1. Thanks were offered to all who worked at the State Tournament.2. A report on the Summer Speech Summit was given. Itwas emphasized that this will not

be a legislative conference, but rather an opportunity for speech educators fromthroughout Celttorrne to offer suggestions, comments, and concerns about Ute futuregoals and objectives of the California High School Speech Association. Motion Oliveras, 2nd Munsell. To Amend the ByLaws Appendix B, Section 3H so asto increase the number of awards such that: 8th -20th places shall receive 39awards, with team debate receiving 26 awards and Lincoln/Douglas receiving 13awards.

3. Allocation of the Debate "Floaters" was explained and the Worksheet distributed. Therewas discussion concerning the "fairness" of the allocation system.

C. VicePresident Curriculum Cummings.1. Textbook reviews of two text have been completed and will be printed in the Fall

Bulletin.2. Instructional videotapes have been reviewed favorably, with scripts for both Original

Oratory and Expository outlined and written by the Curriculum Committee. Ron Riehland Larry Smith are featured in Original Oratory; Jim Harville and Gay Brasher arefeatured in Expository; the 1989 State Champion in Expository ("Velcro") was chosenfor inclusion in Expository.

3. Cummings shared information re the Wisconsin commitment to oral communicationeducation, and the Wisconsin curriculum guide was disp layed .

4. The needfor public support for oral communication education (from other than speechcoaches) was str·essed. Letters from former students andlv.i.p.'s were requested.

5. Cummings mentioned a computer telecommunications system called "CSUNet".6. Cummings urged attendance at both the Summer Speech Summit and the Sacramento

Dinner.7. Cummings announced the death of Larry Hagland.

D. Treasurer Smitrl.1.The State Tournament income/expense report was presented. (cf. attached)2. The check.ing account shows a balance of ~$6,OOO; savings account ~$600·; and

on producing one tape on the following "Original" events: advocacy. expository, andoratory. Suggestionswere requested for a coach-expert to prepare a 15-20 minutepresentation plus excerpts from demonstration speeches.Suggestionswere alsorequested for professional persons who would be willing to donatetime and talent tothe production of these tapes.

6. Presentations by Schaefer and Silber.a. The presentations were excellent and should be used in future workshops. Two more

presentations will be revtewed at the Spring Meeting in SanJose.
