My name is Mary. I want to tell you about my experience studying

abroad in Paris for a full year. I studied French literature. I lived in a

dorm. At first, it was hard to get used to a new country. I spoke some

French, but the language barrier was still a problem. I had to deal with

loneliness. I felt homesick. I made an effort to improve my French. Life

became much easier. I made plenty of new friends and began to enjoy

my surroundings and independence. By the end of my stay in France, I

spoke excellent French. Overall, my year in Paris was one of the best of

my entire life. If you have a chance to study abroad, just do it!

Audio Transcripts:

When you have an important decision to make, it’s important not to rush

into things. You should think your options through carefully. Making a list

of reasons for and against a choice can help you decide. Give each

reason some thought and then decide which option is best. If you’re still

not sure, sleep on it. Eventually, you’re going to have to make up your

mind though. Don’t forget that many people think too much about what

they should do. Most decisions are not black and white. They will result

in both good and bad things. Sometimes, you just need to make a choice

and accept that it might not be perfect. Nobody can see the future.

Some study abroad programs can take students to very

remote countries. One program can send you to Irkutsk.

Irkutsk is located in frozen Siberia, and it is a great place to

practice Russian and learn Russian history. For something

warmer, you might want to go to the blue waters of the

Maldives. The islands are surrounded by marine life, which

makes them a popular destination for biology students. They

are also said to be among the most beautiful locations on

earth.

Hey Allie!

I’m glad to hear that you might be coming! Don’t worry too much abou

t the language barrier. Lots of people here can speak English. You can loo

k online for some information about the country. Try Wikipedia and www.

gio.gov.tw. I’m not sure how to apply for a student visa. I think you need t

o choose a university first. Then, they will make arrangements for you. Pe

ople who come here for a semester often say that Taiwan Normal Universi

ty is the best for Chinese. I can help you practice too, of course. Come so

on! We’ll have lots of fun. We can go to the Shida Night Market and visit T

aipei 101. I’ll make an effort to stop you from feeling homesick. Don’t be af

raid of anything; it’ll be a breeze.

See you soon!

Jonathan
