Solomon died, and his son Rehoboam took the throne.

Jeroboam and some Israelites from the ten

northern tribes came to him.

Lighten our taxes and our conscripted labor, and we

will serve you.

Y’all ain’t seen nothing yet.

1 Kings 12:16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

Judah was the tribe of David.

Rehoboam was David’s grandson and a member of that tribe.

The ten northern tribes no longer felt kinship with them.

4

Do you feel your kinship with the family of God?

1 Corinthians 12 26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Ephesians 3 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in Heaven and earth is named.

5

All saved people are sons and daughters of God.

1 Thessalonians 4 9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

Romans 12 10 Be kindly affectioned (cherishing one’s kindred) one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

Page 6: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

6

We are truly spiritual brothers

and sisters.I am so glad I’m a part of the family of God.

Let us never be like the ten northern tribes of Israel, who had lost the feeling

of kinship with the Tribe of Judah.

17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

(TLB) 18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram (who was in charge of the draft) to conscript men from the other tribes, a great mob stoned him to death. But King Rehoboam escaped by chariot and fled to Jerusalem.

Human Logic against the Power of God.

Adoram was in charge of forced labor.

It seemed logical to Rehoboam that sending this man, who had always been feared, would

squash the rebellion.

His coming to take men caused a greater rebellion.

God had split the kingdom of Israel as judgment for Solomon’s sin.

No man could change that!

20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

God had said it would be like that.God’s Will shall stand.

10

21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand (180,000) chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

The son is like his daddy, ready to fight to keep the entire kingdom under his rule.

Page 11: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

11

22 But the Word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, 24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from Me. They hearkened therefore to the Word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the Word of the LORD.

12

God split the kingdom because of Solomon’s sin.

This time they listened to the Word of God and

turned back from fighting against Him.

Sometimes, when we fight against circumstances or situations, we may be fighting against God.

He may be correcting us or teaching us.

Slow down and learn!

13

25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

Page 14: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

14

26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

What had God told Jeroboam ?

He didn’t trust God’s Word.

Page 15: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

15

1 Kings 11:38 (KJV) And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in My Ways, and do that is right in My Sight, to keep My Statutes and My Commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.

Jeroboam did not trust the Word of God.

He would do it himself, his way.

Page 16: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

16

28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

With that he

assured his own failure.

Page 17: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

17

We must do everything God’s Way.

Page 18: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

18

31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

Page 19: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

19

33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

If only he had trusted The Lord God, brought the people back to true worship, and allowed

them to go to Jerusalem to worship,

He would have been the first of a great dynasty.

Page 20: 1 kings 12b don't figger it out

20

But he would not trust The Lord.

He devised plans contrary to God’s Will.

Will you live obediently to God’s Word?
