3

Presentation Objectives

• Board acceptance of the proposed model and value proposition

• Board acceptance of the business plan structure, (pending the approval of the 2004 budget??)

• To ensure maximum support for Chapters and inclusion of all individual members, we request a specific resolution from the Board supporting that the individual member election of Trustees be through Chapters.

4

Setting the Stage for Success

• An attractive, credible, and sustainable value proposition

• Proposal includes a senior membership manager– ISOC has never had a (senior) membership manager

• We now have project management staff– Better able to support outreach

• Building the infrastructure to support Chapters– Replacing the database system– Developing templates and other resources for

chapters– Greater empowerment for chapters and individuals

Page 5: 1 Membership Proposal Chapters & Individual Members November 9, 2003 James Galvin Mirjam Kuehne Lynn St. Amour Nelson Sanchez Anne Shroeder Terry Weigler

5

Why members?

• Greater legitimacy with more representative number of Internet users

• Greater knowledge through more (and more representative) member polls

• Greater ability to reach out locally, globally• Greater ability to support and sustain local and topical

initiatives• Greater number and more vital chapters• More partnership possibilities with other organizations• Expanded channel for educational and public policy

initiatives

Page 6: 1 Membership Proposal Chapters & Individual Members November 9, 2003 James Galvin Mirjam Kuehne Lynn St. Amour Nelson Sanchez Anne Shroeder Terry Weigler

6

Why paid members?

• It’s the natural next step in a membership program• We have a value proposition to offer and people are

willing to pay for it– People want to do more, to help, to be involved, to be

educated. This requires a funding stream.

• Increased stature and increased credibility for ISOC• Enhanced credibility of members and implied higher

quality• It’s not about voting

– At best, voting is one of many possible benefits

Page 7: 1 Membership Proposal Chapters & Individual Members November 9, 2003 James Galvin Mirjam Kuehne Lynn St. Amour Nelson Sanchez Anne Shroeder Terry Weigler

7

Why Chapters?

• Significant source of value and community for members• Increases ISOC’s ability to reach out locally, globally• Increases ISOC’s ability to support and sustain local,

topical initiatives as well as global initiatives• Expanded channel for ISOC’s educational and public

policy initiatives• Expands ISOC’s knowledge through interactions with

Chapters• ISOC’s international reach is key asset

Survey Results - Services

• Survey shows that we are proposing a good set of benefits and services (over 800 responded)

• Everything except quarterly hardcopy is important to over 40% of respondents– virtual library (79), monthly electronic (65), survey summary

(61), virtual chapters (60)

• Overall, the following are the priority:– member ID card– publications– members only area– web conferences– virtual chapters

Page 10: 1 Membership Proposal Chapters & Individual Members November 9, 2003 James Galvin Mirjam Kuehne Lynn St. Amour Nelson Sanchez Anne Shroeder Terry Weigler

10

Survey Results - Services (cont. 1)

• Member ID Card (53) tops the list of benefits people believe should be part of a paid membership program, followed by:– member only area (42), quarterly hardcopy (42), virtual

library (38), member directory (37), web conferences (32) survey analysis (27)

• Member ID Card (39) tops the list of benefits people are willing to pay for, followed by:– quarterly hardcopy (24), virtual library (23), members only

area (18), web conferences (16), member directory (16), virtual chapters (11), survey analysis (10)

– These numbers are "low" as absolute numbers but we do not expect all members to be paying members

Membership Cost Comparison

• ACM– $99 per year– $198 per year with ACM Portal

• IEEE– $117-147 per year (region dependent)

• Various discounts are available in both• Our proposed services and benefits are

competitive, as long as we follow through and focus on consistent, high quality delivery. This is key to member retention.
