Presentation 8:

LOCATING A BUILDING ON A LOT

2

Plot Plan

• Plot plan information typically includes:– Lot boundary lines.– Building position relative to boundary lines.

• Building setback dimensions

– Elevations of building and reference points.– Existing and future site conditions.

3

Setback

• Setback is the distance a building is positioned from the boundary lines.

Procedure For Stake Layout

• Establish front building line (BL).

• Locate stakes #1 and #2 along front BL.

• Calculate diagonal using Pythagorean Theorem.

• Locate stake #3 using two tape measures.

• Locate stake #4 using two tape measures.

• Recheck the layout.

8

Front Building Line (BL)

N

Measure front setback distance twice and set temporary stakes with a string.

Stake # 1

N

Locate stake #1 by measuring from the side property line.

Stake # 2

N

Locate stake #2 by measuring along BL the length of the building.

Calculations

• Diagonal calculation from the Pythagorean Theorem. Building is 36′ × 60′

• C2 = A2 + B2

• C2 = 362 + 602

• C2 = 1296 + 3600

• C2 = 4896

• C = 69.97142274′

12

Calculations

• C = 69.97142274′ = 69 + 0.97142274′

• 0.97142274 × 12 = 11.65707286″

• 11.65707286″ = 11 + 0.65707286″

• 0.65707286″ × 16 = 10.51316572 sixteenths

• C =

Stake # 3

N

Locate stake #3 by simultaneously measuring the width and the diagonal.

Stake # 4

N

Locate stake #4 by simultaneously measuring the width and the length.

Final Stage

N

Recheck calculation and all measurements.

Conclusion

N

Laying out building stakes is straightforward.
