The South African Human Rights Commission is the national institution established to entrench constitutional democracy.

The aims of the Commission are to promote

- the protection of human rights

The final draft of the 5th ESR report was completed by 31 March 2004 for adoption by the Commission, printing and distribution in 2004/05.Substantial refinements were made to the economic and social rights monitoring process to improve the quality of monitoring and to raise awareness of economic and social rights. 2 economic and social rights seminars were held, in addition to 20 other presentations and briefings for government and civil society.

Key Objectives 2004/05To be an effective institution for the promotion and protection of human rights the Commission will pursue the following primary objectives:

To advance the public and parliamentary accountability of the Commission’s work and maximise the utilisation of public resources through sound strategic management and efficient financial and administrative systems and procedures;

To entrench the Commission as the major resource and primary focal point for human rights promotion, protection and monitoring in the country;

To publicise and convey the role and work of the Commission to the general public via an integrated internal and external communications strategy;
