MontrealMontreal

This square, now the area’s focal point, is filled in summer with visitors, vendors, horse-drawn

carriages and musicians.

The plaza was laid out after 1803, the year a chateau on the site burned down and city elders

decided to set up a public market.

Add climate control and Metro stations throughout, and you’ve got a self-contained world, shielded from the frigidity (or sweltering heat) above. Stories abound of mole like Montreal residents going for weeks or even months without seeing the light of day.

「 Poutine 」「 Poutine 」

You won’t miss signs for Poutine, French fries covered in cheddar curds and brown gravy and served with chicken or sausage. A favorite dessert is pudding chômeur (literally, ‘pudding for the unemployed’), a kind of sponge cake doused in a gooey, brown sugar sauce.
