(SUMMARY REPORT) “Workshop on Advanced Multi-Rotor Quadcopters”

Event Date: 28th August, 2017

Venue: Seminar Hall B-Block

Time: 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

Conducted By: Kunal Singh, Assistant Professor (M.E. Dept.)

Page 125: 1. - Maharaja Agrasen University€¦ · B in Maharaja Agrasen University. The Session chair was Dr Sant Ram Chauhan, NIT Hamirpur and Co-Chair was Dr.Ranjan Chauhan, SU Solan. The

BACKGROUND: In the past few years some recent advancements in technology of

quadcopters, such as high-profile flight controllers which are able to perform at

much higher processing speed than their predecessor controllers have created an

environment where it has become possible to program our quadcopters without the

use of any programming language, but with a simple GUI software interface. The

idea of using a GUI interface is so revolutionary that today, almost 99% of the flight

controller chips can be configured easily by any person for their projects. In-fact due

to this revolution a person with little or no knowledge in electronics, programming

and mechanics can build, configure and customize their quadcopters through these

software tools. These software tools give power to a person to configure their

quadcopters to the most advanced levels. This workshop was a sound attempt to

explain our students, the relevance of these advanced software tools and most

importantly these advanced flight controllers. Recently some flight controllers have

been developed that can be connected via simple USB cable to our PC or laptop and

can be configured then by these software tools. A prototype of quadcopter

developed using this type of flight controller have been developed before this

workshop and have been tested for its reliability and stability. After that some

advanced features like GPS and OSD (On Screen display) were added to this

prototype to make it an “Advanced Multi-Rotor”. This workshop is a serious and

practical analysis of this prototype quadcopter.

INSTRUCTOR AND AUDIENCE: The seminar was conducted and presented by Mr. Kunal

Singh (Assistant Professor, M.E. Dept.). The audience include 2nd, 3rd and 4th year mechanical

engineering students and interested faculty members. It also includes some interested and

curious students form electronics and electrical engineering.

Page 126: 1. - Maharaja Agrasen University€¦ · B in Maharaja Agrasen University. The Session chair was Dr Sant Ram Chauhan, NIT Hamirpur and Co-Chair was Dr.Ranjan Chauhan, SU Solan. The

AIM: To develop enthusiasm among students and develop their multitasking skills. To

acknowledge them with the beauty and power of the advancements in aviation technology,

and to make them comfortable with these advancements by explaining in detail the

configuration tools (GUI software’s) required to configure their flight controllers simply

without any use of programming language. Another aim of this workshop is to explain step

by step the construction of a quadcopter, the relevance of materials and parts availability

and overall cost required to build an advance multi -rotor.

TOPICS COVERED: The workshop can be broadly divided into 3 parts:

CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING OF ADVANCED MULTI-ROTOR QUADCOPTER: In this part

of the workshop a detailed construction of quadcopter was discussed. In the introductory

part students were motivated via some famous quotes of Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla etc.

Students were motivated to develop their multitasking abilities. After this, the construction

part of the quadcopter begins in which the relevance of carbon fiber frame for the base of

quadcopter was discussed in detail. Some data from datasheets of BLDC motors was

analyzed in detail to study the effect of rpm and propeller size on the thrust of motor. Using

this data appropriate solutions in choosing the right propeller size for our quadcopter were

estimated. The 3s type of battery (LiPo Battery) used in the quadcopter was discussed in

detail. The internal construction and C rating of a LiPo battery was discussed which helped

the students in analyzing the size of the battery required for their quadcopter. The function

of ESC’s (Electronic speed controller) was discussed and students were guided some

appropriate ways to analyze the amperage rating of ESC’s for their quadcopter. The Function

of flight controller was discussed in detail. Students were explained the difference between

basic and deluxe version of these advanced flight controller.

Page 127: 1. - Maharaja Agrasen University€¦ · B in Maharaja Agrasen University. The Session chair was Dr Sant Ram Chauhan, NIT Hamirpur and Co-Chair was Dr.Ranjan Chauhan, SU Solan. The

The function of barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer etc. sensors were

discussed in detail. The relevance of these sensors in stabilizing the structure of quadcopters

was also discussed. Wiring diagram between controller, power distribution board, motors,

esc’s and battery was discussed in every detail. Animations of these wirings help the

students in visualizing the connections between controller and other components. Students

were introduced with the usage and advantages of having a FPV (First Person View) system

in their quadcopters. Simple wiring diagram of FPV system which consists of a camera, video

transmitter and FPV goggles was discussed detail. An introduction to augmented reality

features created by the OSD (On screen display) chip when integrated with FPV system was

discussed in detail. The integration of OSD chip on our current FPV system was discussed in

detail with the help of a wiring diagram. The functionality of the overlay created by the OSD

chip on our FPV goggles was discussed in detail through some interesting combination of

video and animation. In the later part of the workshop a complete virtual animated

quadcopter was created including all the wirings necessary to give a glimpse of how the

actual prototype looks like after completion. The connection between radio transmitter and

receiver was discussed in detail. The wiring between radio receiver and flight controller was

discussed in detail. Also, the operation of the radio remote control was discussed in detail

using some interesting animations. Lastly, a sound introduction to INAV configurator (An

open source software) used for configuration of flight controller was given to students to

make them comfortable with the configurator.

Page 128: 1. - Maharaja Agrasen University€¦ · B in Maharaja Agrasen University. The Session chair was Dr Sant Ram Chauhan, NIT Hamirpur and Co-Chair was Dr.Ranjan Chauhan, SU Solan. The

QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION: Motivated students cleared their doubts by asking
