Read John 2:1-12

Jesus’ first miracle was not big and elaborate. It wasn’t meant to draw the attention of large crowds. And it wasn’t meant to prove His power or who He was. His first miracle was rather simple, practical, and only noticed by a few. He turned water into wine at a wedding party.

• Jesus performed this miracle for the simple reason that they had run out of wine at the wedding.• The problem was that the wedding party was running on empty. • We all have times in our lives when we’re running on empty.

Key Take Away: Our problems are God's possibilities.

THIS MIRACLE TEACHES US WHAT TO DO WHEN WE ARE RUNNING ON EMPTY:

1. ___________________________ TO JESUS

John 2:1-3 - “On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’”

Q. What was the problem and why was it such a big deal? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Q. Was it a problem of life and death? _______________________________________________________________

• The vast majority of problems that we face every day are not life and death problems, but they are real problems. • Mary did not want any embarrassment to come to her friends and especially to the bride and groom. She did exactly

the first thing any of us should do whenever we face a problem. She turned to Jesus and told Him the problem.

Q. Is it more likely for you to turn to Jesus first when you have a problem, or turn to Him as a “last resort”?__________________________________________________________________________________________________

• God already knows the problems we face, but He wants you to talk to Him about them. • He is powerful enough to keep our lives problem free, but then we would never turn to Him for anything.

2. _____________________ TO JESUS

John 2:3-4 - “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’”

• Jesus knew it wasn't yet time for Him to reveal who He was. But the problem mattered to Him, so he performed the miracle anyway.

• What matters to us matters to Jesus. We matter to Jesus!

Q. Why did Jesus do this as His first miracle? Why did Jesus change this water into wine? _________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1 Peter 5:7 - “Cast all your cares upon Him, because He cares for you.”

Q. Is there a problem, care or concern that you need to talk to Jesus about? Is it something that your group can also talk to Jesus about for you (pray for you)? ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. ____________________ JESUS

John 2:5 - “His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’”

• There is no problem in your life that Jesus cannot solve if you will do whatever He tells you.• Too many of us know what Jesus is telling us to do, we just don't do it.

John 13:17 - “If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.”

John 2:6-10 - “Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.’ So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.’”

• The water became wine after they obeyed, not before they obeyed. • We tend to think obedience follows blessing. Instead, blessing follows obedience. • When you do obey God and do what He tells you to do you can expect Him to come through.

• Jesus didn’t just provide enough wine for the rest of the wedding, He provided more than enough.• We learned this last week too with the story of Jesus feeding the crowd, when there were 12 baskets of food leftover. • When I offer what I have, God will provide more than I need.

Q. If Jesus can take ordinary well water and in a heartbeat change its molecular structure and turn it into wine so wonderful that the most experienced connoisseur would say it was the best wine ever tasted, what do you think He can do for you? What do you need to trust Jesus for today? ____________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

• This miracle would have never happened except for one thing - ‘'Jesus also was invited to the wedding'' (John 2:2)• When you invite Jesus into your life, you will know for the rest of your life that no matter what problems you face, your

problems are God's possibilities.Luke 1:37 - “For nothing will be impossible with God.”
