It was a visceral, modern re-imagining of Shakespearean tragedy where power plays of legacy andbrotherhoodwentbeyondsuperficialtropestoask‘whatisthecostofloyaltyifitforcesyoutoturnagainstyourownblood?’I’vealwaysbeenfascinatedbytheworldof1%bikers.It’sadangerous,mysteriousbrotherhoodwhosetribalhierarchyandvaluesharkbacktoamoreprimaltime.Iwantedtobeboldwiththeimaginingofthisdangerousworld but balance it by grounding the aesthetic and performance in truth by utilising an uncompromising,cinematicdocumentaryapproach.Thecrewcreateda360degreesetwhichgaveouractorsthefreedomtoblockwithinthesceneandtoallowtheirinstinctivechoicestoinformtheaesthetic.Thisgroundedalltheblockinginrealityratherthanbeingtooprescribedorcontrived.Weallowedthecameratorespondtothedramalikeitwasanothercharacterinthescene.Thisperformance-firstapproachwascrucialingivinganenergyandvitalitytothescenesontheday.Iimmersedmyselfinfilmphotographyandmusicwhenbringingtheworldof1%tolife.Iwasconstantlylookingforanyartisticresonancethatelevateddangerintosomethingfarmorebeautifulandprofound.Formethiswasessential inbringingasenseofheartandpoetrytothisbrutalworld,becauseintheend1%isastoryaboutfamily,brotherhoodandbelonging.Thatwastheheartbeat.1%waslikeacagedanimalthatIprovoked,letlooseintotheworldandthenhadtotamebacktosubmission.Thecastandcrewwereamazingincomingonboardwithmetosculptthisstoryandbringthefilmtolife. Icouldn’t be more proud of everyone’s efforts from the ground up. It was a real collaboration of passion,commitmentanddetermination.
