A Farewell and Fall Ministry Opportunities

This summer we said good bye to Chris Redmond. Chr is is moving to NC. Chr is served Emmanuel for many years as our pianist, organist, chancel choir director,

To Chris Redmond Upon Her Retirement by Pam McClain

Our paths have crossed throughout the years, From school to school we taught. From students small to students tall, We’ve truly taught a lot.

The years have come, the years have gone, I can’t believe it’s true. That, once again, our paths would cross; And I’d retire with you.

God’s perfect plan has brought us close, Through friends at EBC. The music has been glo-ri-ous, To that we all agree.

A servant’s heart you do possess, And willingly you share, The beauty of the instrument, Whose notes you play with care.

Lovely prayers, a funny wit, A wink, a laugh, and smiles, Are parts of you I’ll always miss, Across the many miles.

It takes a lot of courage, to put things in God’s own hands, To give ourselves completely, Our lives, our hopes, our plans.

So follow where He leads you and make His will your own; And always take my love with you. You’ll never be alone.

I praise God for servants like Chris Redmond who have blessed our church so faithfully, for so long.

Let’s keep Chris in our thoughts and prayers as she makes her transition down to NC.

Family Life News from Pastor Jonathan

Camp season has come to a close but it has definitely been a summer to remember! EBC sent 10 children and 12 students to Camp Cowen this year, several of whom got to experience camp for the very first time. Several students felt led to rededicate their lives to the Lord and more than one has expressed an interest in pursuing a possible call into ministry! ALL of our children and students who participated got the opportunity to unplug from their daily routines and distractions and be in an environment where they were encouraged to listen for the Holy Spirit to speak to them. It’s awesome what we are able to hear God say when we stop listening to our technology, the media, and the rest of our busy schedules for even just a few days!

We also had 7 students participate in our Mission Week at the church, and 8 students get away for one last summer

“hurrah” with our Summer Retreat in Chattanooga, TN. Additionally we had over 40 kids and over 20 volunteers participate in this years’ Babylon-themed Vacation Bible School! As always, continue to pray for our children, students and families to grow in their love and dedication for our Lord, Jesus Christ in every area of their lives!

A Thank You to our Peru Mission Team

“How do we put in one email our humongous thanks for the wonderful work your team did! We are literally over-whelmed by their outpouring of effort. So much was accomplished in such a short time and all of it is such a tremendous blessing… to us personally and to our school family. We are super excited to not dread the rainy season anymore as our new roof is beautiful and functional. We are also beyond excited to have evicted our roof tenants as well… a large family of bats that liked to remind us they were in our roof with their loud noises. In addition to the new roof, screens were replaced to keep mosquitoes out of our classrooms, our library was beautifully

decorated complete with a gorgeous wall mural, and dozens of wonderful new books were delivered to us for our students. We are immensely blessed by this team of wonderful people… and in extension… the church family who sent them out. Thank you so much for coming into our lives and encouraging us with these much needed repairs and updates. In addition to that, thank you for sacrificing by coming to an unfamiliar place and working so hard in such a harsh climate. And for those of you who sent them out… thank you for your giving, your gifts of love and prayers. We were truly uplifted to be loved-on in such an amazing way. May you feel the love and appreciation we send to you in return and we pray God continues to bless you and walk with you in a mighty way.”

With all our love and thanks, Mike, Marcy, Ella and Liam

Music News from Pam McClain Goodbye summer! Hello new chancel choir season!! It’s, once again, time to rehearse and head back to the loft. Our summer was packed with special music each Sunday. Thank you to the following who provided inspiring music each week: Isidro Amigo, Karen Cox, Claire Dent, EBC Celebration Ringers, EBC Men’s Ensemble, EBC Praise Team, EBC Women’s Ensemble, Blaine Hess, Tim Lindstrom, Merideth and Pam McClain, Will Nuzum, Dwane Porter, Chris Redmond, Paul Ross, Duane Westfall, the Barnes/Martin Families, VBS Children and Jennifer Vierling.

Of course it was wonderful to celebrate our accompanist, Chris Redmond, on her recent retirement as a Wood County Elementary Music Teacher, but bittersweet to say “until we meet again” as she leaves the church accompanist position to be with her family in North Carolina. Chris is a woman of faith who has inspired so many through her talent and Godly character. To say that we will miss her is an understatement. Of course, any time she wishes to play, we will see that the bench is available. Love and blessings to Chris from your church family!

Our CHANCEL CHOIR kick off rehearsal will be held on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15th at 6:00 p.m. Our first Sunday in the loft will be August 26th!! We are always interested in inviting new members to join us. If you, or any congregational member or guest that you know of, are considering joining us, please let me know. I would be happy to speak with you/them. ( Pam McClain - 304 483-1620 ) Consider this your invitation to ….

Mission & Ministry News from Margaret Frees

Jordan Lallemont had a blessed trip in June to Mexico with Keith and Debbie Myers, and then with Lisa Simmons. She will be sharing her experience from this trip at a later date. Jordan has said “God never ceases to amaze me and I look forward to what he has in store for the rest of my life.” The team that traveled to Peru to work with Mike and Marcy Brown have shared some pictures of the work they are doing at the school. They, too, will be sharing their experience with the congregation at a later date.

It was encouraging to hear from Alvin Philipps and John Nicholson that Habitat for Humanity is making such an impact in the MOV and that Emmanuel is a vital part of it. For the month of August, we will be collecting school supplies for McKinley Elementary and VanDevender Middle School. Specific items needed for each school are on lists in the narthex. If you have questions, contact Courtney Johnson about McKinley and Mona Busiek for Vandy.

Rick and Anita Gutierrez, serving in South Africa, will be our guests on August 12. They will be bringing the morning messages and updating us on their work with Health Builders. A luncheon will follow. Our Fall Craft Fair and Bazaar will be held Saturday, October 6. This is the major fund- raiser to support the food ministry here at EBC. We need your participation in many ways. If you are a crafter, or know one, please be part of the vendor offerings. If you aren’t craftsy but can bake, we need cakes, breads, pies, brownies, cookies, and fudge (cupcakes do not sell as well for some reason). Are you comfortable and proficient at handling money? We need cashiers and sellers to man the EBC table. Tables and chairs need to be set up beforehand and taken down afterward so helping hands are appreciated. If you don’t think any of these categories fits you, then just come and shop. You won’t be disappointed. Last, but not least, if craft fairs aren’t your thing, join us on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a wonderful meal prepared by Chef Jewel.

Are you interested in getting more deeply involved in Operation Christmas Child? Sarah Modesitt Stephens will be taking over as the Drop-off Location Coordinator for our area. If you would like to work with Sarah as the Emmanuel project coordinator, get in touch with me and I will help you get started. Also, if you are interested in going to Charlotte to help process shoeboxes that have been collected, contact Brian Brown.

In March, a team went to Roane County to assist a family displaced by the 2016 floods. If there is interest, we would like to go to another WV location to help another family. This would be a two-three day trip, probably in October, to wherever we would be needed the most. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested so arrangements can be made.

GriefShare Support Group Starts August 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Grief Share will begin Wednesday, August 15 from 10:00 a.m.-Noon. Grief is defined as conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change to a familiar pattern of behavior. Generally grief is connected to loss but there are many life events that can lead to grief: death of a loved one, loss of a job, change of residence, retirement, just to name a few.

Grief Share is a 13 week Bible based support group sponsored by Emmanuel Baptist Church and designed for those who are experiencing grief. During our time together we will discuss topics like “what is normal”, “what's next”, challenges to grief, anger, guilt and being “stuck”. Gail Samolitis will be leading Grief Share. If you are interested in talking with Gail and/or attending Grief Share on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m., please call (304)-588-7632 or (304)-485-5171.
