WelCome

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Alice Desert Festival and the exciting events outlined in this program. The Festival is not

just a Festival in Alice Springs; it is a festival for Alice Springs. The eclectic range of events scattered in the following pages are invitations to you, your family and your friends, whether you’re a local or visitor, to engage in the landscape of this artistically and culturally rich region.  This wonderful event began 12 years ago. I have no doubt that this year will be the strongest Alice Desert Festival presented............................................................................................Her Honour the Honourable Sally Thomas AM Administrator of the Northern Territory

Here we are again for another action-packed Alice Desert Festival!

I am proud to say that the Alice Springs Town Council has been a strong supporter of

the Festival and contributes significantly both with funding and in-kind support.

The Festival is a great way to support the arts and celebrate Alice’s cultural diversity. It also helps grow our fantastic local talent and attract visitors to our beautiful region.

I’d like to acknowledge the Alice Desert Festival team, the sponsors and the many volunteers for their tireless efforts in putting on such a great show each year.

Hello and welcome to the 2012 Alice Desert Festival. This year we embark on a Festival that speaks of the unique space in which we find ourselves.

This Festival represents a chance to engage with the artistic and cultural heart of the central desert. This engagement transcends the usual performer – audience dynamic. Over 500 artists contributing to over 50 projects converge within the Festival this year. For those interstate artists who come to perform, it is not a matter of flying in, performing, and flying out, it’s about value adding to the artistic spirit of Alice Springs and forging new pathways alongside the local artistic community. I am constantly in awe of the non-stop creative energy and capacity of Central Australian artists. Along with these artists the Festival is welcoming a range of artistic partners to present events across the whole spectrum of art forms. This Festival isn’t a one way conversation. It exists to allow you, the audience, to express yourselves just as much as it does for those on the stage, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, detailed in the following pages. You’ve got two months of listening, laughing, tasting, seeing, learning and interacting ahead of you. I look forward to seeing you all amongst it............................................................................................Joe PickettFestival Manager

Festival time is a time for us to come together, a time to celebrate who we are and where we are, a time to share our stories and a time to look forward as a community. The 2012

Alice Desert Festival is a delicious program of activities and entertainment that reflects the richness and diversity of Alice Springs and Central Australia - there is something for everyone! Red Hot Arts Central Australia is proud to invite your participation in the 2012 Alice Desert Festival. We hope that you, your family and your friends are able to join with us and sample from this exquisite menu of cultural, creative and artistic fare! ...........................................................................................Tony Duke ChairRed Hot Arts Central Australia

Olive Pink (1884 -1975) was a botanical illustrator, anthropologist, gardener and a trailblazing Aboriginal land rights activist and environmentalist. In October 1956, at the age of 72, Olive Pink set up her tent on the grounds of what is now the Olive Pink Botanic Garden. The First Garden is her story. The story of a woman who took no prisoners in her quest to develop her life’s dream; it is also the story of how diverse cultures have valuable lessons for each other.

graffiti – make Your markA high energy dance-theatre work presented by SPRUNG Youth Dance, an ensemble of dancers aged 15-21. With contemporary dance, hip hop and acrobatics, the work is a highly physical exploration of what it means to “make your mark”. Alongside choreographers Miriam Nicholls, Jordan Vanderschuit, James Loveday and Hayley Michener, the dancers have created a production that reflects this place, Alice Springs, with a unique new voice.

Tasmanian based community artist Ralf Haertel and Alice Springs textile artist nicky Schonkala are joining forces in a collaborative installation to transform the façade of the Alice Springs Law Courts with a riot of knit-graffiti colour. Working closely with community volunteers and other contributing artists, and also incorporating recycled, pre-loved, knitted and crocheted blankets and rugs, this project is all about the feel good effects of getting ‘cosy’.

In 2011, sixteen Tangentyere Artists created narratives about Ngurra (home) life, on corrugated metal for the ‘Lighthouse’ at the Darwin Festival. The vibrant and dynamic paintings mix cultural iconography, figurative and textual elements in rich jewel-like colours, and vividly represent the landscape and activities of Central Australian life.

This project re-imagines the built environment of our public spaces. Video Architecture is spontaneous, collaborative and interactive; exploring the relationship between visual arts, integrating elements of drawing, painting, movement and sound with the ethereal, dream-like element of light. Stripped of the over-reliance on electro gimmickry, this technique is a constant investigation of the elemental nature of physical media within art.

the right track – stay strong, live longThis is the result of an adventure in art and culture; using them to create a new dialogue of life in communities and exploring pain, sorrow, happiness, peace and hope for the future.

This project is a suicide prevention initiative, developed in response to the high incidence of youth suicide across Indigenous communities in Central Australia. The project was welcomed into eight communities by elders and community leaders. Every community worked to develop unique messages into a narrative of strength in the face of adversity, through family, law and culture.

Do you know about the food and medicine plants growing in abundance in the Central Australian bush? Can you identify which are poisonous and which will feed you or keep you healthy? How do you prepare them? What do they taste like? Are they nutritious? Come to the Alice Springs Community Garden to help us plant our new Bushfoods and Medicine garden, hear stories, share food and learn.

festival artist‘The east-West Line’artwork by marina strocchi

This year’s Festival branding features the work of Marina Strocchi’s ‘The East-West Line’. Marina’s work has evolved from printmaking. This was followed by a series of small gouaches and oils paying homage to the desert landscape in the 1990s and now, for over a decade, she has worked on a larger scale with acrylic. She has developed a unique visual response to the nature that surrounds her.
