• We will study the Book of Revelation in depth. We will explore the Biblical manuscript as we go through the entire book and develop a timeline for events yet to occur. The student will come out of this class with an understanding of the Revelation of our Lord and how it shapes our eschatology.

• If there is one area of scripture that is misinterpreted the most, it is eschatology.
• Revelation simply means, the unveiling, or full disclosure.
• This semester, we are going to lift back the veil and peer into the prophesies to see what God says about the last days…

• The Church, since John wrote the book of Revelation, has tried to understand the events that would take place in the last days.
• Over the generations, tradition has formulated three major views. A- Millennialism, Pre-millennialism, and post-millennialism.
Millennial Perspectiveson Revelation
• Premillenial– Christ will return before the millennium
• Pre-tribulation/Pre-millennial– Christ will rapture the church before 7 year tribulation– After the tribulation, Christ physically returns and begins 1,000 year reign
• Before reign begins, Satan is defeated at Armageddon• Christ established his earthly kingdom/rules for 1,000 years• Christ and His people then enter eternity
– Mid-Tribulation/Pre-millennial• Christ raptures the church at mid-point of tribulation
-Pre-Wrath
Church ruptured prior to the wrath– Post-Tribulation/Pre-millennial
• Christ will meet the church in the air after the tribulation• Millennium begins with Christ’s & church’s descent

Our Stance
• We will let the text speak for itself.
• This is an interactive class – I encourage questions, comments, and interaction.
• Within each school of thought, there are various timelines and interpretations – yet I believe there is only one interpretation that is Biblical and that will take place.
• When we think of prophecy, what books do we think of? What words do we think of?
• For the Bible scholar, there are 17 prophetic books in the Bible.
• Most of what we know is tainted with tradition, and a lot of what we think we know is simply not part of the Biblical Truth given to us.
• Eschatology – the study of end times or the ‘last days’.
•
• Rev. – the apocalypse - the ‘unveiling’, yet the church has come to think it is veiled.
•
• Rev. 1:3 – Why do you think the enemy is trying his best to veil the eyes of believers from prophecy?
• Sir Isaac Newton was a Christian, and he was a prophet. He foretold this class!
• “About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the prophesies, and insist on their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition.”
• • The goal of this class is to pull back the veil, and
give us a glimpse of events yet to occur.
IntroductionWhat is Prophecy?
Thayers Greek lexicon defines it like this:
“A discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; or by foretelling future events.”
There are two types of Prophecy – predictive and didactic.
Why Study Prophecy?
We study prophecy to increase our faith – our foundation on Jesus Christ:
Ephesians 2:19-20 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, (20) having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone”We are about to embark on a great journey – into the past and into the future.
Interpretive Rules
1. Always take the literal, natural, and common meaning of the passage unless there is overwhelming evidence that you can not interpret the word or concept in that manner.2. If a word or concept is defined in scripture and carries an inferred meaning, you must use this meaning first, and change the meaning only if there are overwhelming proofs in scripture to do so.3. Find out who the author is talking to and which of the three major prophetic groups the prophecy applies:
a. Israelb. The Churchc. Gentiles/the World
4. Any symbolism we are meant to understand will be clarified in other scripture.
The Bible is reliable!

You can find the Truth!
• The Bible is the ‘Word of God’.• (1Jo 2:14) I have written to you, fathers, because
you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
• • (Rev 1:2) who testified to the word of God and to the
testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.• • (Rev 1:9) I, John, your brother and fellow partaker
in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

• (Heb 13:7) Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.
• (Heb 4:12) For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

• (Rev 6:9) When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;

• Every Word is essential!
Major Causes of Misinterpretation of Scripture
• A failure to understand the significance of prophetic gaps in the midst of a passage
• A failure to understand the meaning and purpose for parables
• The desire to hold on to doctrines you’ve been taught or have read in a book rather than letting THE BOOK reveal it’s own truth and doctrine.
• A cheap grace attitude toward scripture and doctrine – “it’s O.K. that they disagree on this point – it has nothing to do with salvation.”
• 1Ti 1:18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight,
• 1Ti 1:19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
• 1Ti 1:20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.
What was their blasphemy?
• 2Ti 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
• 2Ti 2:16 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,
• 2Ti 2:17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
• 2Ti 2:18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.

You can know the Truth…• 2Pe 3:14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things,
be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,
• 2Pe 3:15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,
• 2Pe 3:16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Truth: Jesus Christ – The Word of God
Then Jesus said to those Jewish people who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to.
Romans 6:17
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

The Science and the Sacridity of Interpretation
We must remember that:
“Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the
Lord is, there is freedom.”1 Corinthians 3:15-17

• That removal of the veil is also called illumination – the Holy Spirit bringing the Scripture to light.
• Scripture is more important than our interpretation of it or Church tradition:
Jesus asked, “Why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your
tradition?”Matthew 15:3

• 2Pe 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation
• This is saying there is only one interpretation of Scripture and it is what God intended when He had the scribe write it.

I Corinthians 2:12-14
• NIV: (12) We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. (13) This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. (14) The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Some ‘Pop’ Eschatology
• We will spend eternity in heaven.
• The ‘Tribulation’ is a 7 year period of wrath on earth.
• The ‘Time of Jacobs Trouble’ is the 7 year ‘Tribulation’.
• The antichrist will arise from a 10 nation confederacy
• The parable of the 10 bridesmaids (they wait for the groom in the brides house)

• There are many sections of scripture in the New Testament that are not written to the Church.
• The Church will NOT fulfill the great commission.
• After the Rapture, a great multitude of people from every nation will get saved
• And on we could go…

You can live a little over 40 days without food, 4 days without water, 4 minutes without oxygen – but without
faith you will surely die…Spiritually speaking
You can’t believe in God or the preservation of His Word without faith! So what is ‘faith’?

Do we REALLY need faith?
The world in which we live often presents itself as cold and heartless – which in turn leads to a world of
discouraged, depressed, and despairing people. So YES we need
faith! Yet true faith is in short supply!
So, some make faith equal with hope…they simply are not the same!

Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each
other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed
these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with
them; but they were kept from recognizing him.

So what is faith?
• Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
• Webster Greek def: “The sense of the verb, from which that of rope and binding is derived, is to strain, to draw, and thus to bind or make fast. A rope or cable is that which makes fast.”
• The Hebrew and the Greek suggest a trust or belief in a known truth, validated by evidence that would lead to a conviction.
• It is not a ‘blind leap’!

How do you know Christ?

His Word is absolute Truth. If it is not reliable, we have nothing to base our faith on. Truth must originate outside of the mind of finite man! It must come from God!

Purpose of Revelation
• To fill in the pieces of the prophetic puzzle presented throughout the ages in scripture.

• It is a clarification of all end time prophecy• Desires to Instill Moral Earnestness• Urges Readers to Obey the Words of the
Prophecy
• Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place
• Why did the Father have to reveal it to the Son?

This is when God lifts back the veil of prophecy and shows us a
timeline of events!
• Mat 24:36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”
• The day and hour here is a reference to the Rapture of the Church. In fact, the rapture is called ‘The Revelation of Jesus Christ’ in other passages!
