THE BASICS

►Oklahoma State Softball and second-year head coach Kenny Gajewski return to action this weekend for three games in the Big 12 Tournament, starting with No. 2 Baylor on Friday at 11:00 a.m. on Fox College Sports. The Cowgirls will then face Iowa State at 2:00 p.m. before Saturday’s conclusion.

FOLLOWING THE ACTION

►Cowgirl fans can catch Friday’s game against Baylor on Fox College Sports, while both games will be on 105.5 FM in Stillwater. Live stats for all the games will be on okstate.com and in-game updates will be provided on Twitter (@CowgirlSB).

OKLAHOMA STATE SNAPSHOT

►Oklahoma State comes into the weekend coming off a tough stretch in which the No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners took three games of the Bedlam series. Vanessa Shippy led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls, posting a .333 batting average on three hits with a double and RBI. Christina Biggerstaff showed she can stand with the best of them in the circle, going four innings and allowing just two hits and a .167 batting average. The Bedlam series concluded the regular season for the Cowgirls.

► For the second-consecutive year, Oklahoma State softball set a program record on its way to leading the Big 12 in All-Academic team selections, the league office announced last week. The 11 first team selections set an OSU record for first team, while the 12 overall broke the previous record of 10 set last year. Vanessa Shippy was one of just five student ath-letes from across the Big 12 to achieve the coveted 4.0 GPA. In his first two years at Oklahoma State, putting an emphasis on the classroom, Kenny Gajewski has helped lead the Cowgirls to 22 Academic All-Big 12 selections. Of the 22, 18 were named to the first team. Kristin Reasnor and Shippy were also named CoSIDA Academic All-Region players, as well.

►Cowgirl batters have found plenty of success in Big 12 games this year. Oklahoma State has five players (Vanessa Ship-py, Madi Sue Montgomery, Randee O’Donnell, Alex Edinger and Hayleigh Galvan) batting .300 or better in conference play. On the year OSU has outscored its Big 12-foes 90-60, out-hit them 129-119 and has walked 78 times while giving up just 19.

►Vanessa Shippy has once again shown why she is one of the best players in not only the Big 12, but the nation this year. Shippy is batting .410 on the year, the fourth-best average in the Big 12. The junior has produced with 66 hits, 44 RBI and 44 runs to lead the Cowgirls at the plate. In the field, she’s played an OSU-high six positions (outfield, SS, catcher & first) while maintaining a .955 fielding percentage.

►Brandi Needham couldn’t have asked for a much better final season in Stillwater. She’s posted 18 wins on the year, the second-most in the Big 12 in 32 appearances. In 148.1 innings of work, Needham has struck out 71 batters while allowing just 28 walks. The 18 wins for Needham is 11 more than last year and takes her to 37 at OSU and 54 on her career (includes Illinois).

►The Cowgirl defense has led to plenty of double plays this year, in fact, it’s led the to most double plays in the Big 12 this season at 23.

►It doesn’t matter who or how but Oklahoma State batters are getting on base this year. The Cowgirls check in with the 18th-best on-base percentage in the country through 55 games. Getting on base is extremely important to head coach Ken-ny Gajewski as he knows the pressure it puts on the opposing defense and pitcher, so he’s less concerned with how they do so. Whether it be hits (.298 batting average), walks (220, which leads the conference) or hit by pitches (39), the Cowgirls are finding their way on base which has led to 291 runs on the year, the second most in the Big 12.

►Brandi Needham, Vanessa Shippy, Madi Sue Montgomery and Rylee Bayless were named to the All-Big 12 Teams, it was announced this week. Needham and Shippy were named to the first-team while Bayless and Montgomery were select-ed to the second. The four overall selections are the most for Oklahoma State since the Cowgirls had five in 2010. The two first-team nominees is the most since 2010 when the Cowgirls had two, as well.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: BAYLOR AND IOWA STATE

►Baylor 2017: Comes into the weekend with a 41-11 record, including a 13-5 Big 12 mark. The Bears have played well away from Waco, putting up a 7-1 neutral record. Baylor has won four of its last six games, taking 2-of-3 over the Texas Longhorns last week. At the plate the Bears are led by Lindsey Cargill with a .459 batting average on 72 hits with 13 RBI. In the circle kelsee Selman has led the charge with a 1.54 ERA and a 21-7 record.

2017 Baylor/Oklahoma State Series: Baylor took the series 2-1 with a doubleheader sweep on Friday as the Cowgirls dropped their first Big 12 series of the season. The series was tightly contested throughout as the Bears only outscored OSU 16-13.

►Iowa State 2017: Comes into the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the conference, winning five of their last six games down the stretch to make it to the Big 12 Tournament.

2017 Iowa State/Oklahoma State Series: OSU took two-of-three from the Cyclones to win its fourth-straight series.

INSIDE THE SERIES: BAYLOR ►Oklahoma State finished 2017 1-2 against No. 13 Baylor after the two teams met in Waco. After the Bears took the doubleheader and series on Friday, the Cowgirls responded with the 9-4 upset win on Saturday.

►The Cowgirls come into the game with a 33-30 lead all-time in the series against the Bears. Baylor has had success of late taking four of the last six.

►OSU is 1-3 all-time against the Bears in Oklahoma City. The two teams last met there in 2011 when Baylor defeated the Cowgirls 1-0 in the WCWS.

►Vanessa Shippy led the way in the series against Baylor in 2017, batting .556 on five hits with three RBI. With her two walks, Shippy posted an impressive .583 on-base percentage. Senior Brandi Needham earned the Saturday win over the Bears.

INSIDE THE SERIES: IOWA STATE

►Oklahoma State finished 2017 against Iowa State with a 2-1 record after the Cowgirls defeated the Cyclones in a Friday doubleheader in Ames. The Cowgirls outscored the Cyclones 30-15 in the three games while holding them to a .247 batting average.

►The Cowgirls come into the game with a 65-23 lead all-time in the series against Iowa State. OSU has won five of the last six dating back to a sweep of the Cyclones in 2016 in Stillwater. OSU has outscored Iowa State 62-29 the past two seasons.

► OSU is 6-0 all-time against Iowa State in Oklahoma City. The two teams last met in the state’s capital in 2006 when the Cowgirls defeated ISU, 2-0.

►Madi Sue Montgomery found success against the Cyclones in Ames as she posted a .462 batting average on 6 hits with four RBI. Senior Brandi Needham earned both wins in the circle for the Cowgirls.

A WIN FRIDAY WOULD...

►Move OSU to 18-24 in the Big 12 Tournament, while two wins would move the Cowgirls to 19-24. OSU has won two or more games in the tournament five times. OSU would also improve to no worse than 4-3 in postseason games under Gajewski with at least one victory.

►Be OSU’s third win over a top-25 team this year if the Cowgirls were to defeat Baylor. OSU has wins over No. 22 Ole Miss and No. 13 Baylor, with both wins coming away from Stillwater.

►Snap a three-game losing streak for OSU. The Cowgirls have not lost four-straight games in 2017 and have only lost three-consecutive games twice.

►Set up the Cowgirls to play in the Big 12 Championship if the Cowgirls were to win both games. A split would likely place the Cowgirls in the second-place game on Saturday.

STREAKS & TRENDS

►Plan on getting a win against OSU? Better hope you have a lead before the sixth inning. OSU is a perfect 20-0 on the year when leading after six innings. Once you get to the fifth, things aren’t much better. The Cowgirls hold a 20-2 record once leading after five.

►Vanessa Shippy is a multi-stat player, as she leads the Cowgirls in multi-hit games (18) and has the second-most multi-RBI games (10).

►Rylee Bayless (third) is the only Cowgirl to have started all 55 games at the same position this year. On the other end Vanessa Shippy has played the most positions (six) this season.

►OSU hasn’t buckled under the pressure of extra inning games up to this point as the team is a perfect 3-0 in games that go past the seventh inning.

REGULAR SEASON REVIEW: NOTES AND KEY MOMENTS

►The Cowgirls finished the regular season with a 33-22 record, which is more than wins than the Cowgirls had all of last year (32) and record six more Big 12 wins than 2016. This marks the eighth time in program history OSU has won 30 or more games in a year.

►Oklahoma State’s first win over a ranked team came on the road at No. 22 Ole Miss on March 11.

►For the first time in program history, OSU swept Texas in a three-game series and started conference play 9-0.

BEHIND THE #TEAM2

Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski is a firm believer in every team that comes through OSU plays a big role in preserving the history of Cowgirl Softball.

With that in mind, each team will be numbered during the Gajewski era to signify they won’t be forgotten.

COWGIRLS AT THE BIG 12 TOURNAMENT

►The Big 12 Tournament returns for the first time since 2010 as the top six teams in the conference are set to meet at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Playing as the No. 4-seed, Oklahoma State lost to No. 5 Missouri, 5-0, in its lone game of the 2010 conference tournament.

►Oklahoma State has reached the championship game twice in program history, with the first coming in 1997 and the other in 2001. OSU lost 3-1 to No. 1 Missouri in 1997 and fell to No. 2 Oklahoma 6-0 in 2011. Oklahoma State reached the championship game as the No. 5-seed in both occasions.

►OSU has had 10 players named to the All-Tournament Team, with it having a program-high three selections in 2003. OSU finished 2-2 that year with wins over No. 10 Baylor and No. 5 Texas A&M and was one game away from its second championship game.

►The Cowgirls are 1-1 all-time against the Baylor Bears in the Big 12 Tournament. They’re 2-0 against Iowa State. OSU is set to face the Bears and Cyclones in the opening day of the 2017 tournament.

►Coming in as the No. 3-seed in 2017, that will be the highest seed the Cowgirls have had in the tournament since they were the No. 2-team in the 2003 tournament. OSU went 2-2 that year with wins over No. 10 Baylor and No. 6 Nebraska.

2016 POSTSEASON

►The 2016 Cowgirls returned to the postseason for the first time since 2011, and were selected as the No. 2 seed in the Athens Regional along with No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 Northwestern and No. 4 Maine. Oklahoma State showed it wasn’t just happy to be there, and rattled off three-straight wins after falling in the opener to force a winner-take-all game with the Bulldogs. OSU finished the postseason 3-2 under then first year coach Kenny Gajewski.

►After a tough opening Friday loss to Northwestern, the Cowgirls responded well on Saturday with a 10-1 win over Maine and 3-2 victor over Northwestern to advance to Championship Sunday. Randee O’Donnell executed with an RBI-squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth to secure the win over the Wildcats as senior Kacy Freeze picked up both wins on the day.

►Championship Sunday started off with a 5-3 win over host Georgia, as the Cowgirls won their third-consecutive elimina-tion game. The three-straight elimination wins tied a school record. OSU later fell 6-0 to Georgia in the second game of the day with a trip to a Super Regional on the line.

►Senior Pitcher Kacy Freeze picked up all the wins on the weekend for the Cowgirls.

►”I think the word proud has been tossed around a lot and that’s what we are,” said Vanessa Shippy following the Sunday split. “I think the way that this ended, it’s sad that it had to come to an end but the fight that we showed today is just proof that our team is heading in the right direction.”

A LOOK AT THE PROGRAM

►The Cowgirls have reached the Women’s College World Series seven times in program history, and most recently in 2011. Oklahoma State also did so in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994 and 1998.

► OSU is no stranger to having big name players come through the door as it has produced 31 All-Americans in program history. Jan Drummond was the first Cowgirl to achieve the honor in 1980 while Vanessa Shippy was the most recent in 2016. All together Oklahoma State has had 12 first-team All-Americans, nine second and 10 third.

►Oklahoma State is excited to see softball return to the Olympics, as the program had at least two players participate in four-straight Olympics from 1996 to 2008. Michele Smith (United States), Melanie Roche (Australia) and Lauren Bay (Canada) kept the streak alive for the Cowgirls as the three Olympians in OSU history. Together the trio combined for three gold medals and two bronze.

►The Cowgirls have had the Big 12 Player of the Year twice in program history, first with Lauren Bay in 2003 and Vanessa Shippy in 2016. The program has also notably produced two Big 12 Newcomers of the Year (Leanne Tyler in 1996 and Shelly Graham in 1999) and one Big 12 Freshman of the Year (Jaime Foutch in 1996).

►When you think of Oklahoma State softball, it doesn’t take long to think of Cowgirl legend Michele Smith. Smith was named a first-team All-American in both 1988 and 1989. During her four-year career she was selected to the All-Big Eight team three times, the All-Region team twice and the Big Eight all-tournament team three times. Smith now works for ESPN, calling NCAA softball games across the country.

TEAM MOTTO

►Oklahoma State softball has adopted the #HRC motto for the 2017 season, which means hard rock candy. Just like hard candy, the Cowgirls want to be hard on the inside and hard on the outside when things get tough. Sometimes you can chip them, but they don’t melt. So, when the Cowgirls take the field in 2017 they will do so as #HRC.

Boomin BaylessBy Jordan Bishop, Stillwater Newspress

STILLWATER – Take a trip to Cowgirl Stadium in the spring and one is likely to see a self-proclaimed hippie up first to bat for Oklahoma State.

The dreadlocks might not be there anymore, nor the beanie, but under-neath the helmet and the No. 7 jersey is the same old Rylee Bayless.

When the bottom of the first inning comes around, the humming of Mat-thew McConaughey permeates through the stadium, and Bayless steps up to bat. Before she does, though, she has to stretch the bat behind her back a couple of times and take a few practice swings and then she will step up to the edge of the batter’s box and bounce.

Bayless will bounce before every at-bat, sometimes between pitches, as if she is a boxer waiting for the bell to ring and the round to begin. Usu-ally it’s four times, sometimes more but never less. There’s no reasoning behind it other than to shake off her nerves and the pressure for her to make something happen.

All her peculiarities tend to pay off, though.

A junior transfer third baseman from NEO, Bayless generally leaves the plate with success, though she doesn’t always think so. She currently leads the nation in walks and has already broken the Cowgirl program record. She wants hits, though.

Whenever she walks, she gives the “hang loose” sign back to the dugout because although she doesn’t understand opposing players not pitching to her, Bayless knows it’s important to get on base, no matter how it happens.

“Honestly, it makes my job 10 times easier,” Bayless said. “Everyone loves to hit the ball, but if I can get on base with the first at-bat of the first inning, then right on.”

Whenever she hits, though, it’s a different story. Opposing coaches know this, with one quoted as telling his right fielder to move back because of her notoriety. Although Bayless is one of the shorter Cowgirls at 5-foot-3, she packs quite a wallop when she hits the ball. The occasional time she clears the fence for a home run, she makes the most of it.

Bayless passes third base on the trot home, high-fiving coach Kenny Ga-jewski and then making a “Superman” motion by faking pulling open her jersey to show the “S” emblem underneath. She finishes the celebration by pretending to dunk before she jumps onto home plate, surrounded by her teammates.

The lights, yells and pure exuberance surrounding Bayless is like no oth-er, each time a reminder of a moment that almost a decade ago seemed in jeopardy.•••Darkness.That’s all Bayless can remember seeing after collapsing during an eighth-grade track meet. Darkness and her own labored breathing consumed her until she eventually came to, her mother, Laura, standing above her.

Moments before, Bayless had been running like usual. A four-sport athlete, she wasn’t used to being at the mercy of her own body. Then she felt a click in her throat,

“I couldn’t breathe out,” Bayless said. “It scared me, because I couldn’t breathe, I would hyperventilate and then I remembered falling to the ground. I was thinking, ‘What just happened?’ And it was bad from there.”

For Bayless, athletic competition was all she had known up to that point. She excelled in track, soccer, basketball and softball, always trying to one-up her elder brother, Zack. Now, it wasn’t so easy.

“It was a really rough time, a dark time and low time for me because I thought, ‘What am I without athletics?’” Bayless said.

The blackouts never received a diagnosis, Laura said, but it’s something that occasionally haunts Bayless to this day. After the initial incident, her time on the basketball court was limited. Her school, Winnetonka High in north Kansas City, Missouri, had to watch out for her as the episodes continued.

Bayless went from playing entire basketball games to only being able to play 90 seconds.

Bayless had to sign a contract that stated she was injured and had to work toward playing time. For a person who has trouble identifying hobbies outside of sports, it did not sit well.

Blacking out became more infrequent with time – enough for Bayless to begin playing more regularly – but she still has to be monitored for it, even at OSU.

Luckily for her, she has the best support staff in the world, she said, who monitor her body language and prompt her to start breathing in a brown paper bag if she shows symptoms of hyperventilating.

For her, it’s scary that her world could turn dark at anytime, she said, but if she can continue playing softball with her parents and her fan base continuing to watch her “do her thing,” then she can fight through it.

•••

Atop the OSU dugout at most home games, you will see David, Bayless’ father, and Laura watching their daughter, but not like the casual fans.

Laura Periscopes the game for everybody back in North KC, and if it’s a doubleheader, she has an extra battery in tow.

David analyzes every facet of Bayless’ game and gives her pointers and tips, sometimes even going back to the batting cages to work on a skill Bayless felt she performed subpar in that particular game.

The routine has been the same mostly for her whole life. Laura said Bayless turned to athletics early, following in the footsteps of Zack, who competed in basketball, football, wrestling and baseball before he was forced to quit because of shoulder injuries from wrestling.

wasn’t a game, their attention was required. David, who works at Ford Motor Company, came home from what were sometimes 12-hour work-days. There was his daughter was with a ball and a glove.

“I will drag him out in that July, August heat, and we will stay out as long as I want,” Bayless said. “He will hit ground balls and start saying, ‘Ry, come on, you have had enough.’ But I will tell him I want more, so he will start throwing to me and sometimes I would hit home run balls into the woods and he would have to

run and get them for me. He’s a real trooper.”

All the extra hours paid off.

As the other sports faded, softball remained for Bayless. It was her chance to get a scholarship. She still wanted to play soccer, but realized softball drew more attention from recruiters.

After visits to Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, where Zack attend-ed, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Bayless decided on UMKC.

It wasn’t meant to be, though. Right before orientation, Bayless got an email at 2:30 a.m. saying the school couldn’t accept one of her high school math credits. With it being July, Bayless almost had nowhere to turn.

“I thought the world was ending,” Bayless said. “I had nowhere to go now, nowhere to play. I was thinking about taking an extra year off of school.”

Right when she almost gave up, one of Bayless’ travel ball coaches told her about a university in Miami, Oklahoma. She figured, ‘Why not?’ and started packing.

•••

For Bayless, Miami and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M were quite a culture shock.

There was no Q39 barbecue, instead, a McDonald’s and a Subway. Her Rolling Stones and Stevie Nicks tunes on 94.9 KCMO were filled with static. It was all brand new to her.

“I thought, ‘Gosh, what am I doing here? This town is so small, it’s like the population of five,’” Bayless said. “… But when the season started and I saw real competition, I thought this is the real deal. You had no other option to be successful there. That town is a real grind and you have no other option but to be great.”

Bayless threw herself into softball and eventually everything else began to figure itself out. She started going out and making friends. At one point, she even drove through a snowstorm in her Ford Mustang to adopt a dog in Claremore.

The Blue Heeler, who came to be named Bo after Royals great Bo Jack-

son, joined her other rescue dog, a Labrador-Boxer mix named Cali, who Bayless found in a parking lot as a junior at Winnetonka.

Although she didn’t think she could adjust to the small town Oklahoma life, Bayless ultimately found herself going to the river with friends when she wasn’t playing softball.

“I’m really free spirited and outgoing,” Bayless said. “I just liked to vibe and I’m down for anything.”

With her social life going swimmingly off the field, Bayless was doing even better on it as she set 11 school records, including home runs, hits, which also garnered her a national record, and walks.

Soon, though, her time in Miami drew short. Her two years ended quickly and she needed to find somewhere else to continue breaking records.

After only taking trips to Iowa State, Tulsa and OSU, she immediately settled on Stillwater and the Cowgirls because of the small town feel. It reminded her of Miami.

•••

Lauren Mason was looking for places to live and more importantly, people to live with her in Stillwater.

The junior transfer from Rose State College knew who to text – the care-free third baseman from NEO whom she played against in junior college.

“We signed the lease and I asked Rylee what kind of furniture she had and she said, ‘Well, I have a bed,” Mason recalls. “I said, ‘OK, well I have everything else so it’s OK.’”

Although Bayless initially had a tough time adjusting to Division I softball – though she claims a tough time is having a “slump” of batting .350 instead of her gaudy .621 average at NEO – she had Mason and fellow roommate Jamie Lowrie to help her adjust.

Despite nervousness and battling the fear of blacking out, Bayless made it through the fall season and slowly began to mesh with her teammates. Mason said soon Bayless was introducing her teammates to her love for vampires and her use of slang, such as “LeBroning” on people.

If you find yourself at Cowgirl Stadium and get there early, in the top of the first inning, you’ll see Bayless over on the third base line. Her dreads are gone, replaced by four braids on the left side of her head. Her face is covered by the smear of multicolored eye black, which she describes as “badass.”

She’s the lone Cowgirl without a visor, the one who sidearms throws to first or talks about “sacred” stuff with whoever is in the pitching circle on that particular day.

Bayless is where she loves to be, on a softball field, with the sun hopeful-ly shining and her breath evenly flowing. The one place Gajewski thinks she belongs, and the one place all of her quirks are accepted with open arms.

“It’s just what she was put on this planet to do,” Gajewski said.

Rally Hands Brings Cowgirls Brings Cowgirls In Conference Play By Matt McClain, O’Colly

If you look closely down the handshake line before the Cowgirls take the field, you’ll notice one hand is more firm than the rest.

The hand is one of the Rally Handz, a sensation taking over the Oklaho-ma State softball team’s dugout. The gimmick started March 24. It was the Cowgirls’ first game against Texas and their first game of conference play.

Senior Darcy Taylor said she was inspired when the Cowgirls were playing well against Texas. Taylor and student manager Addison Ufkes simply ripped the hands off a mannequin used to model the team’s uniforms in the OSU clubhouse.

The hands have become popular since.

“It’s got us pumped up, that’s for sure,” senior pitcher Brandi Needham said. “We love it. It all started off as a joke, and it’s just rolling. It’s great. It brings up the mood a lot in the dugout.”

Taylor and Ufkes have put an enormous amount of effort into Rally Handz. They stand out in the handshake line holding the plastic hands. The pair threw the hands in the air after a walk-off victory against Texas on March 26. The Rally Handz even have a Twitter account: @Rally-Handz.

“I think this is a way to keep things light and keep people in a good mood to make sure everything’s not too serious in the dugout,” Taylor said.

Taylor has the time to showcase Rally Handz for an unfortunate reason; the Jenks native has to sit out her senior season because of injuries. Outfielder Alex Edinger said it’s awesome to have Taylor around, despite her inability to play.

“It’s really a way for her to be out there with us,” Edinger said. “She start-ed that, and it’s very funny. It leaves a lot of people wondering what’s going on, so we really like it, and we like having her there.”

Despite the goofiness the two mannequin hands bring, OSU has won a majority of its games since Rally Handz made their debut, especially in conference play.

The Cowgirls have gone 8-1 against conference opponents and have won three consecutive Big 12 series for the first time since the 2011 season, which featured a Women’s College World Series appearance.

The next opponent the Rally Handz have across the field: Texas Tech.

OSU plays the Red Raiders in a weekend series starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cowgirl Stadium.

The Red Raiders sit in fourth place in the Big 12 with a 4-8 conference record. Texas Tech’s past two opponents have been Texas and Kansas, teams the Cowgirls swept. The Red Raiders had different luck, going 1-5 against the Longhorns and Jayhawks.

Win or lose, Rally Handz will be out, and coach Kenny Gajewski said the hands are intimidating.

“If I were the other team, I’d be scared to death,” Gajewski said. “They’re hanging up on the fence, and they’re kind of awkward looking. Rally Handz are here to stay.

“If you’re not on board, you better get on board.”

The Start Of A Beautiful FriendshipBy Oklahoma State Athletics

Junior Alex Edinger and sophomore Christina Biggerstaff are an oddly perfect best friend combination. It’s a new friendship that has quickly stood out at Cowgirl Stadium in its short time. Their friendship that continues to grow started with a humble beginning. They messaged each other over the summer when they found out they’d become teammates. Soon they started to talk more and more and a friendship was quickly formed. The new teammates never had the chance to meet over the summer but both continued to talk and get to know one another. Eventually they had the chance to meet in person at a team event in early August and it didn’t take long for the two to realize they were similar people. They were extremely similar, if not the same person. They knew right away they were going to be best friends. Nothing was different. This was big, because Biggerstaff was a little hesitant. She wasn’t sure if Edinger would change once they met in person.

“When we met, she was the exact same,” Biggerstaff said. “She didn’t change. A lot of people do that. They’re really nice when you text then in person they’re really different. But she wasn’t like that.” No, they were both the same as the other person thought they were, two similar, fun people. “I’m a smiley person and she’s a smiley person,” Edinger said. “It’s nice to know if I’m having a bad day or something she’s always there.” Bad days are hard to find with these two, though. Rarely if ever will you see together without a smile on their face, laughing away. “It’s like we talking about nothing and everything at the same time,” Big-gerstaff said. “Like we talk about nothing but it’s funny. We will literally laugh at everything. “We both have the same humor. People probably think we’re weird but we get it. We just find each other funny.” It’s gotten to the point to where they struggle to look at each other without laughing. But that’s who they are. They usually don’t have big plans for when they hangout outside of softball and that’s perfectly fine with them. They don’t need big plans. “Our friendship makes my life better,” Edinger said. “Because we can sit there and say nothing and still have fun.”

When they do actually talk with each other, what serious conversations do they have? They enjoy talking about elephants, their favorite animal. Come softball time, the friendship transforms into a little more serious one. Both push the other to be the best they can be. Three games into the fall season, the two have pushed each other on the field on their way to strong starts. With Edinger in the field and Biggerstaff in the circle, both look to each other when they’re struggling to pick each other up. “I need someone on the field to always look at so I feel she is that person for me,” Biggeerstaff said. “If something is going wrong I feel like I can look to her and know it’s ok. I’ll get this next batter.” So far, it’s working. Edinger, who has seen time at three different positions, is batting 8-for-15 with five RBIs and four runs. Biggerstaff has produced as well posting a 1-0 record in nine innings of work with 10 strikeouts. The key to the good start for both is simple. They have each other. Make a mistake? They won’t worry; they’ll just look to each other and know the other has their back. As for their friendship, neither exactly planned to be best friends it just kind of happened. “It’s weird because I don’t click with a lot of people,” Biggerstaff said. “Because they think I’m kind of weird. But I found my weirdo. She’s my weird.” Although they only have two years together on the diamond they plan to make the best of those two years, both pushing each other on and off the field. Biggerstaff will wear the Cowgirl uniform one year longer than Edinger but neither plans to let this friendship end when their softball careers do. “It’s like we were born to be best friends,” Edinger said. “She’s definitely going to be somebody who will be in my life forever.”
