PROLOGUE
The University of Calicut, established in 1968, the second University to be set up in
Kerala was opened as a part of the affirmative policy of the government in response to the
challenges offered by the geo-political nature of Malabar. It aimed to bring higher education
within the purview of one and all.
At presint the University has 30 Post Graduate departments and 426 affiliated
colleges and is the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala.
SCHOOL OF DISTAI\CE EDUCATION(SDE)
The School of Distance Education, one of the major departments of the University
was established in 1981. Now it is a major education provider in Kerala with an annual
enrolment of about 50,000 students.

2.1 Students seeking admission shall apply online only. Online Registration facility for
admission is provided through www.sdeuoc.ac.in/OnlineRegistration or through the
University website www.universityofcalicut.info/OnlineRegistration. The printout of
the application should be sent to - The Director, School of Distance Education,

Admission is granted only on satisfactory fulfillment of the eligibility conditions
regarding basic qualifications and the submission of relevant documents prescribed
in the prospectus. Applications which are defective or unaccompanied by the
required Original Certificates, T.C and fees shall be summarily rejected.
2.4 Spot Admission
Applicants can submit their application along with all the required documents directly
in SDE. They should remit (50/- for Spot Admission. The original certifichtes of these
candidates will be returned on the same day after verification.
2.5 Identitv CardEach student will be issued an Identity Card on admission showing the Enrolment
Number, Contact Class Centre etc This can be downloaded from the website
(www.sdeuoc.ac.in> Online ID Card) .If the original Identity Card is lost or damaged, a
duplicate will be issued on payment of (100/- towards fee for duplicate Identity Card.
Students must quote their Enrolment Number in all their corresponddnces with SDE.
The students should bring the Identity Card whenever they come to S.D.E and to attend
Contact Classes. The card should be surrendered to get Transfer Certificate(T.C) on
Completion/Discontinuation/Cancellation of the course.
2.6 Contact Classes
The students of SDE will be offered contact classes at various contact class cenffes.
The details regarding the centres are given in the table below. A student can choose
Contact Class Centre at the time of Online Registration. The allotment of contact centres
will depend on the number of students enrolled for each prograrnme. If sufficient number
of candidates are not enrolled for a prografilme, the nearest contact class centre will be
allotted. No contact class will be provided if the enrolment for a prograrnme is less than
20.The time table of contact classes will be sent to the students well in advance. The
classes will handled by teachers of the SDE, teachers of the colleges affiliated to the
Universities in Kerala and by experts in the concerned field. .

2.7 Studv Materials
The study materials prepared by the teachers and experts in the subject will be
distributed to the students through the contact class centres. The copies of the study
materials will be available in the website(www.sdeuoc.ac.in>Student 7,one> Study
Materials). The study materials will not be provided in printed form if the total
emollment for a programme is less than 50 students.
2.8 Universitv Examinations
The examinations of the School of Distance Education will be conducted by the
Controller of Examinations. Students of the School of Distance Education should submit
their applications for Examination through online as per the notification from Pareeksha
Bhavan. The printed copies of the online application for examination should be forwarded
to the Controller of Examinations with the necessary documents. The dates of
examination's will be intimated to the students through News Papers and University
website(www.universityofcalicut.info) . The students have to register for the whole
examinations at the first appearance for each semesterlyear. Students have to remit the 2"d
installment of their tuition fee after the completion of 2nd semester at the beginning of the
3d semester. The students who fail to remit their tuition fee on time will not be permitted

to apply for examinations. Students are required to remit their tuition fee and apply for
examination on time to keep their SDE registration active.
2.g Centres of Examination
The students can select their preferred examination centre from the list of
approved centres provided at the time of online registration. Centre once Selected cannot
be changed.
2.10 SubsequentAopearance
Students who fail in any paper and intend to register for reappearance should do so
directly with the Controller of Examinations.
2.ll TransferCertificate
Original Transfer Certificates, submitted by the students seeking admission, will not
be returned to them once they are admitted to the course. A fresh TC will be issued by the
SDE after completion of the course or on discontinuation.
2.12 Paritv with Reeular Students
Students of the SDE are offered the same Courses as in the regular colleges affiliated
' to the University of Calicut. They have the same syllabi, curriculum and examinations.
2.13 Admissiirn to SC/ST/OEC Students belonging to SC/ST/OEC category will be
admitted in the SDE without remitting the tuition fee at the time of admission only if they
are not employed in Govt/Quasi Govt/Public sector services.. But they have to remit all
other special fee like Admission Fee, Matriculation Fee etc. Such students haye to submit
the duly filled in application for fee concession along with copy of SSLC, +2 , Original
Caste Certificate, lncome Certificate issued by competent authorities and copy of
AADHAAR card at the time of admission. These students should submit an application
for renewal of tuition fee in the 2nd and 3'd year in order to continue to avail the fee
concession.
2.14 SDE Librarv .
The SDE has a separate Library of its own with a good collection of books,
periodicals, reference books etc. Students can make use of the library resources and the
' reference services byproducing their student's ID card.

General Rules:
IMPORTAI\T: Orders regarding amendments, modifications, additions, deletions etc.,
issued by the University from time to time, are to be timely incorporated to these Rules.o Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examinations at an annual or its
preceding supplementary examinations held by the examination authorities alone are
eligible to seek admission to any PG programme of study under the University.
Candidates are not eligible to seek admission to a PG prograrnme in a particular
acadenlic year if they have passed the qualiffing examination in the
supplementary/September examination in the same academic year to which they seek
admission.
o The interval between the date of passing the qualiffing exam and the exam for which
admission is sought should not be less than the normal period prescribed for the
prograrnme of study.
. Children of service persons who are awarded gallantry decorations in the Vira Chakra
either in person or posthumously and also on Non-Decorated service Personnel who
are killed in action will be exempted from the requirement of minimum marks
prescribed for admission to M.A/LI.Com/NI.Sc. Programmes.(GNG2128074/I984
dated 01.12.1986)
o Equivalency/Recognition of the qualiffing examinations taken from other
Universities/lnstitutions should be confirmed strictly before making admission of
students.
o The Equivalency Certificates/Recognition Certificates issued from this University are
of a general nature, without veriffing originals of the qualiffing certificate and other
records of the candidates. Therefore the Admitting Authorities have to veriS properly
and eosure the genuineness of the claims of the candidates regarding the
qualifications, mode of study, duration of the prograrnme (10+2+3 pattern) etc. before
granting admission.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
l. Students uhder mark Svstem :
Eligibility of each PG programme is specified based on the eligible UG
programmes and the % of marks obtained in different parts(eg: Part I, Part II, Part IIIetc). Relaxation in the requirement of minimum marks up to 5oh for OBC/OEC is
applicable. SC/ST candidates need get only a pass in their qualifying examination for

admission to the Post Graduate Programmes. Eligibility criteria are given along with the
description of each programme.
2. Students under Grade Svstem:
For each PG programme there will be a set of eligible UG progralnmes. Either of the
below given options(Option 1 or Option 2) will be the general criteria"for fixing the
etigibility for each prograrnme. Option 1 is based on the overall CGPA and Option 2 is
based on the CGPA in each core and complementary courses. The following system is
provided for a CGPA with 0 - 4.

1. M.Comi). Students under Marks Scheme:
B.Com/BBA/BBS/BBM Degree of this University or equivalent degree with
at least 45% marks for Part III. OBC/OEC candidates are eligible for relaxation up to
5%. SC/ST candidates need only to get a pass.
ii). Students under Grade Scheme
B.Com/BBA/BBS/BBM Degree of this University or equivalent degree with
OPTION I
2. MA Economics
i).Students under Marks Scheme:
BA Degree of this University with Economics/Foreign Tra$e/Development
Economics(Main) or equivalent degree with at least 45%o marks for Pan Ill(excluding
subsidiaries) OR BSc. Degree of this University with Statistics / Mathematics (Main)
or equivalent degree with at least 70Yo marks for Part III (excluding subsidiaries).
OBC / OEC candidates are eligible to relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need
only to get a pass.

BA Degree of this University with Economics /Foreign Trade/ Development
Economics (Main) or equivalent degree OR BSc Degree of this University with

5. Those who are eligible for mark relaxation on the basis of cast should submit original
community certificate.
6. SC/ST/OEC candidates should submit the filled in application form for fee concession
(available in the website www.sdeuoc.ac.in>Download*Application Forms) along
with community certificate, income certificate & nativity certificate.
7 . Those who do not avail the facility of spot admission should enclose a self addressed
cloth lined envelope(without stamp) of size 30 cm x 25 cm along with a chalan for

Govt. Employees, University Employees etc.
9. Those who have completed Degree from the Universities outside Kerala should
submit an equivalency certificate obtained from the University of Calicut..
