27th January 2011

Objective: to generate and describe sequences (Level E)

Skills: Collaboration, Planning, Questioning and Making Links

By the end of the lesson:All: will be able to generate sequences.

Most: will be able to describe sequences.

Some: will be able to find the nth term of a sequence (Level D).

What sequences do you know?

StarterSpot the PatternLook for the pattern with the sequence of number and write the next 2

numbers in the pattern.

5, 8, 11, 14, 17.................. 2, 10, 18, 26, 34, 42............... 19, 13, 7, 1, -5................. 34, 25, 16, 7.................

In maths, we call a list of numbers in order a sequence.

Each number in a sequence is called a term.

If terms are next to each other they are referred to as consecutive terms.

When we write out sequences, consecutive terms are usually separated by commas.

Each term in this sequence is three times the term before it.

What is the next term?

Cube Numbers

What are the first 5 terms of the cube numbers?

Leap Frogs

• I need 3 girls and 3 boys.• The class needs to make them swap places using HOPS or SLIDES!• I need one person to keep a tally of the hops and slides.• You need to do this is as little moves as possible.

Leap Frogs

• You need to use MULTILINK CUBES and a white board to look for patterns with the frogs.

• In pairs, one person move the frogs and the other person count the number of hops and slides.

• What would be a good starting point?

What did you find?

• What is the relationship between the number of frogs and the number of hops?

• What is the relationship between the numbers of frogs and the number of slides?

Any Other Sequences?

• Can you think of any other sequence of numbers that is in a pattern?
