*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below; Praise God, ye saints, for evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

* (The asterisk indicates parts of the worship when the congregation is invited to stand as they are able.)

JULY 23, 2017 Order of Worship 10:00 a.m.

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING Mardee Rightmyer Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Procession Richard Wagner

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise be the name of the Lord. People: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forever more. From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Leader: The Lord is high above all nations, and God’s glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? People: The Lord raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. God gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord. Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. -Psalm 113

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, where may we go from your Spirit? Where may we flee from your presence? If we take the wings of the morning and settle in the farthest limits of the sea, that metaphor for chaos and all that frightens us, even there, you are with us. Your right hand holds us fast. We praise you for we are fearfully and wonderfully made… Eternal God with such assurances, confession is not a time of fear but of renewal and reorientation of our life. Forgive our sins, we pray, and show us the way you would have us go, and carry us forward in faith. Through Christ our Lord we pray all these things. Amen.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" People: It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Leader: So believe the good news of the Gospel: People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. -Matthew 13:18-23

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE AR HYD Y NOS Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure. Here you heard my dear Son’s story; here you touched him, saw his glory. Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all! People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

*THE HYMN (SEE INSERT) Psalm 139 BEACH SPRING

THE ANTHEM The Call Z. Randall Stroope Come my way, my truth, my life: such a way, as gives us breath: such a truth, as ends all strife: such a life as killeth death. Come, my light, my feast, my strength: such a light, as shows a feast: such a feast, as mends in length; such a strength as makes his guest. Come, my joy, my love, my heart: such a joy, as none can move: such a love, as none can part: such a heart, as joys in love. Come my joy, my love, my heart: come, my way, my truth, my life. FIRST FRIENDS

First Friends is a program that will pair current MPC members with those who have recently joined our church family. After someone joins the church, you as a First Friend will keep the new members informed about special events and programs the church offers. Also you will introduce our new friends to other members of the congregation. If you or your family would be interested in participating or learning more about the program, please give your name to one of the deacons.

FRESH FLOWERS Would you like fresh flowers in worship? Would you like to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, new baby or the life of a friend? If so, then please see the sign up sheet for flowers on the bulletin board outside of the Session Room. Pick the date, sign your name, write your email and phone number or contact Georgia Marshall, [email protected], or Lynn Daniel, [email protected], for details. GALA EQUIPMENT NEEDED Does anyone have 8 ice cream or wooden cabaret chairs we could borrow for the gala? Light weight would be great. If so, please contact Shari Tant at [email protected]. THERE’S A PRESCHOOL OPENING

As families move, Morningside Presbyterian Preschool has had openings become available for one 3-year-old student and one PreK student. Tell your friends and neighbors to grab them up quickly. Contact Melinda Sandkam at 404.685.8758 or [email protected] today. We also have a few openings for each week of summer camp still available. SOCIAL MEDIA IS BUZZING

Morningside wants to connect to the community more than ever! Are you handy when it comes down to Twitter and Instagram? If so, our communications team would like to expand MPC’s reach on social media and could certainly use your help! Volunteer to be a part of the communications team by contacting Daisy Ottmann [email protected].

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6-7

Next week Margaret Hofland will lead the lectionary reading and the discussion that follows. CHILDREN

This Sunday, children will hear the lesson “God Knows Me” from Psalm 139.

NICHOLAS HOUSE MISSION PROJECT

Due to rainy weather, we postponed our June event to later this month. Please join us! On Saturday, July 29 at 10:45 a.m., we will be planting flowers, painting brightly colored picnic tables, mulching and clearing the yard for residents to enjoy outdoor activities at Nicholas House. Nicholas House (830 Boulevard SE) is a transitional home for homeless families who are seeking long term housing. This large outdoor space is where most of the children spend their free time, so let’s help them make it a better place. After we work, we’ll grab lunch and enjoy fellowship at Tin Lizzy’s Cantina (Grant Park). Please rsvp to Katye Watts, [email protected] or via the SignUpGenius sent by Mardee. A ONCE PER MONTH COMMITMENT On Wednesday, July 26 the teachers return from their summer break to prepare for their students’ return… and as in years past, we want to celebrate and appreciate them with a “back to school” luncheon on their first day. If you would like to contribute to decorations and/or help with the luncheon, please contact Leslie Prince. If you’d like the privilege of shaping the life of a child as a tutor (a once/month commitment) Baron Mullis is your contact. For any other questions, speak to shepherd Leslie Prince. HELP WITH RIDES Help the Kinumbe-Bauma family with their transition here in the States with something as simple as offering a ride. Since the worship service changed to 10 a.m., the pick-up time will be 9:30 a.m. Please consider giving the Kinumbe-Bauma family a ride and helping them get to know one more member of their church community. http: www.signupgenius.com/go/409044ca5aa28a3ff2-rides.

DONUT DAYS Join us for Donut Days with Mardee Sundays throughout this month beginning at 9:15 a.m. Children’s Ministries will provide light refreshments in the playground and picnic area so that Mardee can meet the families of the church. Families are encouraged to join us for at least one of these. It’s a great time for children to get a snack and run off some steam before worship at 10 a.m. COLLECTION FOR DOBBS ELEMENTARY Please support our partnership with Dobbs Elementary school as the teachers prepare for the new school year. We are collecting items to stock their classrooms and student incentive closet. Please see the list of requested items on the Mission bulletin board or on the church website under the “Serve” link. The deadline for items is Sunday, July 30 when we will host Principal Dr. Charnita West for our Minute Message. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We are in need of volunteers Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Intown Collaborative Ministry pantry to distribute food to homeless and in-need folks in our area. The pantry is located at McIver Hall beside Druid Hills Presbyterian Church near the corner of Highland and Ponce. Please contact Laura Ulep at [email protected] or Nancy Collins at [email protected] if you are interested in helping. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

Mark your calendars for Morningside’s fourth annual musical gala! This year’s production features music from your favorite Disney movies, both old and new, and will be sure to enchant the whole family. Invite your friends and neighbors to see these performances on Saturday, August 19 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 20 at 3 p.m. It will be magical!
