Time thunders on and another month hasbeen and gone. I’ve just noticed that come

next month’s offering another milestonewill have been reached, as I will haveedited as many issues as founder EditorKelvin Holdom. It doesn’t seem like 6½yrs since he left ‘the team’ in charge of his‘baby’ and moved to pastures new. I hopewe’ve done him proud and kept up theintegrity of the magazine he so lovinglystarted on his own. I certainly couldn’t doit without help so I admire what he did inthe early days and especially usingprograms and equipment we would allfind dinosaurs today. I know we’ve madea few tweaks along the way but in essenceit is still the publication he left with us andI hope villagers are happy with how it is

evolving. Full colour has to be ourultimate goal but in the present financialclimate that is still an awful long way off,but one day I hope we can fulfil ‘mydream’ and we will be able to make thatfinal big step.

How sad to see the Bell Inn closed, Ihaven’t spoken to anyone who can everremember it being empty before, and nowit is bolted and barred, with steelshuttered doors and

reinforced internal panelling on thewindows. It truly looks sorry for itself. Letus hope that the property owners,Enterprise Inns, can soon find anotherpublican to take it on and hopefully returnit to the vibrant place it once was.

Page 8: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

Personally I don’t think it needs to be amusic venue, but to return it to atraditional English pub with good beer, great food and an ambience that makeseveryone feel welcome. The bottom end ofthe village seems dead

without it, so come on Enterprise, find usa landlord who can inspire the staff andcustomers to return and make it one of ‘theplaces to go’ in Minster.

I tell you time really flies if you aren’twatching it ! Elsewhere in this issue youwill read that the Rev’d Canon Bob Colesis retiring after 17 years, YES that’s right Isaid 17 years as our Anglican Vicar. Heends his ministry here at the end of Apriland his final Service is scheduled to be on

21st April at 11.00am so be sure to attendif possible so we can give him a greatsend off.

There has been speculation as to whetheror not, because Bob is leaving, that Open

Gardens might not happen this year, butaccording to the information we’ve beengiven to publish this month it wouldappear that the annual 2 day event is still‘ON’, which is good to hear as it isalways very popular with villagers andvisitors alike.

We don’t have room for a report from theShow Committee this month, but I’ve been

asked to say that both they and theTwinning Assn are looking for local bands

The activities at the Club are building upnicely as the Short Mat season is goinginto its final quarter. Through the darkdays and nights the competitions havebeen

By the end of February the Triplescompetition will have been played, leaving the Mixed Pairs to be played onthe 17th March. The three league teamsare still progressing with mixed resultsand although we might not like it, it is timethat other teams take the top positions.Next season we will need to do better.

We feel sure many of you now know of therecent sudden closure of the Bell Inn and

whilst speculation as to why and what’snow going to happen to it, is rife in thevillage, plus the added rumour thatEnterprise Inns intend to put in a Polishlandlord, Minster Matters felt we ought toask the property owners, Enterprise Inns, what they had to say.

through. I do hope you will forgive thedelay.

We are delighted that our lorry full ofChristmas shoeboxes left for Kosova on

Saturday, 1 December. It was a freezing, cold morning, but our team of enthusiastic

volunteers braved the elements andworked very hard to get the shoeboxes onand

send the lorry on its way. I am pleased tosay that our lorry was unloaded inGjakove, Kosova on Saturday, 8

CO-OP KITTED OUT WITH LIFE-SAVING DE-FIBRILLATOR

You may already be apprised of this.

Page 28: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

However I was recently in the Co-operative

shop located at the Minster roundabout atthe top of Tothill Street when I noticed

mounted on the wall by the checkout tills acardiac de-fibrillator.

The manager informed me that it had beenin place for about a month and that all

the Co-operative outlets now had theselife-saving devices installed. I can say thatthe modern de-fibrillators are brilliantlydesigned - essentially a sort of life-jacketvest which has the skin contact electrodesbuilt in. All the attending ‘life-saver’ hasto do is rip off the patient’s top clothing, strap on the de-fibrillator ‘life-jacket’ and

Page 29: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

follow the simple instructions which areboth written on a card and with somedevices may be spoken.

Anyway, the de-fibrillator jacket ‘reads’the patient’s heart signals and if, and onlyif needed, applies the correct andsimultaneously corrective electric shock. All the rescuer has to do is strap thepatient into the de-fibrillator jacket, makesure there is skin contact with the chestelectrodes, follow the simple instructionsand simply let it do what it is programmedto do.

I understand the Thanet AmbulanceService personnel instructed the Co-operative

staff in its use and will be happy to adviserepresentatives from Minster village. Welldone the Co-op!

AVOID A DIY DISASTER ON YOURHOME

As Spring approaches, many people startturning their thoughts towards home

improvements and those little jobs thathave been put off over the winter, but fire

crews are urging residents to takesufficient safety steps to prevent their ‘Do-it-Yourself’

(DIY) efforts leading to disaster.

Some DIY activities can increase the riskof fire and injury in the home. These rangefrom fires ignited by blow torches beingused to strip paint, to fires caused byfaulty electrical equipment which may

Page 36: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

have been stored in a damp garage or shedover the

winter period.

Community Safety Manager, StuartSkilton, said: “Whether it’s improving the

kitchen, fixing up the spare room, orsimply cutting the grass, accidents canhappen

when safety advice is ignored. Themessage from Kent Fire and RescueService (KFRS) is therefore; if you aregoing to do it yourself – do it safely.

“People often make mistakes when theyare either tired or trying to get jobsfinished quickly. Always ensure that the

Page 37: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

task is within your capabilities and thatyou take

professional advice when required.”

He added: “If you are carrying out DIY,this is an ideal time to fit a smoke alarm inyour property. Just three breaths of firesmoke can prove fatal, making a smokealarm an essential safety feature in yourhome. If you already have a smoke alarm, ensure it is clear from dust and that thebatteries are working.”

To help avoid a DIY disaster always:

Check you have the correct tools for thejob

Keep children and pets safe and remove

Page 38: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

any obstructions from your workplace

When checking or repairing electricaltools always turn them off at the mains

Flammable liquids should be used inaccordance with manufacture’sinstructions

Before attempting to drill holes, check forelectrical wiring running behind walls

Fit smoke alarms on each level of yourhome and test them weekly

MEMORIES

Walking past ‘The Old Bakery’ in ChurchStreet just after Christmas our daughterwas

explaining the building to our grand-daughter. “This was the bakers. Grandmagave me

some money and I walked to the bakersand used it to buy the bread. Sometimes I

Page 44: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

would have a penny roll of sweets.”

This was in the 1970’s when Mr and MrsFoster had the bakery.

Entering the shop the wonderful smell offresh bread. Different types of bread

displayed on the shelves, square tin, milk, small round, sometimes flead cakes and

Kentish huffkins. Behind the counter werethe staff, either Mrs Smith, Mrs Ackleton

(Maureen Collard’s mum) or Mrs Foster.

No complicated till, just a drawer underthe counter to open and put the money in!!

During the morning, Mr Foster could be

seen in the van going out on deliveryrounds.

I remember a delighted Mrs Foster tellingme Wendy was going to teacher training at

Winchester. I couldn’t work out whetherMrs Foster was more delighted at her

daughter going to teacher training, or, thatshe would be away for the following threeyears!!

Name and address supplied

Having had 2 references above to ‘FleadCakes’ we here at MM thought we oughtto

find some information on them for those

of us who don’t know what they are, sohere’s a little something we found on theInternet:

"FLEAD" CAKES.

When pigs are slaughtered, set apart theweb of fat (the “flead”) in which the

kidneys are enclosed. This is the mostdelicate of animal fat, and it is a pity tomix it with the other for the simpleprocess of rendering. If it cannot be usedimmediately while still fresh, render itseparately in a small vessel placed in apan of boiling water. The lard thusprocured will be found particularly lightand of fine flavour.

But the "flead" makes beautiful pastry if

used as soon as cold. Strip it of the skin, then shred it and mix with flour in theproportion of half a pound, or rather more,of fat to a pound of flour. Add a pinch ofsalt, and work into a light dough withwater in the usual way. Roll out, fold overtwice, roll out again to half an inch thick;cut into rounds, and bake in a quick oven.If liked sweet, some castor sugar may bemixed with the flour.

Though on a somewhat smaller scale thanthe St Matthew Passion, which was

performed two years ago, the St John isequally renowned for its beauty andpower.

The narrative is taken from chapters 18and 19 of St John’s Gospel. The tenor

Evangelist tells the story, with the othersoloists taking the parts of the characters -

principally Jesus and Pilate - and thechorus acts as the crowd. There are twolevels of comment and reflection on theaction; firstly, in a series of arias for thesoloists, and then, in the 12 chorales -settings of hymn tunes popular in Bach’sday, which punctuate the piece.

Page 77: 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of articles and notices ... · 1 Welcome to the March 2013 issue of Minster Matters The Editors accept all advertisements, articles and notices in

It is a work rich in dramatic contrast, withthe quiet reflective beauty of the closingchorus and the chorales, for example, setagainst the fierce anger evident in thebaying crowd scenes. Perhaps the greatestjoy of the St John Passion, however, isthat for all the ferocity and sorrow of theGood Friday story, it is a truly optimisticwork anticipating the resurrection withmusic suffused with light and hope.

Humpback whales are known well fortheir singing and their beautiful noises.

Humpbacks are the only whales that cansing. The songs travel miles through theocean to communicate and attract otherwhales. These sequences of moans, howls, cries and
