We need only to look at our own Carrie Martin, a previous recipient of our chapter’s scholarship, to see the promise of a young teacher. Tau members chose wisely, and Carrie has made us proud not only by turn- ing into a fine Christian teacher nurturing her students, but by joining Tau chapter and sharing her friendship with us. Last year as I was thinking about retiring my husband, Don, and I went to

eat at a local restaurant. As we were leaving a young student of mine was

entering and rushed to hug me. While walking to the car, Don leaned

over and said, “Aren’t you going to miss that?” I admitted I would and

honestly that was the one thing that kept creeping into my mind as I an-

nounced my retirement. What about the interaction with the kids? Will I

be able to compensate for that loss?

I am now half way through my first year of retirement. I am substitute

teaching and enjoying the experience immensely. The best part though,

for me, has to be talking and listening to the different students I have met

along my journey these past few months.

In November I was teaching in a second grade classroom. I thought the

students were working well in cooperative groups on a project the class-

room teacher had left for them to finish. One little boy walked over to me

and said, “Mrs. Eisinger, I am going to growl.” I thought I had misheard

him, but he repeated the exact same words. It seems he was getting an-

gry at another student in his group, and this was a way he had used in

the past to express his anger. He was trying hard to handle the situation

differently, but that old way of growling was creeping back in. I subbed

for this same classroom a few weeks later and asked the boy privately

how it was going. He turned to me proudly and said,” Great, I have only

growled twice since the last time you were here.” I absolutely loved that

moment!

As I have mentioned in previous articles, to me the teacher-student rela-

tionship is the most important thing in the classroom. It lasts far into the

future. This month we are again sponsoring our Virginia Houseman

Scholarship for future teachers. For two lucky recipients we are helping

them a little to reach that teaching goal. Our chapter is giving them a

chance to connect to students and make a difference in their lives. Delta

Kappa Gamma is letting them pursue the student-teacher relationship.

We need only to look at our own Carrie Martin, a previous recipient of

our chapter’s scholarship, to see the promise of a young teacher. Tau

members chose wisely, and Carrie has made us proud not only by turn-

ing into a fine Christian teacher nurturing her students, but by joining

Tau chapter and sharing her friendship with us. (please go to page 2)

(continued from page 1) Whenever we come together in April to meet our scholarship

recipients it is joyful to see the excitement on their faces as they embark on their dream.

Hopefully, they can also see the excitement on our faces. I think they do. I think anyone

can look at our chapter members’ faces and see reflected there the love we all still have

for the profession that brought so many students in and out of our lives.

We arrived at 11:00at Les Bourgeois Bluff-Top Bistro as guests of Alpha

Lambda for the Mid-Missouri Council Holiday Gathering2011.

Julie and Karen sold tees for our Recruitment Grants and then flashed the DKG ladies with their prod-

uct! Debbie socialized with one of the Alpha Lambda hostess; Sharon and Betty posed for the photogra-

pher; Joan and Arlene talked against the backdrop of the Missouri River bluffs.

Joan, Ashley, Linda arrived happy. Dorothy, Debbie, and Gloria talked at the door. Nancy, Gin-

ger, and Michele arrived from California!

Ginger, Carol, Michele, and Nancy found their places for brunch while Dorothy and

Debbie listened. Debbie found her place with Gloria and Julie as the candles warmed

the room. We had brunch and talked some more.

Our Alpha Lambda hostess Nancy Anderson introduced the Church Street Boys from Central Methodist Uni-

versity. The Boys performed a musical Christmas feast with some surprises. We sang our Delta Kappa

Gamma song; they reciprocated with their fraternity song. One singer bent down on his knee and sang to Gra-

cie. We were all thrilled. Alpha Lambda served the DKG cake which was both chocolate and white. Many Tau

members won gorgeous poinsettias to take home. Before leaving, we posed for our annual Christmas card.

Balance on hand 1/15/2012 $2,305.78

Note: We lost 3 members since last year, all from California: Beth Dampf, Amy

Ramsdell, and Courtney Siewert.

Also, 2 of our Reserve members failed to pay their dues (Lelay Zey and Ethel Pawley). So our chapter has absorbed that expense.

Respectfully submitted,

Dear Tau Chapter Members, I hope all had a blessed holiday season, and that you had some time to rest… The February meeting in Jefferson City is shaping up to be quite a busy one! Betty Mudd and Arlene Broeker have arranged a tour and presentation at the new Public School Retirement System building. After the program, the chapter will travel to Betty’s home for lunch and our business meeting. The February meeting is when we traditionally vote on a new slate of officers for the upcoming biennium, and we also vote on prospective new members. Recruitment Grant recipients are

chosen through a newly streamlined process. Also, Lady of Distinction nomina-

tions are due to the Executive Board prior to the February meeting. Please be keeping track of your volunteer hours, monetary donations, etc. for the THAT project. Forms were sent out earlier this fall by Judy, and I will need to send a report to the state by April 1. You may turn in your information to me via e-mail or by hard copy at the February meeting. So far, I only have only one form turned in. As a reminder, if you have changes in personal information that need to be up-dated in our handbook, please let me know, and I will make sure the membership is informed of any and all additions and changes. I look forward to seeing all of you at the February 11th meeting!

Winter weather has arrived in mid-Missouri

and we can surely expect more cold tempera-

tures! The youngsters in our communities are

in need of cold weather gear for the remain-

der of this winter. Please bring items such as

hats, gloves, scarves, and socks to the Febru-

area in the entry way at Betty’s home. Please be generous in your support
