„Swimming pool water is alive“ because it is exposed to extremely varied con-ditions on a day-to-day basis. Every pool user, mother nature herself and theenvironment inevitably introduce organic and inorganic components into thewater. If you ignore this, the water in your pool will soon become a turbid„pont“ because untreated pool water provides ideal conditions for the growthof bacteria and algae.

Fill a bucket with tap water and leave it to stand for a few days. When younext look in the bucket you will notice that the walls feel slimy. This is theslimy coating of bacteria which has formed because the water was notdisinfected.

If you leave the bucket to stand in sunlight, you will also notice a greencoloration. This is due to algae formation.

If your tap water is also relatively hard, you will soon see that the walls of thebucket have become rough. This is so-called hardness precipitation. The limecontained in the water has become deposited on the walls in the form ofcrystals. If you were now to measure the pH of the water in the bucket andcompare it with that of the tap water, you would notice that the pH of thebucket water is higher than that of the tap water.

This small experiment shows you just how essential swimming pool careactually is:

n Bacteria will form if you do not disinfect the water.n The water will soon turn green if you do not prevent algae formation.n The pool walls will become rough if you do nothing to counteract lime

precipitation.n The pH of the pool will soon be outside acceptable limits if you fail to

adjust the pH value.

4. Physical water care

You must know how many cubic metres of water your swimming pool holds inorder to be able to apply the correct quantities of cleaning agents. The formu-la used to calculate water volume will vary depending on the shape of the pool:

Most of the larger particles of dirt will be caught in the filter in a well-circu-lated pool. We generally advise users to leave the filter pump in operation toallow the overall water volume to be circulated at least 2 - 3 times per day. This usually corresponds to a daily filter running time of 6 - 8 hours.

If you use a sand filter then you must rinse the filter every week by back-washing, thus replenishing your swimming pool water with fresh water. Theautomatic procedure triggered by the rinsing process in the case of the sandfilter also applies to other types of filter. These must also be cleaned and atleast 3% of the water replaced by fresh water every week.

Anything which nevertheless get into the water can either be removedmanually using a fishing net or aspirated by means of an automatic basesuction cleaner.

All swimming pool owners who believe that, once filled, they can now enjoytheir pool indefinitely without implementing a routine care procedure willencounter problems after just a few days. The process described in the aboveexperiment is accelerated in pool water due to warmer water.

A series of physical and chemical measures will help you to ensure that thewater in your pool stays crystal clear, perfectly hygienic and free from unplea-sant odours. Enjoyment of your pool will be enhanced by the instructions inthis brochure. The modern range of BAYROL care products therefore holdsthe key to perfect swimming pool water, and it doesn’t take much of yourvaluable time.

Water circulation and filtration (physical water care) and the addition of watercare products (chemical water care) form the basis of the routine care proce-dure. Physical and chemical water care procedures complement each otherand are of equal importance for an effective cleansing routine. The basic prin-ciple of water management is shown in the diagram.

Water circulation and filtration alone are not sufficient to keep the water clearand free from micro-organisms. Chemical water treatment is therefore essen-tial. Bacteria, fungi and viruses can only be eradicated by disinfectants whilstalgae growth can only be prevented properly by the addition of algicides.Numerous fine particles and turbid stubstances can only be removed fromthe water by flocculation.

Every swimming pool owner must therefore apply chemical treatments to thewater in order to be able to bathe in hygienic water.

Therefore, basic knowledge of swimming pool water care and of how certainwater care products work is crucial for effective and economical water care. The average water care procedure takes no more than 10 minutes a week andwill soon become routine practice.

The pH value regulation is essential for correct swimming pool water care. The pH valueof the water will indicate whether and to what extent the water is alkaline or acidic. TepH value is also an important parameter for establishing the efficacy of the disinfectantused.

The ideal pH value for optimal water care ranges from 7.0 to 7.4. The pH value can, however, vary considerably depending on water hardness and temperature, and musttherefore be checked regularly, i.e. at least once a week. This is traditionally carried outusing the BAYROL Pool-Tester. Dissolve one phenol red tablet in water in a mea-suring cuvette and compare the colour obtained against the colour chart. BAYROL’sQuickTest strips are even easier to use (page 21); pH measurement is “child’splay” using this method.

The following problems may arise if the pH value is too low (i.e. too acid) or too high(i.e. too alkaline):

5.1 pH value regulationIf the pH of the water is too high, (i.e. over 7.4), the product known as “pH-Minus” - an easy-to-use acid granulate - is added to the water. The pH gra-dually falls with pH-Minus. If the pH is too low, then “pH-Plus” is addedand the pH of the water in the swimming pool is correspondingly raised. pHvalue regulation is particularly straightforward with the practical 500g dosingsachets. A dosing schedule on the back of the sachet will tell you how manysachets you need to apply for your pool volume and according to the pHrecorded before adding the product. This dispenses with any complex calcu-lation of quantities to be applied.

Swimming pool water provides conducive living conditions for various micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, algae). Only a small proportion of bacteria andfungi are pathogenic and constitute a risk of infection for pool users, buteven harmless bacteria and fungi can produce slimy deposits and may causethe water to become turbid. An effective means of eradicating the micro-organisms must therefore be sought, i.e. disinfecting the water in order tokeep it in a hygienically sound condition.Choose from three different water disinfection care programmes:n Water disinfection with chlorinen Water disinfection with active oxygenn Water disinfection with bromine

a) Water disinfection with chlorineConventional disinfecting with chlorine not only has a bactericidal effect but also eradi-cates non-filterable organic impurities by means of oxidation (so-called cold combusti-on). Conventional water disinfection with chlorine is the most reliable option especiallywhen water contamination is particularly high, e.g. due towater temperatures constantly above 28º C or a high con-taminant content. With the development ofmore stabilised chlorine products(Chlorilong, Chloriklar, Chlorifix), chlorineis becoming easier to handle and the quantityof chlorine available is put to better use. Thereis an improvement: Chlorifix consists fromnow on of micro balls instead of granulate. Thus the small dust parts, which are includedin every granulate, were considerable reduced.Furthermore the flowability of the product hassignificantly improved. Your advantage: Ournew Chlorifix with micro balls can beapplied even more easy, convenient and safe. The high efficiency and the fast dissolvingof Chlorifix remain unchanged. You can use Chlorifix further on for all types offilters. The advantages of these solid chlorine products are as follows:a high active chlorine content, complete residue-free dissolution, minimal effect on pH.In particular, the stabiliser contained in these products (isocyanuric acid) prevents anyunnecessary chlorine loss usually triggered by the effect of the sun’s rays.

New: VariTab, the worldwide first 2-Layer Tablet for Quick andLong-term disinfection

It’s high time for a fundamentally new kind of pool water care.BAYROL’s research and development department have come up with a superior chlorine-based pool water treatment concept: VariTab.

The advantages of the 2-Layer TabletAs you know the hygiene of swimmingpool water is a very important issue. You want poolwater for your family and yourself that is not only superficially clear but hygienically clean? Then VariTab is good news for you. It defines new standards in water quality. As the name suggests, VariTab is the first tablet with a two-layer, varied dissolvingrate, giving several phases of disinfection and cleansing activity. VariTab is simply

added to the skimmer when the pump isrunning and is foreseen for pools with sandfilters. VariTabs are now available in the en-vironmentally friendly 4.5 kg carton.

Layer 1:Shock chlorination: The upper, blue tabletdissolves within about 10 minutes. Part of thechlorine contained in the blue tablet is fast dissol-ving and is immediately transferred into the poolwater through the sand filter. This results in shockchlorination: the chlorine value rises noticeably fora short time, thus eliminating turbidity and killing any bacteria present.Even the filter is cleansed and disinfectedVariTab is intelligent: the other part of the chlorine in the blue tablet is made up oflarge, slowly dissolving granules. These are deposited on the surface of the filter sandand for between about 30 and 60 minutes they intensively clean and disinfect the filter. This is especially important because the most frequent cause of bad water quality is acontaminated or soiled filter. Research has shown that virtually half the filters in use areeither contaminated or soiled. VariTab finally provides the solution to this problem byacting where the dirt and bacteria are.

Layer 2:Long-term disinfection, flocculation and hardness stabilisationThe lower white tablet dissolves slowly and is effective against bacteria, viruses and fungifor 1 to 2 weeks. So, following the shock chlorination, constant and thorough disinfec-tion is guaranteed for the whole of the time it takes to dissolve. At the same time, aflocculant is continuously added to remove even the finest particles that cause turbidity. This makes the water much clearer. The hardness stabiliser which is also included worksagainst calcium precipitations.Result: The VariTab 2-layer tablet is an effective combination of fast and slowdissolving disinfectant and guarantees double hygienic safety. Moreover the sand filteris cleaned and disinfected. VariTab doesn’t just make the pool water superficially clear;it also makes it hygienically clean.

VariTab, the new dimension in water quality.

Time is a precious commodity for most people and no less so for swimming pool ownerswho due to this constraint are more and more requesting a “complete” pool water mana-gement system. The latest innovation from BAYROL matches every aspect of this request. The premium product is known as COMPLETE. As its name suggests, this is a com-plete pool care system based on chlorine in a granular form, which comes in a practicaldouble dosing sachet. With COMPLETE, you carry out 3 care stages in just one simpleaction. The complete care system contains all the active ingredients you need to care foryour pool: disinfectant, algaecide and clarifier. Another plus for COMPLETE is thatthanks to a patented formula, it contains 40% less chlorine but still maintains its effec-tiveness. The chlorine values are thereforelower than those used in conventional chlori-ne products. A proportion of the chlorine hasbeen substituted by other highly effective, for example oxygen-based oxidising agents. The result is a premium product, which con-tains a unique combination of active sub-stances that guarantees super clear water, even with low chlorine values.

Page 5: 1. Thebasicprinciplesof swimmingpoolcare - m.b5z.netm.b5z.net/i/u/10035505/f/poolcare_brochure.pdf · 1. Thebasicprinciplesof swimmingpoolcare 5 „Swimmingpoolwaterisalive“becauseitisexposedtoextremelyvariedcon

Since the chlorine value is less than that used in conventional chlorine products, you can– unlike with all other quick-dissolve chlorine products – swim just 15 minutes afterapplication, allowing you to have more time enjoying your pool! With COMPLETE, you no longer have to fiddle with the dosing ball or even deal withthe unpleasant effects of highly concentrated products. Just cut the two chambers of thedouble sachet with scissors at the marked point and pour the entire content of bothchambers directly into the pool with the circulation pump running, preferably in front ofthe inlet nozzle. The granules dissolve quickly disinfecting the water immediately, oxi-dising impurities, guaranteeing effective algae inhibiting and visibly clarifying the water. The result is super clear water. For a 20 m3 pool, the addition of 1 double sachet of COMPLETE is sufficient to lastone week. You will receive 16 double sachets in a 4.48 kg box or 4 double sachets in asmaller 1.12 kg trial pack.

We recommend the Multibloc or Multilong system in particular for chlorine-basedwater disinfection as these patented products contain all the essential substances for athorough swimming pool water care routine in tablet form:n Disinfection with rapid-dissolving chlorine (Multilong only)n Disinfection with slowly-dissolving chlorinen Prevention of algae formation via a foam-free algiciden Greater filter efficacy and turbidity removal with a flocculant.Flocculation is especially apparent using the Multibloc or Multilong device whichincorporates an ingenious system. The filter is immediately “enhanced” by the rapidlydissolving flocculant, i.e. filter performance is improved from the outset and the filter istherefore substantially more effective. The slowly dissolving flocculant in the whitetablets – chlorine block – continuously removes dirt particles (that the filter cannnothold) from the water, thus ensuring crystal clear water for a period of 14 days. The Multibloc lasts for approximately 2 weeks with a water volume of up to 30m3. TheMultilong system lasts for around 2 weeks with a water volume of up to 50m3, i.e.twice as long as conventional disinfectants. Both systems now also contain a newhardness stabilizer that works effectively against calcium carbonate precipitations.Water temperature obviously plays a role in this respect. The higher the temperature andthe greater the degree of contamination, the greater the oxidant consumption and theshorter the dosing interval. The Multibloc or Multilong systems are both practicaland hygienic. With theMultibloc system, simply unscrew the lid and place in the skim-mer. In the case of the Multilong device, remove or push down the lower protectivecasing depending on pool size and insert the cartridge into the filter or overflow con-tainer. Both products will keep the water clean for 14 days at a stretch. It really couldn’tbe simpler! The products are also ideal for holiday care procedures. These all-rounders will keep30 m3 (Multibloc) and 50 m3 (Multilong) of water clean and clear for up to 3 weekswith reduced filter running times and less contamination. The Multibloc andMultilong systems are ideal for pools with a sand filter. These products are also sui-table for swimming pools with cartridge filters taking the shorter washing intervals ofthe filter cartridges into account.

b) Water disinfection with active oxygenConsumers’ desire for gentler non chlorine programmes, this led to thegrowth of chlorine free programmes, and active oxygen in particular.

The care programme with active oxygen offers anumber of advantages:

n No odour of chlorinen Especially friendly to the skin

(confirmed by dermatological expert reports compiled by theGelsenkirchen Institute of Hygiene and Dermatest Muenster)

n No evidence of skin or occular irritationn The water is noticeably pleasant and resembles natural water.n The skin is not dried out after bathing, nor are the hairs brittle.n The active oxygen care program is foam-free and has a neutral pH.

It does not contain any heavy metals so there is no risk of metallic stai-ning. It is also chlorine-compatible, i.e. you can switch to chlorine orshock chlorine treatment at any time.

n The active oxygen care program provides comprehensive, reliable disin-fection protection.

n Effective prevention of algae formation is also incorporated (care stage 3).

All BAYROL active oxygen systems are based on a com-bination of two active ingredients which complementeach other perfectly:

Component 1 Bayroklar Tab®, tablets for disinfectionComponent 2 Bayroplus®, liquid, activator and algae prevention

(foam-free)

This combination ensures a unique synergistic effect that is patent-protected.The strength of the individual components is enhanced many-fold in combi-nation. These components must, therefore, always be used together. In termsof overall effect, this care programme is similar to disinfecting with chlorine.

c) Water disinfection with bromineBromine disinfection provides an alternative to chlorine disinfection.Bromine, like chlorine, is a halogen, thus making it ideal for disinfectingswimming-pool water. Bromine is effective against bacteria, viruses and fungiand eradicates organic contaminants in the water by a process of oxidation.Bromine has the following advantages:

n Bromine does not have the disruptive, unpleasant odour of chlorine,n It is non-irritant to the skin and eyes,n Bromine is lime-free, has a neutral pH and can be used regardless of

water hardness.n Bromine offers optimum safety during the disinfecting process thanks to

higher pH tolerance. 87% of the disinfecting components are still effec-tive even at a significantly higher pH of 8.0 compared with just 33% in thecase of chlorine.

This care programme is particularly suitable for pools in which the odour ofchlorine has a disruptive effect but which nevertheless require a high level ofdisinfection safety, e.g. for spas. From a consumer point of view, brominecomes half-way between chlorine and active oxygen.

Not only does AQUABROME® have intensive disinfecting and oxidising pro-perties, but it is even superior to chlorine in terms of algistatic effect (in-hibiting the growth of algae). AQUABROME® is not only a pioneer in its fieldbut has also been the market leader amongst bromine tablets for the past 30years. This product is used in both private and public swimming pools.

AQUABROME® Tablets and the Brominator used for dosing form the basisof the AQUABROME® system. AQUABROME® Tablets are dissolved in thebromine-dosing chamber. The dose solution is automatically conveyed direc-tly to the pool circulating system. The slow decomposition ofAQUABROME® Tablets makes these ideal for application via the bromina-tor which only needs to be filled with AQUABROME® Tablets every fewweeks. The advantages of semi automatic dosing are also apparent with thebromine water disinfection system. AQUABROME® Brominators areexceptionally robust and of simplistic design to ensure a long and reliable, virtually maintenance-free life-span. The system is especially recommendedfor use with spas.

Manual: The choice between tablet duo, granulate duo and liquid product

DuoTab is the ideal option for those wishing to adopt a straightforwardactive oxygen care procedure. The Tablet-Duo is easy to apply and keeps30 m3 of water clear and clean for 1 week. The new clarifier removes cloudysubstances.

Soft & Easy is just as easy to use as the DuoTab and contains the two com-ponents that complement each other synergistically in a twin sachet. (1 twinsachet for 20 m3 water per week). Soft & Easy also contains additional sub-stances in this entirely new formula which includes a clarifying effect and buf-fer effect on pH. Furthermore, the twin sachet can be placed directly in thepool without the need for any dosing device.

Softswim is the ideal option for advocates of liquid products. The two com-ponents of the active oxygen water care system are combined in a liquid pro-duct. The Softswim-System comprises the afore-mentioned Softswim fordisinfecting and algae prevention, the Softswim Starter and the BayroSoftQuickTest. The Softswim Starter is applied once at the start of the season. It enhances the disinfecting process and prevents turbidity due to lime- ormetal-containing precipitates. Both the pH and Softswim content can bemeasured using the BayroSoft QuickTest. From now on the active oxygen products BayroSoft, Softswim andSoft & Easy contain hardness stabilizer. The integrated hardness stabilizeris effective against calcium precipitations.

Automatic: the intelligent combination product

Liquid BayroSoft is always applied using the PoolManager Oxygen orPool Relax Oxygen measure-regulating and dosing device to ensure optimalBayroSoft water content. Furthermore, the pH is automatically maintained at7.2. Automatic water care with active oxygen has never been easier.

Swimming pool water is filtered in order to eliminate particles and turbidity.A filter, however, can only retain particles of a certain size. Smaller particlescan only be filtered by using additional measures. Flocculation allows sand fil-ters to remove even small particles.

The flocculant is added in front of the filter and forms flakes in the water, enveloping the finest of impurities and trapping other particles on their sur-face which are then sufficiently large to be completely retained by the sandfilter. Backwashing flushes the dirt-laden flakes out of the filter.

Moreover, good flocculation enhances the performance of the disinfectantused. Water quality is generally improved and bathing in cool water can beenjoyed without any evidence of cloudiness. This applies to all care program-mes and is particularly apparent with the active oxygen care programmes.Result: The filtered water is crystal clear and impeccably clean.

Superflock was specially developed for flocculation in private swimmingpools with sand filters. This is a cartridge that slowly releases concentrated,water-soluble flocculants. The cartridges are simply placed in the skimmerafter backwashing where they continuously release flocculants into the waterin front of the sand filter over a period of several days. This is far more effec-tive than the manual addition of conventional flocculants that form flakes foronly a limited period.

Superflock also has the advantage of removing metal ions such as iron, copper and phosphate.

5.3 Prevention of algaeformation

5.3 Prevention of algaeformation

The AQUABROME® system also comprises AQUABROME® Algicide andAQUABROME® Regenerator.

AQUABROME® Algicide is a foam-free, liquid algicide. Its composition ofactive ingredients is particularly suitable for use with AQUABROME®tablets.

AQUABROME® Regenerator is a rapidly dissolving, active-oxygen baseddisinfectant granulate. It quickly eliminates organic turbid substances andcontaminants and regenerates used bromine. The pool can be used immedia-tely after dosing.

Algae are the oldest life-form on earth. Amongst the 10 000 types, there areunfortunately some which grow particularly well in swimming pools. Algae areplant micro-organisms that produce unwanted organic substances. Onceagain, these provide an ideal nutrient medium for bacteria and fungi. Algaereproduce and proliferate via spores which are carried everywhere with dustparticles present in the air. They can therefore penetrate any swimming pool, even indoor pools - sufficient reason, therefore, to prevent the growth ofalgae.

Current disinfectants alone are not always sufficient to prevent the formationof algae. Moreover, algae may be resistant to chlorine because chlorine maynot penetrate the mucous covering of larger colonies of algae.

Prevention is better than cure! Prompt prevention with BAYROL’s Desalgineproducts interrupts the metabolic processes of algae. The algae either die ortheir growth is inhibited. The continual presence of a small quantity ofDesalgine in the water, topped up on a regular basis, will keep your swim-ming pool free from algae.

Desalgine products have proven their worth over the years and are effectiveagainst all types of algae. Free from toxic heavy metals, Desalgine does notirritate the skin. It is added to the water immediately after the pool has beenfilled. This product not only prevents algae formati-on but also inhibits the growth of bacteria and remo-ves turbid substances from the water, leaving thewater clearer.

The entirely foam-free Desalgine Jet has been spe-cially designed for use in pools with jet systems(counter-flow system). Bayroplus is also foam-freeand is the equivalent product for the active oxygenprogram.

This begs the following question: which care program (chlorine, active oxy-gen or bromine) is best suited to individual swimming pool owners becauseevery pool is as individual as its owner. In other words, every pool is expo-sed to different conditions and warrants an individual care routine. The re-cycling and filtering processes vary considerably as does the degree ofpollution, etc. BAYROL therefore offers 3 swimming pool care programsdesigned to suit various swimming pool conditions.

Consult the program check list to find the ideal swimming pool careprogramme for you and your pool.

6. Automatic water care

PoolManager:A new benchmark inautomatic water treatment

Introducing the fourth genera-tion of the PoolManager, oneof the leading equipment forautomatic water treatment, nowfurther improved and availablein an attractive new design.Particular attention has beenpaid to ensuring it is even moreuser friendly. The large 5.7”

touch-screen in association with an easy operation guide sets new standards.A light touch of the finger on the screen is enough to call up the menu itemyou desire. Settings are also made in the same easy manner, and each menuitem is furnished with an informative help text. The PoolManager displayseverything in clear text and without any cryptic abbreviations. And commis-sioning for the first time has also been simplified: PoolManager requestsparticular parameters it needs for the initial set-up in a special menu point toensure nothing is forgotten and the pool water is best treated from the verystart. PoolManager shows the user exactly what to do.

The latest version of the BAYROL PoolManager incorporates the alreadyknown select system as well: You can choose between the chlorine, activeoxygen and bromine pool care programmes. As an alternative to PoolManager, the economic alternative Pool Relax isalso available in chlorine, active oxygen or bromine versions. For both systems, but especially for PoolManager Oxygen, we recommendto add an automatic flocculation module (Flockmatic) to ensure crystal clearwater.

9. Regular water analysis

21

An effective chemical water care procedure is based on the correct adjustmentof two fundamental values: pH and level of the disinfectant. An analysisshould therefore be carried out at least once a week.Regardless of whether you have opted for disinfection with chlorine or withactive oxygen, water analysis is entirely straightforward with the BAYROL teststrips and you have the result in seconds. Simply immerse the QuickTest teststrip into the pool to find out whether the pH and disinfectant concentrationin the pool are adequate. The ideal pH ranges from 7.0–7.4. The disinfection parameter depends onwhich care programme is used.

Use BayroSoft QuickTest for the active oxygen programme withBayroSoft/Softswim. The colour comparison will show you whether the pHand level of Softswim are adequate or need to be adjusted. At least 5 mg/Lshould be detectable before dosing with BayroSoft (pale blue coloration ofthe test strip).

QuickTest strips are the ideal analysis instruments for chlorine-disinfectedpools. All you have to do is briefly immerse the test strip in the water to getthe reading for (free) chlorine and the pH-value. For private swimming poolsthe chlorine reading should be between 0.3 und 0.6 mg/L.

The popular QuickTest test strips are now even more valuable. Now, as wellas measuring the pH and the free chlorine content, you can take the algaeci-de reading with an additional test pad. The measurement works with bothBAYROL algaecides: Desalgin and the foam-free Desalgin Jet. Now you canalso determine the algaecide content of private swimming pools for the veryfirst time. This is a great advantage, because now that you can measure thealgaecide content you will always be able to make sure you have the right

amount of algaecide in the water, and you can better preventthe build up of algae.

And there is yet another new development with QuickTest:measuring the amount of free chlorine has been improved byusing a completely new, complex material and a new colourscale. The result is far more accurate readings, especially inthe low chlorine range (0.5 mg/L) and much easier readabilityof the readings.

The Bayroklar Tester is available for care programmesinvolving DuoTab or Soft & Easy. The bromine/pH PoolTester is a control device used to determine the pH and bro-mine content of swimming pools and whirlpools based on the

principle of colour comparison with reagenttablets. The ideal bromine content is between

1–3 mg/L and 4 –6 mg/L for swimming poolsand whirlpools respectively.

Care programme

A score of 30–45The gentle active oxygen program is the ideal option for you. You will benefit from theadvantages of active oxygen as opposed to chlorine. Moreover, you perform a goodphysical water care procedure, carefully clean your pool, which allows you to enjoybathing in gentle, natural, chlorine-free water. Choose from the manual addition ofDuoTab, Soft & Easy or Softswim and the PoolManager Oxygen orPool Relax Oxygen automatic water care option.

A score of 20–29Your choice of care program is relatively unrestricted since your swimming pool is notexposed to an excessively high level of pollutants. Bromine would be an ideal option foryou. You can switch over to active oxygen if you look after your pool water carefully andmonitor it.

A score of 9–19Your swimming pool is exposed to a relatively high level of contaminants. The conven-tional chlorine program (Chlorilong) will best ensure that your pool water remains inan impeccable condition. You can further improve water quality using our newly deve-loped VariTab. The filter cleaner integrated in the VariTab solves the problem of dirtin the filter, a frequent cause of water problems. Bromine is a possibility if you findchlorine more difficult to tolerate and regularly monitor the condition of the water. Ifchlorine does not upset you and you want to adopt the simplest swimming pool careprogram, then the Multibloc/Multilong option is exactly right for you. The auto-matic care program with PoolManager Chlorine is ideal should you wish to choo-se the most comfortable option.

10. Additional care tips10. Additional care tips

Start of the seasonIf the pool is empty and cleaned from pollutants and lime, check the filter andallow new water to flow in. First of all adjust the pH (7.0 – 7.4), then imple-ment a basic disinfecting programme or shock chlorine treatment. Proceedwith the normal care procedure 3 days later.

Remember that, whenever a pool is refilled, the pH may change quickly in thefirst few days and must therefore be checked more frequently and the pHadjusted as required.

CleaningIt is a precondition for hygienic water care to clean the swimming pool atregular intervals, at least once a year, when empty. This applies not only toopen-air pools but also to indoor pools since lime, grease and dirt depositsshould be removed from the sides and bottom of the pool, regardless of thevisual appearance of the water, in order to remove micro-organisms (bacteriaand algae).

Full-scale cleaning (spring-cleaning)Decalcit Super should preferably be used to clean an empty pool. This liquidcleaner has been especially developed to remove lime and other depositswhilst protecting material surfaces as much as possible. It is applied with anordinary brush or scrubbing brush and rinsed with water after the cleaningprocess. With the new viscous formula, the contact period is extended andthe cleaning effect is visibly improved. Adisan is also suitable for the basiccleaning of highly sensitive liner or plastic pools.

Routine cleaning(general maintenance cleaning when the pool is filled)Routine cleaning should also be carried out regularly since greasy, sootydeposits easily accumulate due to dirt in the air and constant pool use.Adisan is particularly effective for removing these residues. Bordnet hasbeen developed to remove fatty residues from the pool edges (at water level). For optimum cleaning, use the appropriate tools (Bordnet Care-Set) at alower water level, e.g. during back-washing. Bordnet can be used on all poolsurfaces such as Dutch (glazed) tiles, for liner pools and polyester, etc.Since it is viscous, the product is also ideal for vertical surfaces (pool walls).

Caution should be exercised with cheap household cleansingproducts as these introduce foreign matter into the waterwhich may lead to turbidity, foam generation or the growthof algae, and may scratch the surface of the pool, e.g. liner

pools.

Hardness stabilisationWater hardness can be sub-divided into overall hardness and carbonatehardness and is expressed in degrees of hardness (ºdH).

Degree of water hardness

in ºdH 0-4º 4-8º 8-12º 12-18º 18-30º über 30º

Ranking Very Soft Moderat. Rather Hard VerySoft hard hard hard

Soft waterThe pH value is not very stable.

Hard waterThe higher the degree of water hardness, the greater the risk of lime precipi-tation and water turbidity.Regions with hard, lime-containing water run the risk of lime precipitation anddeposition. This causes rough pool edges, clogged filters and furred-up heatexchangers which have a considerably poorer heat transfer rate and thuswaste valuable energy (a lime coating of 1 mm reduces the heat transfer rateby 15%!). Single addition of Calcinex at the start of the season will preventnegative effects of this nature.

Auxiliary dosage devicesConcentrated disinfectants (like chlorine tablets) should not be applied topainted or synthetic surfaces due to the risk of bleaching. Dissolve in thewater using so-called dosing devices.

Follow the BAYROL rule of thumb for maintenance products: always dissolvewhite tablets in a dosage float. This rule applies to Chlorilong and toBayroklar-tablets in general. There is, however, one exception: Chloriklartablets should always be dissolved in the skimmer (with the circulation pumpin operation). It would be easier to place the tablets in the skimmer, but this is not advisa-ble, as a considerable amount of the disinfecting effect is lost during passa-ge through the filter. Optimum dosing is therefore achieved via a dosagefloat. As regards the chlorine disinfecting process, dosing can also be carriedout using the skimmer.

Avoid the formation of bleaching spots.Concentrated disinfectants have a bleaching effect. For this reason, slowly-dissolving disinfectants in tablet form should not be thrown directly into thepool, but placed in a dosage float or in the skimmer. Rapidly dissolving chlo-rine tablets (Chloriklar) are best dissolved in the skimmer (keep the pumpsrunning). This will avoid the formation of bleaching spots due to small par-ticles of chlorine which may slip through the dosing float net. There is no riskof bleaching spots with granulates (Chlorifix) that are placed directly in thepool as the substances dissolve immediately. To be on the safe side, keep therotary pump working and apply at various sites throughout the pool.

Caution: If chlorine is splattered onto clothing, it will bleachthe material on becoming damp.!

Holiday careAnyone who does not have an automatic swimming pool care device andintends to be away for more than 8 days must administer an active ingredientdeposit for disinfecting and algae prevention purposes whilst on their travels.

The swimming pool should ideally be covered over. The automated pool cir-culating device should not be switched off but left running on a daily basis(for half the usual time).

If you have a sand filter, adopt the following procedure: Back-wash with asufficient quantity of water, adjust the pH to 7.0 – 7.4 and preferably place aBAYROL Multibloc device (per 30-50 m3 water) or Multilong (per 50-80 m3

water) in the skimmer. The Multibloc/Multilong will last for approximately3 weeks. In the case of a cartridge filter: Clean the filter, check the pH (7.0–7.4) andthen place several Chlorilong tablets in the dosage float depending on thesize of your pool. By reducing the dosing aperture, you can disinfect the waterfor a good 3 weeks. Do not forget to administer twice the usual quantity ofDesalgine or Desalgine Jet or Bayroplus, to protect against algea.

Even if the water looks in good condition on your return, neverthelessthoroughly back-rinse or wash out the filter first of all.

Filter careAs a rule, the filters should be backwashed at least once a week in order toremove the dirt particles that may have accumulated in the filtration medium. In the case of hard water, lime deposits will form in sand filters despite regu-lar backwashing and, in extreme cases, will virtually totally clog the filtrationmedium, thus substantially reducing filter efficacy. We therefore recommend that you decalcify and clean the filter 3–4 times ayear with Decalcit Filter. Add 300 to 500 g of Decalcit Filter to the skim-mer prior to backwashing. Set the filter device to “backwash” and switch onthe pump briefly. Turn off the pump immediately so that Decalcit Filter canreach the filter tank. Allow to react over one night and thoroughly backwash.

In swimming pool filters there are ideal conditions for bacteria to grow anddirt to accumulate. Usually, your filter should be completely clean after thebackwash. Turbid water, higher consumption of disinfectant and strong chlo-rine smell, however, are clear indications that there is something wrong withthe filter. The solution to that is FilterShock Tab, which disinfects andcleans sand filter systems. It “oxidizes” the debris thatremains in the filter even after backwashing, thus creating theprerequisites for clean water. FilterShock Tab is a special, quickly dissolving tablet (BAYROL patent) suitable for the chlo-rine, bromine and BAYROL Active Oxygen care programmes. The new tablet make dosage even easier.

An effective disinfecting process and removal of turbidity byflocculation are essential to ensure optimum sand filter func-tion. Sand filters medium should generally be replaced every2–3 years.

BAYROL has conducted much research into the correlation between water qua-lity and filter condition and established that, in practice, almost every secondfilter is clogged with micro-organisms.

This has serious negative repercussions on theefficacy of the disinfectant used. The latter is thenvirtually wasted in eradicating micro-organismsfrom the filter and can no longer be used to ensu-re effective disinfecting of the pool water.BAYROL research has therefore developedFilterclean Silver – a patented filter granulatewhich prevents the formation of micro-organismsand bacteria right from the outset in places wheredisinfectants virtually fail to penetrate, mamely in

the centre of the filter. This ensures long-lasting, high-grade water quality andlong-term (2–3 years) disinfecting of the filter area.Next time you change your sand filter, ask your BAYROL dealer to replace 40%of the quartz sand with Filterclean Silver. Backwash the filter for 5 minutesprior to use. This ensures that the substance is thoroughly incorporated andwill guarantee a germ-free filter for 2 to 3 years.

Care during the winter monthsNearly all pool manufacturers recommend that their outdoor swimming poolsshould be left filled and only partially drained to below the skimmer inletsduring winter. The advantages: With pools sunk into the ground, the watercounteracts the pressure of any earth slippage which might force the walls ofthe pool to cave in. Water in the pool also weighs the pool down, preventingany tendency to float if surrounded by a high level of groundwater in thespring. Moreover, a filled pool is less susceptible to extraneous climatic influ-ences and cannot be damaged by any objects falling into it.Additional advantages can be obtained by adding Puripool Super, the speci-al winter care product. Lime deposits or algae growth are thus prevented fromthe outset, making spring cleaning that much simpler.

Tip: The pool water can still be used afterPuripool Super has been added.

The following points should be borne in mind as regards pool care during thewinter months:1. pH value regulation (7.0–7.4)2. Shock chlorinate with the pump running, so that any impurities present

will not be allowed to “hibernate” over winter.3. Once the pool is no longer in use, lower the water level below the skim-

mer inlet, to protect circulation equimpment from frost.4. Add the appropriate quantity of Puripool Super to the pool.5. Empty outside pipelines.6. Put an ice-buffer in the pool to compensate the ice pressure.

Fresh water supply / backwashing /changing the waterEven if the pool water is effectively treated, the accumulation of dissolved sub-stances in the water (especially salts formed by chlorine reactions such aschlorides and nitrates) cannot be completely excluded over time. High con-

!

26 27

centrations of chlorides have a corrosive effect on all metal parts, especiallyon aluminium and even on high-grade stainless steel.

Excessive salt concentration can be prevented only by substituting part of thepool water with fresh water on a regular basis. Pools with high water tempe-ratures where water evaporation leads to a higher salt concentration have tobe partly refilled with fresh water. In the case of private pools, the amount offresh water added per week should be at least 3%, or preferably 5%, of thepool content, equivalent to backwashing for approximately 5 minutes withsand filters.

Pool covers considerably decrease the amount of evaporated water, thus alsoreducing the amount of fresh water to be added.

Even in the best-kept swimming pool, a gradual accumulation of salts willoccur which cannot be removed either by filtration or by chemical means. Theonly way to deal with this problem is to change the water. Hence, the generalrule is to change the water once a year for outdoor pools and every 2 - 3 yearsfor indoor pools, even if the water appears to be clean. In the case of open-air pools, this is best carried out in the spring as the pool has to be spring-cleaned in any case after the winter months.

Filling water / Metal precipitates

Pools with cartridge filters can only be filled with tap water. If you have a sand filter, thepool can also be filled with well water if you follow the tips below.

If the filling water contains iron, manganese or copper (usually from private wells), unat-tractive water discoloration (ranging from dirty green to brown to nearly black) and extre-me clouding may result. This does not warrant pool drainage as the precipitation cangenerally be filtered out and eliminated with flocculation. Proceed as follows for the opti-mal removal of undesirable metal ions:

1. Shock chlorinate the pool water, for example with Chlorifix or Chloriklarin order to oxidize all iron and manganese.

2. Accurately adjust the pH.3. Flocculate the iron- and manganese hydroxides built up over a period of

several days with the filter system running, e.g. with Superflock.

Tip: Copper can also be removed with Superflock, but the pH must bemaintained at a level of 7.5 – 7.7.

Hard water should be treated with Calcinex, in order to avoid precipitation ofhardness-generators in the water. The use of softening systems often onlyreduces hardness by 50% and frequently warrants additional hardness stabili-sation. The formation of cloudiness and lime deposits in the pool and circu-lating system can be avoided with Calcinex. This product also binds metalsin the water and prevents water discoloration due to metal ions.

The pH, which tends to rise, should be checked and controlled particularlycarefully during the first few days. The initial metering of the water disinfec-tant must also be checked accordingly and increased if necessary due to thedifferent level of impurities in filling water.

Proof of iron in well water: Fill several litres of the well water into a cleanbucket and add half a teaspoon of Chlorifix or one Bayroklar MP tablet. If thereis any iron present, the water will quickly turn green or brown. If your pool does not havea sand filter you should not use water from a well.

Special features of whirlpoolsand small pools

Special issues have to be taken into account with whirlpools and small pools:

A whirlpool has a continuous stream of water passing through it and bubblesare formed due to the inlet of air. The water temperature is generally highterthan that of a normal swimming pool. Whirlpools are therefore more prone tothe accumulation of certain types of bacteria which proliferate very rapidly ina warm medium and increase the risk of disease.

BAYROL has therefore developed care products especially for these pools.Bromine care programmes are ideal for whirlpools. Bromine is milder thanchlorine and has the advantage of a higher pH tolerance (see page 15) whichis particularly useful given the tendency towards higher pH levels due to therelatively high water temperatures. The 0.8 kg application rate ofAQUABROME® SPA has been specially designed for whirlpools. Calcinexshould also be added in all cases of hard water.

A complete water care system in the formof the Whirlpool Set, based on thespecific conditions encountered in whirl-pools, is available for those who prefer tobathe in water gently cleaned with activeoxygen.

Whirlpool maintenancemade easy

Looking after the water in whirlpools isfundamentally the same as looking after water in a swimming pool, but thereare certain things to watch out for. Because there is obviously far less waterin a whirlpool, the dosages are also far smaller. This is why we provide thepopular Whirlpool Set (on an active oxygen basis), which now includes 1 kgof Adisan SPA system cleanser.

Adisan SPA removes any impurities left behind in the whirlpool and the cir-culation system. And it also cleans and disinfects parts difficult to access suchas jets and piping. The granulate also works where mechanical clea-ning can only be achieved with difficulty, so any biological films, and oil and soap deposits present are removed and unpleasantodours prevented. Simply add Adisan SPA every time the water ischanged after bathing, either via the filter box or pre-dissolved in abucket. The circulation pump must be running when you do this.

Also included in the Whirlpool Set are: Bayroklar SPA 1 kg,Bayroplus SPA 1 L, Calcinex SPA 0.5 L and Schaumex SPA 0.5 L.

The following points should generally be checked in the event of a problemaffecting water quality:n Is the pH correct? (BAYROL-recommended pH: 7.0–7.4).n Is the filter clean? (sand filter: backwashing, cartridge filter: washing out; silica gel

floating filter: refloat).n Is the pumping system working properly? Is the circulation pump working at least

6 hours/day? Are the pre-filter and skimmer basket free from large contaminants,e.g. foliage?

n Is the fresh water intake adequate? (BAYROL recommendation: add 3–5% freshwater per week, equivalent to back-washing for approx. 5 minutes with sand fil-ters).

Please note: all recommendations regarding Superflock andFilterShock apply only when a sand filter is used.
