PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: Father, as you heard Hannah’s prayer so long ago, hear our prayers today as we bring our requests to you. Thank you that you love us and want us to come to you asking for what we need. We pray for those around the world who have been affected by fires, floods, storms and wars. May they feel your presence in their distress and need and experience love as you send helpers to them. In our own country, this great Southland of the Holy Spirit, may we become more and more aware of your love for us and our fellow inhabitants of this great land. We think of the farmers who are still waiting for rain. When the rain comes, Lord, let it be soft soaking rain to water the earth and raise the water table. We pray for our leaders that they will rule wisely with justice and fairness. As they meet to discuss poli-cies may they respect one another’s opinions and ideas so that they will be good examples to the peo-ple they are leading. Thank you, Father, for our church family and this haven that you have given us to worship you. Thank you for our Church leaders and their love of you. We are grateful that they love you and encourage us to love you and reach out to the community. We pray for Baptism Families today that you will bless them and give them wisdom as they raise their children to love you and walk in your ways. For those who long to have children and have not been blessed with such, Father, grant their desire for children as you granted Hannah’s desire. For those in need, Father, we remember them at this time and ask that you would meet the very deepest needs of their hearts and also their physical, mental and emotional needs as well.
Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, who taught us to pray……Our Father in
heaven…………

ELECTION OF PARISH COUNCIL
On 2 December at 8.15am we are going to have a Parish Meeting at which time we will elect people for the various posi-tions on Parish Council for 2019. This will enable parish council to function effectively from January in the New Year. We need to elect Wardens [preferably 3] and Parish Councillors. Nomination forms are on the table at the back of the church. Please think carefully about who would be appropriate for these ministries and fill forms out - DO NOT LEAVE IT TILL THE LAST MI-NUTE!

PRAYER AND READINGS
A READING FROM 1 SAMUEL, CHAPTER 1, VERSES 1-28 AND CHAPTER 2, VERSES.18-21 There was a certain man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. Now this man used to go up year by year from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year after year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?’ After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: ‘O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’ As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was
THEME: THE STORY OF HANNAH SENTENCE: The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed.
1 Samuel 2.10 OUR PARISH PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help us to grow in love, faith and obedience as we discover meaning and direction for
today and hope for tomorrow through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY: O God, welcoming refuge for the outcast, and upholder of justice for the oppressed: maintain the hope of the poor, so that the time may soon come when no one need want for food and shelter, and all will learn to share freely following the example of your Son, who gave his very self; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

drunk. So Eli said to her, ‘How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’ But Hannah answered, ‘No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.’ Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.’ And she said, ‘Let your servant find favour in your sight.’ Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of the Lord.’ The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a nazirite for all time.’ Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only—may the Lord establish his word.’ So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, ‘Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.’
She left him there for the Lord
Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod. His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, ‘May the Lord repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the Lord’; and then they would return to their home. And the Lord took note of Hannah; she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord. SONG OF HANNAH
(APBA Page 429)
My heart exults in the Lord: my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies: because I rejoice in your salvation. There is no Holy One like you, O Lord: nor any Rock like you, our God. For you are a God of knowledge: and by you our actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken: but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full now search for bread: but those who were hungry are well fed. The barren woman has borne sevenfold: but she who has many children is forlorn. Both the poor and the rich are of your making: you bring low and you also exalt. You raise up the poor from the dust: and lift the needy from the ash heap. You make them sit with the rulers; and inherit a place of honour. For the pillars of the earth are yours: and on them you have set the world.
