.

In addition, the electricity company adds a standing charge per day just because you are connected to them.

This pays for the up-keep of the equipment necessary to supply the electricity.
