• If there is one area of scripture that is misinterpreted the most, it is eschatology.

• Revelation simply means, the unveiling, or full disclosure.

• This semester, we are going to lift back the veil and peer into the prophesies to see what God says about the last days…

7

Page 8: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

One of the biggest proofs of the Bible is fulfilled prophecy.

“Surly the Lord God does nothing without first revealingit through His servants the Prophets” Amos 3:7 NASB

Page 9: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

4 Schools of Interpretation• Preterist– Revelation relates to the time it was

written– Describes struggle between Church and

Rome– Strength=Revelation relevant to the early

church– Limitation=no significant message

beyond 1st century• Historicist

– A continuous chronicle of church history– Symbols represent different events in

history– Strength=strong emphasis on sovereignty

of God– Limitation=leaves room for multiple

interpretations

Page 10: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

4 Schools of Interpretation(continued)

• Futurist– Bulk of Revelation deals with the future action of

God in history– It’s focus is on events leading to Christ’s return,

kingdom, final judgment, eternal state– Strength=emphasis on God’s progressive activity– Limitation?=It’s written for the end time church

• Idealist/Spiritual– Revelation paints picture of struggle between

good/evil– God is strengthening the church with hope of

victory– Strength=appropriate use of symbols in

Revelation– Limitation=skeptical attitude toward predictive

prophecy

Page 11: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• The Church, since John wrote the book of Revelation, has tried to understand the events that would take place in the last days.

• Over the generations, tradition has formulated three major views. A- Millennialism, Pre-millennialism, and post-millennialism.

Page 12: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Millennial Perspectiveson Revelation

• Premillenial– Christ will return before the millennium

• Pre-tribulation/Pre-millennial– Christ will rapture the church before 7 year tribulation– After the tribulation, Christ physically returns and begins 1,000 year reign

• Before reign begins, Satan is defeated at Armageddon• Christ established his earthly kingdom/rules for 1,000 years• Christ and His people then enter eternity

– Mid-Tribulation/Pre-millennial• Christ raptures the church at mid-point of tribulation

-Pre-Wrath

Church ruptured prior to the wrath– Post-Tribulation/Pre-millennial

• Christ will meet the church in the air after the tribulation• Millennium begins with Christ’s & church’s descent

Page 13: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Millennial Perspectives on Revelation (continued)

• Post-Millennial– The return of Christ will occur at the

conclusion of the millennium– Return occurs at the close of a lengthy period of

human progress• Amillennial

– 1,000 year is a symbol of Christ’s present spiritual kingship at the right hand of God

– Millennium is this present period• Gospel can spread freely• Church can influence history by bringing people to

faith

Page 14: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Our Stance

• We will let the text speak for itself.

• This is an interactive class – I encourage questions, comments, and interaction.

Page 15: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• Within each school of thought, there are various timelines and interpretations – yet I believe there is only one interpretation that is Biblical and that will take place.

• When we think of prophecy, what books do we think of? What words do we think of?

• For the Bible scholar, there are 17 prophetic books in the Bible.

• Most of what we know is tainted with tradition, and a lot of what we think we know is simply not part of the Biblical Truth given to us.

Page 16: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• Eschatology – the study of end times or the ‘last days’.

•

• Rev. – the apocalypse - the ‘unveiling’, yet the church has come to think it is veiled.

•

• Rev. 1:3 – Why do you think the enemy is trying his best to veil the eyes of believers from prophecy?

Page 17: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• Sir Isaac Newton was a Christian, and he was a prophet. He foretold this class!

• “About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the prophesies, and insist on their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition.”

•  • The goal of this class is to pull back the veil, and

give us a glimpse of events yet to occur.

Page 18: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

IntroductionWhat is Prophecy?

Thayers Greek lexicon defines it like this:

“A discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; or by foretelling future events.”

There are two types of Prophecy – predictive and didactic.

Page 19: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Why Study Prophecy?

We study prophecy to increase our faith – our foundation on Jesus Christ:

Ephesians 2:19-20 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, (20) having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone”We are about to embark on a great journey – into the past and into the future.

Page 20: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Interpretive Rules

1. Always take the literal, natural, and common meaning of the passage unless there is overwhelming evidence that you can not interpret the word or concept in that manner.2. If a word or concept is defined in scripture and carries an inferred meaning, you must use this meaning first, and change the meaning only if there are overwhelming proofs in scripture to do so.3. Find out who the author is talking to and which of the three major prophetic groups the prophecy applies:

a. Israelb. The Churchc. Gentiles/the World

4. Any symbolism we are meant to understand will be clarified in other scripture.

Page 21: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

The Bible is reliable!

• And the Bible gives us a history of the future!

We knew it was coming…2Pe 3:3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will

come with their mocking, following after their own lusts.• 2Ti 3:1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will

come. • Mat 10:22 "You will be hated by all because of My name, but it

is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. • Mat 5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you,

and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. • Mat 5:12 "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in

the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. • Jam 5:8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the

Lord is near. • Jam 5:9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you

yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door.

• Jam 5:10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

• Jam 5:11 We count those blessed who endured.

Page 24: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

We need to be people of prayer!

•1Pe 4:7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

Page 25: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

25

You can find the Truth!

• The Bible is the ‘Word of God’.• (1Jo 2:14) I have written to you, fathers, because

you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

•  • (Rev 1:2) who testified to the word of God and to the

testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.•  • (Rev 1:9) I, John, your brother and fellow partaker

in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Page 26: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

26

• (Heb 13:7) Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.

• (Heb 4:12) For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Page 27: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

27

• (Rev 6:9) When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;

• Mat 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"

Page 28: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

28

• Every Word is essential!

Page 29: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Major Causes of Misinterpretation of Scripture

• A failure to understand the significance of prophetic gaps in the midst of a passage

• A failure to understand the meaning and purpose for parables

• The desire to hold on to doctrines you’ve been taught or have read in a book rather than letting THE BOOK reveal it’s own truth and doctrine.

• A cheap grace attitude toward scripture and doctrine – “it’s O.K. that they disagree on this point – it has nothing to do with salvation.”

Page 30: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• 1Ti 1:18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight,

• 1Ti 1:19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.

• 1Ti 1:20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.

Page 31: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

What was their blasphemy?

• 2Ti 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

• 2Ti 2:16 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,

• 2Ti 2:17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

• 2Ti 2:18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.

Page 32: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

32

You can know the Truth…• 2Pe 3:14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things,

be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,

• 2Pe 3:15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,

• 2Pe 3:16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

• 2Pe 3:17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness,

• 2Pe 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Page 33: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

33

Truth: Jesus Christ – The Word of God

Then Jesus said to those Jewish people who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to.

Romans 6:17

Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Page 34: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

34

The Science and the Sacridity of Interpretation

We must remember that:

“Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the

Lord is, there is freedom.”1 Corinthians 3:15-17

Page 35: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

35

• That removal of the veil is also called illumination – the Holy Spirit bringing the Scripture to light.

• Scripture is more important than our interpretation of it or Church tradition:

Jesus asked, “Why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your

tradition?”Matthew 15:3

Page 36: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

36

• 2Pe 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation

• This is saying there is only one interpretation of Scripture and it is what God intended when He had the scribe write it.

Page 37: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

37

I Corinthians 2:12-14

• NIV: (12) We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. (13) This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. (14) The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Page 38: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

38

I love this…

• Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

Page 39: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Some ‘Pop’ Eschatology

• We will spend eternity in heaven.

• The ‘Tribulation’ is a 7 year period of wrath on earth.

• The ‘Time of Jacobs Trouble’ is the 7 year ‘Tribulation’.

• The antichrist will arise from a 10 nation confederacy

• The parable of the 10 bridesmaids (they wait for the groom in the brides house)

Page 40: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

‘Pop’ Theology (cont.)

• There are many sections of scripture in the New Testament that are not written to the Church.

• The Church will NOT fulfill the great commission.

• After the Rapture, a great multitude of people from every nation will get saved

• And on we could go…

Page 41: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

41

You can live a little over 40 days without food, 4 days without water, 4 minutes without oxygen – but without

faith you will surely die…Spiritually speaking

You can’t believe in God or the preservation of His Word without faith! So what is ‘faith’?

All it takes All it takes is Faith!is Faith!

Page 42: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

42

Do we REALLY need faith?

The world in which we live often presents itself as cold and heartless – which in turn leads to a world of

discouraged, depressed, and despairing people. So YES we need

faith! Yet true faith is in short supply!

So, some make faith equal with hope…they simply are not the same!

Page 43: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

43

Luke 24:13-21 - "Now that same day two of them were going to a village called

Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each

other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed

these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with

them; but they were kept from recognizing him.

Some ‘hoped’ that Jesus Some ‘hoped’ that Jesus was the Messiah…was the Messiah…

Page 44: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

44

Luke 24:13-21 - "He asked them, "What are you discussing together

as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him,

"Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the

things that have happened there in these days?"

Page 45: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

45

Luke 24:13-21 – "What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth,"

they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and

they crucified him;

Page 46: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

46

Luke 24:13-21 – but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took

place."

They ‘hoped’ but they did not have ‘faith’!

Hope is not Faith!Hope is not Faith!

Page 47: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

47

So what is faith?

• Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

• Webster Greek def: “The sense of the verb, from which that of rope and binding is derived, is to strain, to draw, and thus to bind or make fast. A rope or cable is that which makes fast.”

• The Hebrew and the Greek suggest a trust or belief in a known truth, validated by evidence that would lead to a conviction.

• It is not a ‘blind leap’!

Page 48: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

48

• Heb 11:1 Now faith (the solid rope that holds something together – the belief in a known truth) is the assurance(concrete foundation) of things hoped for, the conviction(evidence, proof) of things not seen.

• Faith in Jesus Christ is valid and reasonable! We derive our evidence from the Bible and personal experience!

• If the Bible is not true, we have no basis for faith!

Belief + Proof=FaithBelief + Proof=Faith

Page 49: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

49

Many Pastor’s have preached that you should be a Christian by blind faith. Even if the Bible is not reliable and even if Jesus didn’t raise from the dead.

The Apostle Paul doesn’t agree…

Page 50: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

50

Everything rests Everything rests on the validity of on the validity of the Bible and the the Bible and the Resurrection! Resurrection!

1 Corinthians 15:13-20a - "IFIF there is no resurrectionno resurrection of the dead, THENTHEN not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”

Page 51: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

51

1 Corinthians 15:13-20a – “More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.”

Page 52: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

52

1 Corinthians 15:13-20a – “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.”

Page 53: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

53

1 Corinthians 15:13-20a1 Corinthians 15:13-20a – “But Christ has – “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead” indeed been raised from the dead”

Heb 4:12 For the word of God isHeb 4:12 For the word of God is living and activeliving and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and

intentions of the heart.intentions of the heart.

Isa 40:8 The grass withers, the Isa 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our flower fades, But the word of our God God stands foreverstands forever..

Page 54: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

54

The Bible’s version of Christianity is not about a

religionreligion – but a relationshiprelationship!

John 1:12 "Yet to all who receivedreceived him, to those who

believedbelieved in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."

Page 55: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

55

Knowing Jesus is everything!

• On judgment day, it won’t matter how ‘good’ you were.

• The only thing that will matter is did you make Jesus Lord and Savior of your life!

• If you’ve done that – you know Him, and He knows you!

Page 56: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

56

Jesus said…

• Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Page 57: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

57

How do you know Christ?

• By studying His Word!• By praying• By good Christian fellowship• By loving Him

His Word is absolute Truth. If it is not reliable, we have nothing to base our faith on. Truth must originate outside of the mind of finite man! It must come from God!

Page 58: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

58

We must stand for truth..

• Even if we stand alone

• Even when it is not politically correct

• Even when denominations refuse to do so

• The Bible is our sole source for faith and practice!

Page 59: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

59

Jesus said…

• “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by Me.”

• John 14:6

• How many ways can we interpret this?

Jesus Christ is the only way to God – period.

• This is our interpretation – is it valid:

Page 60: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO REVELATION

THE AUTHOR• Four times in Revelation the writer calls himself John

(1:1, 4, 9; 22:8)• Ways John refers to himself

– Servant of Jesus Christ (1:1)

– Brother of the Christians in Asia Minor and a fellow sufferer in the tribulation (1:9)

– Exiled to the isle of Patmos (1:9)

– Saw and heard the things record in this book (22:8)

Page 61: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57
Page 62: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Introduction to theBook of Revelation

• Date of Writing– Between 95-100 AD– During the persecution of Domitian

• Author– John, “a prophet and servant of Jesus Christ”– Most agree this is the Apostle John. Evidence:

• Writer assumes audience will know he is an Apostle

• Identification of Jesus as “the word”

Page 63: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Introduction to Revelation(continued)

• Place of Writing– From the Island of Patmos

• Rugged island in the Aegean Sea 20 miles from Ephesus

• Rome use it as a place of exile for offenders/criminals

• Destination of the Letter– Written to the seven churches in Asian Province

• Each city mentioned a center of communication• Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis,

Philadelphia, Laodicea

Page 64: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Purpose of Revelation

• To fill in the pieces of the prophetic puzzle presented throughout the ages in scripture.

• Goal is to:– Strengthen the church– Promote endurance in the face of trials– Encourage suffering believers

• It is a clarification of all end time prophecy• Desires to Instill Moral Earnestness• Urges Readers to Obey the Words of the

Prophecy

Page 65: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place

• Why did the Father have to reveal it to the Son?

65

Page 66: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

This is when God lifts back the veil of prophecy and shows us a

timeline of events!

• Mat 24:36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

• The day and hour here is a reference to the Rapture of the Church. In fact, the rapture is called ‘The Revelation of Jesus Christ’ in other passages!

66

Page 67: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• 1Co 1:7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

• 1Co 1:8 who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

67

Page 68: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

• 1Pe 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

• 1Ti 6:14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

• 1Ti 6:15 which He will bring about at the proper time--He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

69

Page 70: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

Genre of Revelation

• 3 Different Types of Literature– Apocalyptic

• Usually appeared in times of crisis

• Claim by the author to be passing on mysteries

• Mysterious, rapturous visions

• Use of symbols, parables, and allegories

• Concludes with the entrance of God’s kingdom

– Prophecy—written to change moral actions and here to reveal Christ as King

– Epistle/Letter• Circulated to 7 churches in Asia Minor

• Opening address and closing salutation

• This book is written for the Church

Page 71: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

4 Schools of Interpretation• Preterist– Revelation relates to the time it was written– Describes struggle between Church and Rome– Strength=Revelation relevant to the early church– Limitation=no significant message beyond 1st

century

• Historicist– A continuous chronicle of church history– Symbols represent different events in history– Strength=strong emphasis on sovereignty of God– Limitation=leaves room for multiple interpretations

Page 72: 1 Revelation Class One – Introduction – Slide 57

– It’s focus is on events leading to Christ’s return, kingdom, final judgment, eternal state

– Strength=emphasis on God’s progressive activity

– Limitation=None

• Idealist/Spiritual– Revelation paints picture of struggle between good/evil

– God is strengthening the church with hope of victory

– Strength=some appropriate uses of symbols in Revelation

– Limitation=skeptical attitude toward predictive prophecy
