On 25 May 2017 we will all observe an important day on our calendar – Africa Day. This day is observed in order to com- memorate the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 25 May 1963 which is now known as the African Union (AU). The then OAU pledged to support the work conducted by free- dom fighters, and remove military access to colonial nations. A charter was set out which sought to improve the living stand- ards across member states. Our liberation and decolonisation as Africans, and South Africans in particular, came as a result of the impact and support that the OAU made. On this important commemoration let us all remind ourselves that Africa is a youthful continent full of resources and talents that can make the lives of its people better. Let us also heed the call made by the founding fathers of this powerful organisation at its launch in 1963 that we need to, “mark each year the onward progress of the libera- tion movement, and to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free them- selves from foreign domination and exploitation.” Happy Africa Month!
