The Wheeler 4th of July Celebration was four days of fun and festivities. Beginning on Saturday, July 1, with the Wheeler Co-Ed Softball Tournament. VIP from Childress won this event. MURK from Pampa was the run- ner-up. “Let’s Rodeo” 2nd Annual Goat Roping also took place on the 1st. In this event Wade Butler and Cody Lewis took the honors in Rope & Tie. Ike Hanes won High Money Header and Skyler Mitchell won High Money Heeler. The prize for dummy roping went to Leslie Mendoza. Concluding the first day’s activities was the 1st Annual Corn Hole Tournament – Janette Umsted Scholarship. Brennan Umsted and Megan Reed were the winners. Runner-up honors went to Ca- sey Childress and Joe Sewell. Megan Reed took the title for the singles division. Sunday, July 2 saw the activities turn to the 4th Annual Mr. and Miss Firecracker Pageant. The winners of the pageant were – Mr. Firecrack- er 0-3 years: Jordan Medlock; Miss Firecracker 0-3 years: Chloe Shreffler; Mr. Firecracker 4-6 years: Nathan Cooper; Miss Firecracker 4-6 years: Braylee Koepke; Miss Firecracker 7-10 years: Ava Toney. There were no contestants in the Mr. Fire- cracker 7-10 division. Knockerball Soccer Tournament completed the Sunday schedule. The winners in this event were the Chupacabra’s. Monday, July 3 was the day of the Dodgeball Tournament. This event had four divisions. The Facebreakers made up of Braxton Scott, Chloe Scott, Kailyn Hankins, Keegan Sullivan, Sawyer Schlabs, and Jake Houska won the elementary di- vision. By JIM BECK Reporter Gary Ware has announced that Legends of Classic Rock and Roll 98.9 will soon join Leg- ends 92.9. The new station should be on the air by July 15. The new station KXNZ 98.9 will feature a classic rock format featuring Classic Rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. KSNZ 92.9 took the air April 1, 2015, with a format of classic coun- try. Both Legends stations will be operating out of Shamrock and broadcast from their tower south of Wheeler. This will add variety to the ra- dio for Shamrock, Wheeler and the surrounding area. The area stretches to Canadian to the north, Lefors to the west, Wellington to the south, and Sayre to the east. Gary is excited about the increased football coverage this will provide for both Wheeler and Shamrock schools. Last year they split the schedule broadcasting half of the Wheeler games and half Shamrock games. With the change, Josh Britt will broadcast Wheeler games on 98.9. Buc Weatherby and Greg Garrison will broadcast Shamrock games on 92.9. Kelly Walker will man the Shamrock office. Kelly will be in the office during July from 1-4:30. Beginning August 1, office hours will be 9-12 and 1-4:30. Tune in to 98.9 if you are a rock fan or 92.9 for the country lovers. The Shannon Motorsports team visited 3 different tracks in the past two weeks and Logan was able to park his MB Customs modified powered buy a Knowles Performance Engine in victory lane all 3 nights. On July 1 the team went to Elk City and picked up the win. Then on July 7 they traveled to Wichita Speedway in Wichita Falls where a last lap pass coming out of turn 4 put Lo- gan in the victory circle. Then on Saturday they returned to familiar stomping ground at Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo where Logan had a clean sweep. He won his heat race, the dash for cash and the A-Main event. Cassidy Car- ter, Helen Catlett, Paul Wright, Sean Wright, Dal- ton Wright, and Alex Retana made up the team. Honors for the Most Patriotic Team went to the Facebreakers. The Best Group Costume went to the Natural. This team was made up of Bryce Melton, Breken Melton, Damien Glasgow, Patien Armstrong, Kameron Johnson, Aniah Eggers and Ricky Eggers. Best team name went to the Ham- merin’ Holts with members Justin Holt, Courtney Holt, Soren Holt, Georgia Holt, Mike Holt and Ty Taylor. Then on July 4th the big day had arrived. It was kicked off with the 12th Annual 1st Lt. Ben Britt Memorial RWB Color Fun Run/Walk. The female winners of this event were: Hold- en Holwick (10 & under), Ruby Tiburcio (11-18 years), Taylor Sparks (19-30 years), Amanda Rives (31-55 years) and Cathi Gillette (55 and Old- er). For the male division the winners were: Soren Holt & Tazian Brown (tied for 10 & under), Rylun Clark (11-18 years), Josh Britt (19-30), Justin Holt (31-55 years) and Jack Helton (55 & older). Winners from the parade were Wellington State Bank, Kim’s Barber Shop, Market Square Thrift- way, The Rock Performing Arts and Fitness, The Andris/Water’s Family, Machille Henson, the Scott’s and the McMudders’s. After the parade, activities moved to the park where there were many more competitions. The 3-on-3 Carolyn Sabbe Basketball Tournament winners were the 30for30 team of Dagen Moore, Kallen Moore, Jared Messer and Jansen Moore. “How I Set Your Mother” team took the Sand Volleyball Tournament. This team consisted of Jessica Jackson, Laramie Lancaster, Carissa Mc- Carter, Britt McCarter, Ashleigh Armstrong and Brock Sabbe. The Turtle Race had a host of competitors and had to be broken into heats with the winners com- peting to become the champion. The heat winners were Kamryn Ledbetter, Jake Houska, Braxton Angeley, Nathan Cooper, Christian Shipley, Brax- ton Ramirez and Jesse Wilks. The Grand Champi- on was Braxton Ramirez. The Horseshoe Tournament saw 14 teams in doubles and 8 in singles. Cody and Rich took 1st place in the doubles. Jason Warren and Chris Archibald placed 2nd. The singles competition saw T.A. Taylor win and Drew Thomas get 2nd. After the conclusion of the competitions it was time to recognize the real reason for the celebra- tion. We do not celebrate July 4th; we celebrate our freedom and independence. Our Veterans made all this possible. There was one WWII Veteran and 4 Korean Veterans present- ed with Quilts of Valor. Next to be honored were the 1st Responders. VFD’s from Allison, Briscoe, Kelton Mobeet- ie, Shamrock, and Wheeler, as well as the EMS crews, Wheeler County Sheriff’s office, Shamrock Police Department, Greenbelt and Xce Linemen and the Wheeler County Precinct Hands. The end of the festivities were the announcement of the Chamber of Commerce Awards. Man of the Year honors went to Brother Glen Turvaville. Woman of the Year was Debra Finsterwald. Teen of the Year was Clay Wilson. Business of the Year honors went to H&H Tire, 7H Angus owned by Jack and Chad Helton. Employee of the Year went to Lanette Hastey. The Pioneer Spirit of the Year went to Johnny Velzsquez. By JIM BECK Reporter Saturday July 8, the U Drop Inn was the place to be for Classic cars, barbeque, and live music with Un- der the Neon. The evening got started with Clas- sic Cars lined up in front of the U Drop Inn. There were 16 cars and one Indian motorcycle. The owners were proudly displaying their rides. The winners were determined by a vote by the public. The winners were Kenneth Campbell - 1st, Rod Vaughn - 2nd and Cathy LeGrand – 3rd. If the cars were not enough attrac- tion, there was also food. Pat Go- mez was serving brisket and pulled pork barbeque sandwiches. When the car show ended, the cruising and music began. While the Classic Cars cruised 66 and Hwy 83 music was provided by Jayce Lepp, Strace Everett and Matt Stephenson. Folks sat back in their lawn chairs, listened to the music and watched the cars cruise by. Crystal Hermesmeyer and Krys- tal Caldwell put together this event to draw attention to 66. Apparently they were happy with the results as they are planning the same type of event for August 12. The Wheeler 4th of July Celebration was four days of fun and festivities.

Beginning on Saturday, July 1, with the Wheeler Co-Ed Softball Tournament. VIP from Childress won this event. MURK from Pampa was the run-ner-up.

Gary Ware has announced that Legends of Classic Rock and Roll 98.9 will soon join Leg-ends 92.9. The new station should be on the air by July 15.
