IPCC WGI: Science Overview

• Increased temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentrations– It is likely to be in the range of 2 to 4.5ºC with a best estimate of about

3ºC, and it is very unlikely to be less than 1.5ºC.

• Changes in precipitation– Increases in amount of precipitation are very likely in high-latitudes,

while decreases are likely in most subtropical regions.

• Sea level rise– Likely to rise .18 - .59m by 2100 (does not include increases ice

discharge from ice sheets that could add .1 or .2m).

Observed Rising Global Temperatures

“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal…”

“Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid 20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic GHG concentrations.”

Global average warming in the past century is 0.76°C (1.37°F).

The rate of warming over the past 50 years is nearly twice the 100-year average.

Warmest years over last century: 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006

Heat waves have become more frequent; cold days have become less frequent.

Future Changes in Climate:Risks & Implications for Adaptation

A mix of adaptation and mitigation can delay, reduce and avoid potential impacts due to climate change.

“Continued GHG emissions at or above current rates would cause further warming and induce many changes in the global climate system during the 21st century that would very likely be larger than those observed during the 20th century.” -IPCC, 2007

IPCC global temperature projectionsby 2100 relative to 1990:

- Best estimate = 1.8 to 4.0ºC (3.2 to 7.2ºF)- Likely range = 1.1 to 6.4ºC (2.0 to 11.5ºF)

Under the IPCC “business-as-usual”emission scenario, warming and sea level rise would continue for centuriesbeyond 2100.

• More confident assessment of the relationship between observed warming and observed changes – “…it is likely that anthropogenic warming has had a discernible influence on many physical and biological systems”.

• Greater confidence in ability to systematically estimate magnitude of impacts at different ranges of increases in global average temperature.

• “Impacts due to altered frequencies and intensities of extreme weather, climate, and sea levels are very likely to change.”

• “Adaptation will be necessary to address impacts resulting from the warming which is already unavoidable due to past emissions.”

• “Future vulnerability depends not only on climate change but also on development pathway.”

• The resilience of many ecosystems is likely to be exceeded this century by an unprecedented combination of climate change, associated disturbances (e.g., flooding, drought, wildfire), and other global change drivers (e.g., land use change, pollution). **

• Ecosystem structure and function, species’ ecological interactions, and species’ geographic ranges will experience major changes. **

• Biodiversity and ecosystem goods and services (e.g., water and food supply) likely will be negatively impacted. **

• The health status of millions of people, particularly those with low adaptive capacity, will be affected due to: – heat waves, floods, storms, fires and droughts– higher concentrations of ground level ozone related to climate

• Factors that directly shape the health of populations such as education, health care, public health prevention and infrastructure and economic development will be critically important. ***

• Moderate climate change in the early decades of the century is projected to increase aggregate yields of rainfed agriculture by 5-20%, but with important variability among regions.

• Major challenges are projected for crops that are near the warm end of their suitable range or depend on highly utilized water resources. **

• Warming in western mountains is projected to cause decreased snowpack, more winter flooding, and reduced summer flows, exacerbating competition for over-allocated water resources. ***
