Port Technology 2015:

change the way Owners and Operators will manage

ships in the future. Expects intelligence technology will

help CREW make better decision on board to improve

operational efficiency, prevent maritime incidents and

enhance safety’

Port Technology 2016:

‘AI Captains, Artificial Intelligence based navigation

software can drive ships without staff in the future’

‘ One of the Robotics Research Center sees that robot

will plough the seas already in 2020’

‘ Rather then being fully autonomous, robot ship fleet

will be monitored via land based control centers with

crew of 7 to 14 people’

SCARING??? YES AND NO.

• Mentoring and Training in Changing Context

Illusions or Reality? Closing Remarks

->All officers to be intellectually curious,

->Learning from past experience and mistakes,

->Pass all experience and knowledge to new generation

->Open your mind to all digital developments,

->Pass all experience and knowledge to new

generation,

->Company should take driving sit in Training new

Generation for Command,

->Mentoring can encourage and intensify this process,

->Mentoring does not require to be regulated (it is

natural process),

->Motivation of Mentor and Mentee,

->Company to provide guidance to both Mentor and

Mentee,

->Maintenance works (Condition Based Maintenance or

holistic approach Risk Based Maintenance),

->Mentoring by AI Captain (no mistakes policy?),

->AI Captain vs developing personalities/competences,

->Legal responsibilities,

->Real Captain shall always remain in Command and

make final decision.

14 The Nautical Institute – Cyprus Command Seminar 03rd November 2017

“CONCLUSION.”New digital revolution will change completely Shipping and whole Maritime industry in the future and this is

an on going process that can not be stopped. But all Human must be Smart enough and remain

Autonomous, not just to follow all changes w/out any reflection, rather then intensify natural process of

evolution and use it in the best possible way to support Human decision and consequently avoid mistakes,

increase safety and security for own benefit. Exactly same applies for Future Generation of Command. All

past experience, knowledge shall be cultivated as a very precious gift. New technologies shall be used to

support Master decision, Mentoring (being a natural process) and Training (being a task specific) shall be

intensified in new Context of digitalisation with great support/guidance of not only Companies, but whole

Shipping Industry, as I am doubtful that AI Captain can really help in developing competent personalities.
